New Gastric Pacemaker FDA Approval for Weight Loss

New Gastric Pacemaker FDA Approval for Weight Loss

Gastric Pacemaker

A new implantable device is up for approval by the FDA which appears to reduce the appetite. The device is similar to a heart pacemaker but the electrodes are implanted into the stomach and not the heart.

The ABC News program 20/20 recently aired a segment describing the procedure.  It appears to be a safe and effective for treating obesity.  Individuals considering the more risky gastric bypass surgery should think about this safer treatment.

While the patient is under general anesthesia surgeons use a laparoscope to make small holes in the abdomen.  They place small electrical wires into the wall of the stomach.  The wires are attached to a battery pack about the size of a silver dollar that is placed just under the skin. New Gastric Pacemaker FDA Approval for Weight Loss

Hoodia Marketing Frenzy Has Consumers Confused

Hoodia Marketing Frenzy Has Consumers Confused

Hoodia

With the popularity of Hoodia Gordonii as an all natural appetite suppressant and weight loss aid at an all time high, so to is the confusion over it. Consumers don't know what to look for when purchasing, and more recently, there is controversy over dosage. The confusion is being fueled by those marketing it.

Quality hoodia is either pure Hoodia, or Hoodia in a formula, from the Kalahari Desert areas of South Africa. Hoodia from Texas, Mexico or China has not been shown in clinical trials to suppress appetite and aid in weight loss. Much of the very inexpensive Hoodia on the market is sourced in places other than South Africa.

A quality Hoodia product is obtained using only the "core" or the heart of the stems of the Hoodia Gordonii plant. Of the 20 or more species of Hoodia, the Gordonii is the one that contains the active molecule P57 that acts on the hypothalamus to suppress hunger pangs. Many other Hoodia species may be on the store shelves but they will have no effect on your appetite.  Hoodia Marketing Frenzy Has Consumers Confused

ADHD and Learning Disabilities - new Treatment - new Hope

Lovastatin

There is a promising new discovery about a drug that helps in learning disabilities.  The drug called Lovastatin, is a commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering medicine available today.  The discovery was by Neurobiologist Alcino Silva and colleagues at the University of California - Los Angeles and it offers new hope for many people.

Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is the condition that Lovastatin hopefully will be able to fix in the future.  This condition affects more that 1 in 3,000 people.  It is either inherited, or an isolated mutation, which is then inheritable.   NF1 symptoms cause the person developmental cognitive disabilities in up to half who are carriers of the defective gene.  It shows up as deficits in memory, motor coordination, and spatial learning.  It is also know to cause attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Diet Pills and Dance Exercise may be Effective way to Lose Weight

Richard Simmons

There are a multitude of diet pills on the market.  Many of them have a proven track record and are safe to use.  There is evidence that Hoodia and Tonalin will help you to reduce weight.  Both are over the counter diet pills that will help you curb your appetite.

There is another side to the equation though.  Most reputable weight loss programs will stress the exercise variable in their equation.  You need to get up and move around.  But what type of exercise is best?

Everybody has their favorites.  Some would favor weight training and others would favor aerobics.  Many exercise gurus recommend a little of both.  Diet Pills and Dance Exercise may be Effective way to Lose Weight

Study Finds Common Supplements and Diet can Help Prevent Disease

Folic Acid

The old saying “you are what you eat” may have more evidence to bolster its claims. Rats were injected with a specific amino acid which changed the way their genes were expressed.  It may be possible that dietary supplements or drugs could permanently halt the genetic effects that predispose people to mental and physical illnesses.

The research was conducted at the McGill University in Montreal Canada by Moshe Szyf, Michael Meaney and their colleagues.  They found that certain nutrients and supplements changed genetics by switching off certain genes in rodents, as reported in EureAlert. Study Finds Common Supplements and Diet can Help Prevent Disease

Over the Counter Diet Pills Hoodia and Tonalin Work

Hoodia Plant

There are a couple promising diet pills on the market.  Some of the new pills will need a doctor’s prescription while others won’t.  The new pills work best when combined with exercise and a diet change.  Lowering your caloric intake and adding a workout three times a week will double the weight loss in some patients.

Meridia and Xenical require a doctor’s prescription and could prove to be costly on a monthly basis.  Some patients have gained back weight when the treatment is removed so they may need to be taken for life.

Tonalin and Hoodia can be purchased over the counter without a prescription.  Tonalin has been shown to be a natural and effective method of weight management.  Tonalin contains Conjugated linoeic acid or CLA.  CLA contains a derivative of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid, is a patented dietary supplement shown in a clinical trial to reduce body fat mass (BFM) in healthy, overweight adults.  Over the Counter Diet Pills Hoodia and Tonalin Work

Safe and Effective

Two new diet pills have been shown to be safe and effective.  A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Nov. 17th shows that the drug Meridia may double weight loss when used in conjunction with exercise and diet.  A second drug Xenical (orlistat) has also been approved for safe and effective weight loss.

The researchers found the group taking Meridia in conjunction with exercise lost twice as much weight as the group that did not exercise.  The group that exercised also changed their diet.

