Rheumatoid Arthritis patients are more likely to have Gum Disease

(Best Syndication News) - A study found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis were four times more likely to have gum disease than those who were otherwise considered healthy. The study results were published in the online edition of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

The researchers came to this conclusion by comparing the gum health of 91 adults diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 93 healthy adults that were matched for age and sex. All of the participants were non-smokers. The researchers report that smoking is a recognized risk factor for developing rheumatoid arthritis. None of the study participants were treated with arthritis medications.

Gum Disease not the cause of Heart Disease or Stroke

(Best Syndication News) - The American Heart Association assembled a committee of cardiologists, dentists, and infectious disease specialists to investigate if gum disease causes heart disease or stroke. The committee concluded that gum disease does not cause atherosclerotic heart disease or stroke. Additionally, the treatment of gum disease has not been proven to prevent heart disease or stroke. The new statement by the committee was published in Circulation, which is an American Heart Association journal.

Researchers find Blood Clots can be caused by Dental Plaque Bacteria

(Best Syndication News) - Previous research has shown an association with oral health and heart health. A recent study now suggests that oral bacteria could enter into the bloodstream posing a risk for blood clots that could lead to endocarditis and blood vessel blockage.

The research came from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) along with the University of Bristol. Dr. Helen Petersen will be presenting the findings at the Society for General Microbiology’s Spring Conference in Dublin this coming week.

Safety Precaution for SpinBrush Battery Powered Toothbrush issued by FDA

(Best Syndication News) - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are cautioning consumers about dangers using some battery powered toothbrushes. The government agency said that some users of Arm & Hammer Spinbrush and Crest Spinbrush had parts fly off and chip their teeth, hit the eyes, and even have the parts get lodged in their throat.

The Spinbrush products were named this before 2009. The FDA said that consumers need to know that all electric toothbrushes have certain safety precautions when using them.

On the positive side, electric powered toothbrushes do an effective job at cleaning the teeth. However, parents should check children's battery powered toothbrushes to make sure that they are not going to come apart when used.

Health Quiz on 'The Dr. Oz Show' points out Symptoms and Signs of more Serious Medical Conditions

Working with a panel of medical doctors Oz came up with this questionnaire. Doctors say that there are warning signs that happen before a big health problems occur and Doctor Oz wanted people to be aware of these signs. He gave the viewers and the audience a questionnaire that a panel of doctors helped to put together.

Carol Ash DO is a sleep medicine specialist that was on Doctor Oz’s panel of experts on the show today. She explained that you need an average of 8 hours of sleep at night. If you have chronic lack or disrupted sleep you are at risk for developing diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Lack of sleep can also impair your immune system. Additionally, not having enough good sleep at night can interrupt your thinking and can cause daytime accidents.
