FDA Panel Votes to Ban Primatene Mist for Asthma - Over the Counter (OTC) Sales likely to End

FDA Panel Votes to Ban Primatene Mist for Asthma - Over the Counter (OTC) Sales likely to End

Primatene Mist

Over the counter inhalers will be banned if a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Panel has their way.  The ban would not be because the inhalers are dangerous to the user, but because the propellants may harm the ozone layer.  This may lead to a ban on Primatene Mist on other similar inhalers.

The advisory panel voted 11-7 to recommend the FDA remove the “essential use” status of the Primatene Mist and other non-prescription inhalers.  Since the FDA usually follows their outside panels recommendation, the over the counter (OTC) inhalers will likely be banned completely.  It will take a few months before the FDA makes their final ruling but there will be a public comment on the subject.  FDA Panel Votes to Ban Primatene Mist for Asthma - Over the Counter (OTC) Sales likely to End

Statin Drugs Recommended for those Undergoing Surgery to Fight Infections - Prevent Sepsis

Crestor various strengths

Statins may lower the risk of major infections, according to a study published in this weeks The Lancet.  Statins are a class of drugs that lower cholesterol.  Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol, Lesocol, Crestor and Mevacor are all statin drugs.

These statin drugs may have side effects including liver and kidney damage according to the newmediaexplorer.org website.  The Bayer statin Baycol was removed from the market because of these side effects.

There may be some good side effects as well.  Researchers analyzed 69,000 patients who were initially hospitalized for a heart problem.  They followed these patients and found that those who used statin drugs were much less likely to develop sepsis than those that did not use the drug.  Sepsis is a massive bloodstream infection.  Statin Drugs Recommended for those Undergoing Surgery to Fight Infections  - Prevent Sepsis

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Benefits and Risks - Heart Disease vs Cancer and Stroke

Brigham Hospital

Women that start hormone replacement therapy (HRT) at a younger age are better off than women who start 10 years after menopause begins or after the age of 60, according to a new study.  Dr. JoAnn E. Manson of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston said “The timing of hormone therapy in relation to age and time since menopause may be a key factor in whether these hormones protect the heart or increase risk of heart disease.”

Manson and her colleagues were interested in the association between heart disease and HRT, as they relate to age.  They utilized women in the Nurses’ Health Study that was conducted between 1976 and 2000 to correlate a relationship.  From this data the team found that women who started HRT near the beginning of menopause had a significantly reduced risk of heart disease compared with women who didn't start HRT.  Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Benefits and Risks - Heart Disease vs Cancer and Stroke

Study Says Omega-3 Fatty Acids Does Not Prevent Cancer - Fish Contains Omega3

Study Says Omega-3 Fatty Acids Does Not Prevent Cancer - Fish Contains Omega3

Omega 3 source

It appears that eating fish and taking supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids does not reduce cancer risk.  Catherine H. MacLean, M.D., Ph D, of RAND Health in Santa Monica California, and her colleagues looked at 38 articles published between 1966 and October 2005, and abstracted detailed data about the incidence of cancer.

They compared cancer incidence with consumption of omega-3 and the elapsed time between the intervention and the “outcome measurements”.  Some of the epidemiological studies found that people that consume diets high in omega-3 fatty acids have a lower rate of some types of cancer.  The omega-3 acids are found in fish and some vegetables.

Some of the smaller trials have attempted to connect omega-3 consumption with a lower incidence of cancer.  A number of dietary supplements containing omega-3 have labels that suggest that omega-3 fatty acids “protect against cancer”, even though the studies have reported mixed results. Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Linked to Heart Disease - Impotence and Blood Pressure and Diabetes

Viagra

According to three new research studies, men with erectile dysfunction (ED) are more likely to have heart disease than their counterparts.  Studies in the US and Canada have found that men with ED are more likely to have diabetes and high blood pressure.

The studies took place at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University Of Chicago Medical Center, and the Montreal General Hospital and McGill University in Quebec Canada.  Best Syndication has published previous articles concerning studies that establish Viagra as a treatment for heart failure and heart disease.  See our special Heart and Lung section for those stories.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) one in five American men suffer from ED, and older men are more likely to experience ED.  UCLA researchers found that the more severe the ED, the more sever the heart disease. This study looked at 2,126 men over the age of 20.  The men were questioned about their sexual function and underwent a physical examination.  Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Linked to Heart Disease - Impotence and Blood Pressure and Diabetes

A new study in the upcoming issue of CANCER medical journal reports of the increased rate of the deadly melanoma skin cancer among California Hispanics.

