Speakers at Florida Libertarian Conference

Speakers at Florida Libertarian Conference

Jim Babka

Boca Raton, FL--The Libertarian Party of Florida Convention and Conference will host major speakers on problems in government (http://lpf2006.org/speakers.html). They include a Libertarian tax-slashing, public service increasing mayor and representatives from an organization of policemen determined to end the Drug War.

The problems are sometimes maddeningly mundane. Jim Babka of the activist group DownSize DC is coordinating a campaign to encourage legislators to actually read the laws they pass. Many legislators admit that most laws are passed unread by the people whose job is to craft them and understand what they mean, they say. The Florida Libertarian Party is the first and only political party whose candidates are expected to read what they pass.

They'll also discuss solutions. Libertarian mayor Will Marshall of Utah decriminalized marihuana, abolished his salary, and cut administrative costs to the point where taxes plummeted 54%. For good measure, he paved all the city streets.

Carla Howell will discuss her work advocating a small government model and effective activism. Her work on an anti-tax amendment created a re-evaluation of tax policy in her home state.

Robert Poole, a frequent guest on ABC's 20/20 and Vice-Presidential advisor, will also speak. He is a leading expert on Libertarian policy approaches from the REASON Foundation, which he founded.

Representatives from LEAP will do a presentation on why a growing number of police have decided the Libertarians are on-target in their denunciation of drug regulation.

Organizers also expect an opportunity for conferees to meet representatives from India who are working on forming a Libertarian Party there. India has several influential Libertarian-oriented think tanks credited with creating momentum a massive tax reduction policy.

The event begins March 24, and is open to the public.