Meridia works by modifying the brain chemicals to lower appetite.  The subjects felt fuller faster.  Researchers stressed that the spectacular results came with a lifestyle change combined with the drug.  New Safe and Effective Diet Pills Meridia and Rimonabant

New Found Obestatin Hormone may help Dieters lose Weight

Obestatin Diet?

Scientists have discovered a new hormone that will decrease appetite.  Scientists at Stanford University discovered the hormone Obestatin and have tested it on mice.  They hope to develop a treatment for obesity.

Dr. Aaron J.W. Hsueh who led the study found that the Obestatin hormone is produced in mice naturally and is likely to be produced in humans as well.  Mice that were injected with a synthetic form of Obestatin decreased their food intake by half.  They ate only 1/2 gram of kibble instead of one gram compared to the mice that did not get the injection.

Even more important, the mice gained less weight when injected with Obestatin.  The control group gained 2 grams of weight over a week while the injected mice gained only 1.1 gram. .New Found Obestatin Hormone may help Dieters lose Weight

How to Pick a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan

How to Pick a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is a plan where insurance companies can offer different programs.  The programs can vary from state to state. Many seniors will be forced to join the new Program D even though it is extremely confusing for most.

The first thing you will need to do is to write down each medication you use.  Then examine the programs one by one to determine which programs will cover your prescriptions.  Separate these programs from the ones that will not cover your medicine.

This is the daunting task.  There are many insurance companies in each state and many of these companies will offer multiple Part D plans.  Besides being confusing it is a lot of work.  How to Pick a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan

Previous studies have indicated the CPAP (Constant Positive Air Pressure) treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has benefited patients with heart failure, high blood pressure and more.  It is  proven treatment for OSA.

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine concerning sleep apnea is not conclusive but makes claims concerning the ineffectiveness of the treatment.  This article will examine the curious claims made by the Yale Study.

The study said “Nonetheless, our study demonstrated an increased risk of stroke or death from any cause among patients with the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome despite the administration of various therapies”.  What do various therapies mean?  Was CPAP lumped in with other therapies?  Obstructive Sleep Apnea Stroke Study Flaws with Regard to CPAP

Skin Structure

Protection from exposure to the sun a necessity for healthy skin.  Growing up, I’m sure we’ve all heard our mothers say “Go get some sun, you need your vitamin D.” These days however, the risks of sun damage are a very real concern. Ironically, skin care studies show that Vitamin D produced in the body with the help of exposure to sunlight is the very thing that can help the body to fight skin cancers. But exactly how much time is safe to spend in the sun without the benefit of any sunscreen? And what sunscreen is best for when we do spend a lot of time outdoors?  Skin care basics should always include a good sunscreen

New Study reveals why H5N1 bird flu in Humans so Deadly

Blocked airways

There is new understanding as to why the bird flu is so deadly to humans.  The H5N1 virus triggers cytokines and chemokines which are inflammatory proteins at a ratio of 10 times more than a common flu.

The experiments were conducted on human cells with the h5N1 virus and compared against the H1N1 common flu strain.  Because of the dramatic increase of these inflammatory proteins it can cause the air passages to inflame making it hard to breathe.  It also increases respiratory distress and pneumonia.  New Study reveals why H5N1 bird flu in Humans so Deadly

Women that drink coffee may not show an increase in blood pressure.  According to a new study appearing in the November 9th issue of Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) coffee drinking has no links to temporary hypertension or even persistent high blood pressure.

The Study, authored by Dr. Wolfgang Winkelmayer assessed the relationship between coffee intake and physician diagnosed hypertension (blood pressure).  They did find that cola consumption increased the risk for hypertension.

Caffeine “acutely” increases blood pressure according the team.  The study followed women that were free from physician diagnosed hypertension for 12 years.  Through questionnaires they compared coffee and cola intake with blood pressure. Aura CPAP Machine

CPAP machines have come a long way over the years.  New machines are incredibly quiet and compact.  AEIOMed has come out with a new machine that runs off a battery pack.  This means you can take it with you camping or still use it when the power goes out.  It is about time someone came out with such a device.

The new CPAP machine Aura is very compact also.  It sits upright so there is room on the nightstand for clocks and other appliances.  An optional battery pack and battery can be purchased.

The Aura features automatic altitude adjustment and patient adjustable ramp.  The ramp is a great feature because it lowers the pressure of the CPAP initially so it is easier to fall asleep.  Both the ramp and working pressure can be adjusted between 4 and 20 cm H2O.  New Aura Portable Battery Powered CPAP Machine

Shielding Lotions reflect

Expecting a first child is one of the most exciting times in a woman’s life, and taking basic preventative measures, such as the use of shielding lotions, can help minimize or prevent the effects of common skin disorders resulting from pregnancy-induced changes to her body.