Hispanics have increased cases of melanoma compared to Caucasians and they tend to have confined thicker lesions which are more deadly.  Melanoma is not the most common type of skin cancer, but it is the most deadly.  Skin cancer is usually more dangerous when more layers of skin is penetrated with the tumor.  Melanoma cancer typically was at the highest risk for fair-skinned people.  Skin Cancer Melanoma have increased in California Hispanics

FDA Panel Approves Orlistat (Xenical) For Over-The-Counter Sales - First Weight Loss - Diet Pill to ever be Approved by the FDA

FDA Panel Approves Orlistat (Xenical) For Over-The-Counter Sales - First Weight Loss - Diet Pill to ever be Approved by the FDA

Xenical

The weight loss drug orlistat (currently marketed as Xenical by Roche) may be available over-the-counter (OTC) soon.  A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel of doctors and scientists voted to recommend that the regulatory agency approve orlistat for over-the-counter sales today.  The FDA must still make the final approval.

The advisory panel vote was 11-2 to recommend approval.  It is likely the FDA will approve the drug for OTC sales.  This will be the first nonprescription weigh-loss drug approved for use in the United States by the FDA.

Xenical’s main rival is Abbott Laboratories Inc.’s Maridia.  Meridia works by suppressing the appetite.  Xenical is a fat-blocker but has some negative side effects. Its biggest drawbacks are excessive gas and uncontrollable bowel movements. FDA Warns Consumers Not To Use Brazilian Diet Supplements - Emergence Sim and Herbathin Imported From Brazil

Herbathin

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says Emagece Sim and Herbathin diet pills are not safe and could lead to very serious side effects.  According to the FDA the dietary supplement Herbathin may contain several active ingredients including controlled substances.

Both supplements are made in Brazil by Fitoterpicos (sometimes spelled Fytoterapicos) and Phytotherm Sim.  Consumers are advised not to use the two supplements and return them to their supplier.  According to Dr. Steven Galson, Director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, "There are dangers to consumers who purchase diet pills that contain drugs of unknown origin and quality.  These products are not approved by FDA and if people experience side effects, it is difficult to trace problems and for physicians to treat them."  FDA Warns Consumers Not To Use Brazilian Diet Supplements - Emergence Sim and Herbathin Imported From Brazil

Soy Tofu and Supplements Do Not Lower Cholesterol or Prevent Cancer

Soy Tofu and Supplements Do Not Lower Cholesterol or Prevent Cancer

Soy Beans

There have been many claims that soy can improve your health as of late.  Now the American Heart Association concludes soy does not reduce “bad” cholesterol all that much and has no effect on “good” cholesterol.

It also appears the soy component isoflavone does not reduce the symptoms of menopause either.  Soy does not prevent hot flashes, breast, uterine or prostate cancer.  Earlier this month researchers found that soy may worsen certain heart failure conditions.

This may come as a blow to people that switched to soy as a source of protein.  Eating Tofu, soy butter, soy nuts and soy burgers may not be good for the heart even though they are a good source of polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals.  Soy Tofu and Supplements Do Not Lower Cholesterol or Prevent Cancer

Cancer and Lymphoma Warnings on two Eczema Drugs

Elidel Cream

The FDA found two common eczema drugs, Elidel Cream (pimecrolimus) and Protopic Ointment (tacrolimus), have a possible risk for skin cancer and lymphoma. New warning labels are being added to the boxes of these medications to warn patients.

There has not been a concrete direct link for causing cancer; however there have been 78 cancer reports to the FDA with patients that have used these drugs.  The FDA’s Pediatric Drugs Advisory Committee wanted this warning put on packaging a year ago.  This was followed a month later with the FDA issuing a Public Health Advisory letting physicians now of the possible risk.  Cancer and Lymphoma Warnings on two Eczema Drugs

Study Questions Effectiveness of Tamiflu in Preventing the Spread of Bird Flu Virus

Tamiflu

Roche Holding AG reassured the public that their influenza drug Tamiflu is effective against the H5N1 avian influenza virus if administered early.  This is following a controversial study published yesterday by Lancet claiming the drug is not as effective as it has been represented to be.   Roche presented their evidence today at the Central Role for Antivirals in London.

Roches study suggests that Tamiflu can prevent H5N1 mortality in animals but says that further research is needed to determine the appropriate dosages if administered after the first 24 or 48 hours of infection.

The Lancet study was funded by England’s Health Department and the Piemonte region of Italy. They analyzed the data from 50 clinical trials of flu medications including Tamiflu.  Study Questions Effectiveness of Tamiflu in Preventing the Spread of Bird Flu Virus

Wine drinkers eat healthier than Beer drinkers

Wine and Fruit

A study first published in the BMJ online edition showed that wine drinkers had healthier diets than beer drinkers.

