Fertility Treatments Not As Effective As Natural Method - Infertility Experts Recommend Infertile Couples to Keep Trying

Health

Amazingly, it appears some women that undergo fertility treatments are less likely to get pregnant than those that don’t.  These treatments can be very expensive and produce multiple births, so researchers in the Netherland hope to identify women with unexplained infertility.

About 10 percent of couples have trouble conceiving after one year of trying. Of these, one third do not have any obvious problems.

The most common treatment is intrauterine insemination (IUI).  This involves collecting sperm and medically inserting it into the uterus.  Fertility drugs are then prescribed which stimulate egg production.

The researchers compared the outcomes of couples that underwent IUI and those that did not.  The amazing thing is that the women that did not undergo the treatments had a slightly better chance of achieving an ongoing pregnancy.

The researchers believe that they can determine which couples are likely to benefit from treatment.  Pieternel Steures, of the Center for Reproductive Medicine in Amsterdam wrote in the July 15th issue of the journal The Lancet, “Our study shows that identification of couples who will not benefit from intrauterine insemination is possible.”
