It is a sad day today because I just found out Tom Delay will not be
running for re-election, and plans to do something else, quite possibly
becoming a lobbyist. I believe he would make a great lobbyist because
he has been on the inside for so long. He understands what motivates
congressional leaders more than most on capital hill.
It will be great to watch the Texas Republican follow in the footsteps
of other great lobbyists like Jack Abramoff.
He may be resigning because he needs more time to defend himself from
his legal troubles. Delay was indicted in Texas last year concerning
campaign-finance irregularities and possible illegal activity. To the
dismay of many Democrats, Delay decided to step down as House Majority
Leader. It would have been great to have the sitting Republican Leader
under indictment.
If Delay would have decided to stay in the House, TV viewers could have
watched the media circus surrounding his trial. It may not have brought
the intense attention that the Michael Jackson trial brought, but it
would have been thrilling for those of us who know that pretty much all
of our elected officials will sell the American people.
Those that think Jack Abramoff was just an aberration should not be
allowed to vote. There is a reason why the deficit balloons with each
new administration. That reason has to do with corrupt politicians.
Delay is just one of a few that got caught.
Recently Randy “Duke” Cunningham, a former congressman from California,
was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison for collecting
$2.4 million in bribes. I am sure that those that gave Cunningham the
2.4 mil, including defense contractors, felt the money was well spent
and probably received a substantial return on their bribery investment.
So what is the solution? The solution involves going against human
nature. Americans will need to vote for conservatives, not fiscally
liberal Republicans like George Bush, Delay and Cunningham. We need to
realize that government is not the solution to our problems.
