Google Video
and U.S. archivist Allen Weinstein are working together on a pilot
program to compile 103 films to put online for free download. The
films include movies, documentaries, and other cinematic creations
that are archived in Washington, D.C.
"This is an
important step to achieve our goal to become an archive without
walls," Weinstein said. "For the first time, the public will be able
to view this collection of rare and unusual films on the Internet
emphasizing the importance of providing access to records anytime,
anywhere."
You can access
the videos at both Google Video and at the National Archives
website. The films are of newsreels about World War II and NASA
documentaries on the space program. There is also one of the
earliest films from 1894 called “Camencita – Spanish Dance.” There
is also a film showing the beginning of the national and state park
system. Another film shows how the Boulder Dam was made.
Google has
added print online as well as video online. The Google Video
service has both free videos to watch as well as paid viewing. CBS
television shows are available to download at a price. You can also
watch music videos, some are free and some are $1.99. You can also
watch NBA games at Google Video.
You can download the video to
watch so that you will not have to have jerky playback. You
can find a sneak peak of the video at the National Archive website
and on Google video website. I found it easier to browse on the
National Archive website.
