At least eight bombs exploded on commuter trains and in rail stations
during the evening rush hour Tuesday in Bombay, India. The Hindu News
agency in India reports that at least 190 persons were killed in the
explosions and at lest 625 were injured.
As rescue workers helped shocked passengers from the wreckage,
authorities were calling the explosions a synchronized terrorist
attack. Although there have not been any claims for responsibility, the
local authorities say that previous attacks in Bombay were committed by
Muslim groups motivated by sectarian hatred.
Vilasrao Deshmukh, the chief minister of Maharashtra state told a local
television station that “This is a painful incident. I see this as a
part of a larger conspiracy." Just a few hours before the blasts a
series of grenade attacks killed at least eight Indian tourists and
injured more than 30 other people in the summer capital of the Indian
controlled portion of Kashmir called Srinagar. Comment on this article at our Forum
The explosions occurred between 6 and 6:30 p.m. This is the busiest
time for the Bombay transit system. There have been reports of rescue
workers collecting scattered limbs and bundling them up to send to the
hospital.
Kashmir has been a disputed territory between India and Pakistan.
President Bush said that the United States will stand with India in the
war on terrorism. "Such acts only strengthen the resolve of the
international community to stand united against terrorism and to declare
unequivocally that there is no justification for the vicious murder of
innocent people," he said.
