Research published in this week’s journal Nature (January 18 2007) helps shed light on how the Spanish Flu virus was able to kill 50 million worldwide in 1918. Scientists were able to reconstruct the original Spanish Flu virus from genetic material of its victims. They used a special “reverse genetics process” to reconstruct the virus.

The Spanish flu ravaged the world at the end of World War I. It was unknown exactly how or why this flu was so lethal. In fact, researchers were not able to identify any influenza virus until 1933.

Scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison infected monkeys with their recreated-virus. They found that the 1918 virus prompted a deadly respiratory infection that echoed historical accounts of how the disease claimed its victims.
