Oak Hills Project Withdrawn – Mitzelfelt Said Developer Was A Good Neighbor – Builder Says He Pushed Envelope

(Best Syndication) Jim Tatum, president of American Housing Group who had planned on developing half acre lots in Oak Hills has withdrawn the proposed project. Local residents had been fighting the project for months.

The Oak Hills Property Owners Association (OHPOA) met with Jim Tatum on Thursday to discuss other options for that land. The OHPOA spent years developing a plan for their community which includes 2 ½ acre lot sizes. The proposed development called for 197 lots on 148 acres. Even Tatum believes this may not have conformed to their community plan.

(Best Syndication) Sheriff’s Sergeant Robert Copley, commander out of the Phelan substation, told the Pinon Hills Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) on Thursday that the high desert got an OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) grant from the state and will be running off road patrols for OHV violators.

The grant totals $140,000 for equipment, including 4 KTM Enduros and 15 sets of gear for the deputies. The special team set up by the Sheriff’s department will be covering areas where the Sheriff’s department gets complaints. He said that if there are no complaints, they will likely not patrol the area with their new task force.

(Best Syndication) The Department of Water Resources (DWR) announced today that it will stop pumping at State Water Project (SWP) facilities in the Delta in an effort to provide maximum protection for Delta smelt. This is hoped to protect juvenile smelt between May 25 and May 31 at the Harvey O. Banks pumping plant facility.

"Drastic times call for drastic measures," said DWR Director Lester Snow. "While there are clearly many factors at play in the current decline of smelt in the Delta, we must act on the one that is within our control. That is why DWR will stop pumping in the Delta as a preventative measure to protect threatened fish that are currently located near our facilities."

(Best Syndication) The Oak Hills Property Owners Association (OHPOA) President Herb Morin said “We believe strongly in a community to determine their own destiny.” Morin’s remarks were made at a town hall meeting sponsored by the group at the Baldy Mesa Elementary School on Monday, and stem from a planned high-density developments on property located in the Oak Hills Community Plan zone.

County Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt spoke and took questions at the meeting on Monday. After opening statements which included Mitzelfelt’s efforts to bring jobs and businesses to the area, he fielded questions from the audience. Although most in attendance were from the Oak Hills community, there were attendees from Pinon Hills, Phelan and Hesperia as well.

(Best Syndication) County Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt spoke at the Baldy Mesa Elementary School in Baldy Mesa on Monday night. The town hall meeting was hosted by the Oak Hills Property Owners Association (OHPOA). The residents of Oak Hills are concerned about a proposed variance in their plan and zoning to accommodate a mobile home park.

Like many communities in the high desert, Oak Hills residents are concerned about high density residential projects moving it their neighborhood. The Oak Hills community is especially concerned about a large manufactured housing project called the High Desert Estates.
