Symptoms for Eye Fungus Infection Fusarium Keratitis - Stop Using ReNu MoistureLoc Contact Lens Solution FDA Says– Discard Immediately

ReNu

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) supports Bausch and Lomb’s decision to voluntarily withdraw ReNu MoistureLoc contact lens solution from the market.  The agency began an investigation into the Greenville, SC manufacturing plant on March 22nd and will be continuing to inspect their facilities next week.

The FDA is not certain whether Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu MoistureLoc is responsible for the Fusarium keratitis eye fungus outbreak.  The FDA is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in this investigation, according to the FDA.

ABC News reported that the FDA announced today that consumers should immediately stop using and discard ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution, as more cases of fungal infections have been reported among people using the product.

"Discard all remaining MoistureLoc solution, including partially used or opened bottles. Consult your doctor about choosing an appropriate alternative cleaning/disinfecting product," the FDA warns in a new public health notification.

Federal health authorities are investigating 109 cases of in the United State of people who have contracted the rare corneal fungus infection.  According to the FDA, of the 30 cases they have investigated, most of those infected with the virus had been using MoistureLoc.  Three of the patients needed corneal transplants.

The FDA says that contact lens wearers should always wash their hands with soap and water before touching their eyes or contacts.  Contacts should be discarded after the time specified by the manufacturer.  Always follow the guidelines for both storage and cleaning, and the FDA says that the lens case should be cleaned regularly and replaced every 3-6 months.

The symptoms for Fusarium keratitis is redness and pain, tearing, an increased sensitivity to light, blurred vision, swelling and a possible discharge from the eye.
