The Smart Car is
now going to be sold in the USA by a company called ZAP. It is a tiny
car that you may have seen in the new Pink Panther movie with Steve
Martin you may also see the Smart Car in the just released, “The Da
Vinci Code” movie. The car that is featured in the movies is called a
ForTwo model which fits 2 passengers.
The Smart Car has
been sold since 1998 throughout the world. ZAP is the company that
wants to distribute the automobile in the United States. Currently they
are looking to set up dealerships across the country.
The engine is in
the back of the vehicle and is a 3 cylinder that is rated at 61 bhp.
The Smart car will only go up to 85 mph. They claim that the reason for
lowering the maximum speed will help the automobiles fuel efficiency.
The gas tank holds 8.7 gallons. You can get the vehicle in automatic or
manual.
The Smart Car is
not a hybrid or is it an electric car; it runs on regular unleaded
gasoline. Because of the size of the vehicle it is very fuel
efficient. The EPA rating for the city and highway is 40 miles per
gallon. This is very comparable to hybrid vehicles.
The size of the
vehicle is half that of a normal vehicle. The measurements of the Smart
Car are 8’ 2.5” in length and 4’ 11.5” width and 5’ in height. The
vehicle weighs in at only 1,588 lbs.
The Smart Car has
humorous color names marketed to the younger drivers. The colors are
called “lite white”, “phat red”, “jack black” and “star blue metallic”.
They advertise that the body panels are exchangeable.
The Smart Car
comes standard with power steering, power windows and door locks. The
upgrade options include air conditioning, convertible, alloy wheels,
leather interior, fog lights, sunroof, and bike rack.
Most of the Smart
Car inventories Zap will stock initially are the luxury car models.
They are expected to sell for around $25,000. If they have the basic
model it would cost less.
