Governor Calls For Special Election For Assembly District

(Best Syndication News) Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called for a special election to fill the vacancy in the 17th State Senate district left by George Runner. The district includes sections of the high desert, San Fernando Valley and Ventura County.

The primary election will be held on February 15, 2011 followed by a general election on April 19, 2011.

Candidates will need to file as a candidate by 5:00pm, January 3, 2011. The term will last through 2012.

Proposition 14 will change the dynamics of this election. Voters will be allowed to cast their vote in the primary for any candidate, regardless of party. According to David Wert with the county of San Bernardino, candidates will not need to designate their party.

(Best Syndication News) While Republicans are getting closer to controlling the House of Representatives, the Democrats are one vote from having a majority in the Senate. Jerry Brown has a three percent edge over Meg Whitman in the California governor’s race and Barbara Boxer is leading Carly Fiorina by one percentage point in the Senate race.

As of this writing, the Democrats have 144 seats in the House compared to 211 Republican. The Democrats, including two independents that support the party, have 50 seats in the Senate compared to 46 Republican seats.

(Best Syndication News) Today local Republican Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) said that his number-one job is create jobs. “Unemployment is the single most important challenge facing America today”, the Congressman said in a statement.

McKeon, a Congressman since 1993, says that he supports the governing principals of the new GOP “Pledge to America”. His goal is kill tax hikes, give businesses an tax deduction and cut red tape.

Here in the High Desert, there is a focus on aerospace and the defense industry. Michael Orme, field representative for the congressman, tells Best Syndication that the High Desert Aerospace Defense Coalition has tasked itself with bringing high-tech jobs to the region.

Hip-Hop Artist Wyclef Jean wants to be President of Haiti

(Best Syndication News) - Born in Haiti, Hip-Hop artist, Wyclef Jean, 37, is planning on announcing his candidacy for the President of Haiti which is up for election this November.

Jean moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was 9 year old and then moved again to New Jersey. He is married and the couple adopted a daughter in 2005.

Jean tells People Magazine that he is running because of the corruption that Haiti has experienced for the last two hundred years. He also decided to run for president after the devastating earthquake that happened on January 12th this year.

Jean said that he was a UN Goodwill ambassador for a couple of years and he has a charity set up in 2005, called the Yéle Haiti Foundation.

Unemployment Extension gets House Approval

(Best Syndication News) - The House of Representatives approved the unemployment benefits extension bill with 272-152 votes in favor of the bill only one day after being sent from the Senate. The next step is for President Obama to sign the the unemployment benefits extension into law.

Unemployment benefits extension bill has passed Senate with a vote of 59-39. Since June 2nd there have been approximately 2.5 million people that have had their unemployment benefits lapse. In California, there are around 400,000 that have lost their benefits since the beginning of June. The new legislation will restore these unemployment benefits to those people retroactively.