According to the March of Dimes, common skin conditions plaguing a woman during her nine months of gestation range from improved or worsened acne:flare-ups in existing eczema and psoriasis; bluish discoloration or blotchy skin in the legs; bhloasma - the "mask of pregnancy" or melasma - "glowing" skin from increased blood flow and skin oils; itchiness and dry skin; stretch marks; dark line on the belly; changes in fingernail or toenail growth and appearance; puffiness; rashes, red or itchy palms from increases in the hormone estrogen; skin tags, spider veins; and darkening skin.  Mothers-to-be consider Shielding Lotions for relief from skin disorders during pregnancy

Q.: Dan, my mother has some type of program that pays her Medicare premium. I have heard that she will now have to pay this Medicare premium even with her income less than $1,000.00 per month. I have read that because of this she will not qualify for the new prescription drug law. Why so late in the game does this happen? Natural Pain Relief solves aches caused by everyday work or play

Natural Pain Relief solves aches caused by everyday work or play

Natural Pain Relief

According to the Center for Work and Health, thirteen percent of the total US workforce experiences a loss in productive time due to common pain complaints. Headache is the most common of these pain complaints, followed by back pain.

The conclusion of the study? Pain is an inordinately common and disabling condition in the US workforce. And while there are many prescription medications available, recent scares about serious side effects have brought natural pain relief remedies into the spotlight.

Most of the pain-related lost productive time occurs while employees are at work and is in the form of reduced performance. Using a prescription remedy can contribute to this reduced performance as they tend to dull your senses. Many Americans prefer a natural pain relief remedy in order to stay alert.  Natural Pain Relief solves aches caused by everyday work or play

Helping Seniors Choose A Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan

David Thau

As with most things in our modern technical age, the Internet is the information highway that most people are getting used to traveling. Details covering every single subject are available at the touch of a button or as is commonly stated, 'by word of mouse'. Information about Medicare Part D is no exception and pages of data are easily accessible to most people familiar with the Internet.

To gather a broad spectrum of data in order to make an educated decision requires two main prerequisites: That you own a computer, and that you are sufficiently computer literate to be able to search for the information that you need. Whether it is a matter of financial limitation or reluctance to keep up with modern technology many Senior Citizens don't have the luxury of a computer in spite of the fact that the cost seems to be getting well within the reach of the average man in the street. Unwillingness to get "one of these new fangled gadgets" sometimes also plays a part.

The monthly cost for Medicare benefits in California will be about $25.41 when offered by companies set up solely to provide Medicare drug coverage. That compares with a national average premium of approximately $32.20, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which administer the federal health program for seniors and the disabled.

"It’s a robust market," said Gary Karr, a spokesman for Medicare. "There are a lot of companies competing for business in California", he added.

Data released on Monday revealed that other Western States will also have lower than average premiums, including Hawaii at $27.44 and Arizona at $28.08 but California still beats them all. North Carolina is the highest at $36.86 followed closely by Louisiana at $36.85.

Viagra

According to research at the John Hopkins University Viagra may reduce the effects of hormonal stress on the heart by 50 percent.  Viagra expands blood vessels and has recently been used as a treatment for pulmonary hypertension. The effect of expanding blood vessels is how Viagra aids in maintaining erections.

Earlier studies by lead researcher Dr. David Kass, a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins, found that Viagra blocked the short-term effects of hormonal stress in the hearts of mice.  Amazingly, Viagra prevented and reversed the long-term cardiac effects of chronic high blood pressure.

In this study, 35 men and women without signs of heart disease were given two injections of dobutamine over a three hour period.  Between the injections some of the participants were given Viagra and others were given a placebo.    Viagra may help Treat and Prevent Heart Failure due to Stress

New Research may find a way to Lower Blood Pressure without Drugs

Blood Pressure

If you suffer from high blood pressure like I do, you are always looking for ways to lower it without medication.  We may try to control our breathing or diet.  Some of us (me included) take medications.

It appears that researchers in London have found the exact location in the brain where blood pressure is regulated. They have found the exact area of the brain that controls blood pressure.

The team of neurosurgeons and physiologists at the Oxford University and Imperial College in London has found that by stimulating specific regions of the brain with electrodes, they can make the patient’s blood pressure increase or decrease.

Similar techniques  have been used to relieve pain and to alleviate symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.  They found the blood pressure changes were accompanied by analogous changes in diastolic blood pressure and pulse. New Research may find a way to Lower Blood Pressure without Drugs

What to look for when comparing Medicare Part D Plans

What to look for when comparing Medicare Part D Plans

What to know

Medicare Part D may not be right for everyone, but it is important to determine if it is right for you.  You could end up paying large sums out of pocket if you opt not to join or join the wrong plan.

Basically, the Administration wanted to put some competition into the Insurance / Medicare market.  Insurance providers submit prescription coverage plans that vary in cost and medication coverage.  You should be careful and choose the plan that best suits your needs.

The Federal Government has set minimum guidelines for insurance companies that want to participate in Part D coverage.  Some insurers will exceed the minimum.  Part D requires recipients to pay an insurance premium, just like any insurance plan.  Premiums are likely to cost between $15 and $45 per month.  What to look for when comparing Medicare Part D Plans
