It appears the outbreak of the Fusarium keratitis infection outbreak may
be from the used Bausch & Lomb Inc.'s newest lens cleaner, ReNu with
MoistureLoc. The Centers for Disease Control released a report Friday
that confirms Bausch & Lomb’s explanation that an ingredient unique to
their cleaning solution can inadvertently prevent proper disinfection of
contact lenses in instances of poor hygiene.
The CDC reports that out of the 130 confirmed cases, 125 reported
wearing contact lenses and 118 were able to identify which contact lens
solution(s) they had used during the month before onset of infection.
The CDC says that 64% reported using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with
MoistureLoc alone, while 12% said they used it with another product.
The report says that only 7% used another unspecified Bausch & Lomb
solution, and 18% reported using only products other than MoistureLoc,
from various manufacturers.
