According to an
Australian newspaper The Herald Sun, a group of Victorian scientists
discovered the gene that is responsible that contributes to the
development of Type 2 Diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is
not just an epidemic in the United States. Australia is greatly
impacted with 100,000 newly diagnosed patients each year. The reason
for the dramatic increase of type 2 diabetes is due to the dietary
choices and lack of exercise.
ChemGenex
Pharmaceuticals scientists from Geelong would want to develop a DNA
diagnostic test that would be on the Australian market in 2 years. They
could test the DNA by taking a swab to the inside of the patient’s
mouth.
The PSARL gene
would be detected and give a preliminary warning that they would be at
risk for diabetes. By knowing that they will be at a greater risk the
scientists hope that people will change their dietary and physical
activity before the onset of type 2 diabetes.