The researchers studied data from 3.5 million sales transactions from 98 retail supermarket chains in Denmark over a time period from September 2002 through February 2003.

They organized the data in groups of wine only, beer only, mixed, or non-alcohol consumers.  They also kept track of what items they bought and the total amount of each transaction spent on a shopping trip.

Researchers discovered that wine buyers were more likely to buy healthy food items such as olives, fruit, vegetables, poultry, cooking oil, low-fat cheese, and meat.  Beer consumers bought more often pre-cooked food dishes, sugar, cold cuts, chips, pork, butter or margarine, sausages, lamb, and soft drinks.  Wine drinkers eat healthier than Beer drinkers

Work Related Stress Linked to Heart Disease and Diabetes - British Journal of Medicine

Stress at work

Stress at work can lead to a metabolic syndrome that causes heart disease and diabetes, according to researchers at the University College London.  The exact causes are unclear but there is new evidence for the “biological plausibility” link between work stress and heart disease.

The researchers looked at 10,308 British civil servants between the ages of 35 and 55 over a 14 year period.  They measured work stress four times between 1985 and 1999 and they also measured risk factors for the metabolic syndrome between 1997 and 1999.  These risk factors include obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  The researchers also took into account social position, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption and lack of exercise.  Work Related Stress Linked to Heart Disease and Diabetes  - British Journal of Medicine

FDA Adds new Cancer Warning to Eczema Cream and Ointment Labels - Elidel and Protopic

FDA Adds new Cancer Warning to Eczema Cream and Ointment Labels - Elidel and Protopic

Eczema

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring new labeling for two creams used to treat eczema.  The new cautions are “black box” warnings for possible cancer risks.  Both Elidel Cream (pimecrolimus) and Protopic Ointment (tacrolimus) are prescription drugs and will carry the label warnings.

The Black Box warning is the most serious type of warning and will be located lower on the labels.  According to the FDA the label helps clarify that these drugs are recommended for use as a second-line treatment.  This means that other topical medicines should be tried first.  Also children under 2 years of age should not use the drug.

Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is one of the most common skin disorders seen in infants and children.  It affects 10 to 15 percent of the childhood population.  The causes are not clear, but the chronic itching and dry skin could be caused by an allergic or immune condition.  The redness is caused by scratching.  FDA Adds new Cancer Warning to Eczema Cream and Ointment Labels - Elidel and Protopic

Saturated Fat Overload causes Cells to Die – Increased risk for Diabetes

measuring body fat

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis say that too much saturated fat spurs a protein to kill mammalian cells.

The researchers were able to stop the production of the protein called EF1 A-1 which thrives with high levels of saturated fat palmitate.  When the production of the protein was stopped, it slowed the cell death.  If the cell was abundant with the palmitate fat, the cells would produce the EF1 A-1 protein and this caused these cells to die rapidly.  Saturated Fat Overload causes Cells to Die – Increased risk for Diabetes

Inexpensive Breakthrough Treatment for Cystic Fibrosis Involving Salt Water

Inexpensive Breakthrough Treatment for Cystic Fibrosis Involving Salt Water

Scott Donaldson

Scientists may have discovered a breakthrough treatment for cystic fibrosis (CF).  The treatment is inexpensive, safe and easy to do.  According to researchers at the University of North Carolina, by inhaling a saltwater aerosol solution at least twice a day for between 10 and 15 minutes, patients should be able to avoid a “significant part of the damage the disease causes to their lungs”.

The new saline water treatments appear to promote the “clearance of the naturally occurring mucus the body uses to trap harmful bacteria, viruses and other foreign particles.”  The solution may produce a “water layer” in the lungs promoting the removal.

It now appears the surfaces of the lungs of CF patients are dehydrated.  Healthy people have a 5 to 10 micron thick, coating of water in the lungs that helps lubricate the open areas of the lungs.  By restoring hydration with the hypertonic saline solution, you are treating the “basic cause of this disease”.   Inexpensive Breakthrough Treatment for Cystic Fibrosis Involving Salt Water

Vertebroplasty Back Pain Treatment may Cause Breaks near Fractured Vertebrae

Vertebroplasty Back Pain Treatment may Cause Breaks near Fractured Vertebrae

Fractured Vertebrae

Vertebroplasty is a new procedure that is used to treat pain caused by compression fractures of the spine.  This is usually associated with osteoporosis or similar conditions.  New research from the Mayo Clinic finds that although the treatment is successful in treating one fracture it may cause others.

The treatment has only been used with patients with chronic pain that will not go away due to a fracture.  Each year 700,000 people will suffer an injury to the spine.  The fracture can occur from simple movements such as bending over to tie your shoe or turning in bed.  The pain will go away on its own in four weeks in four out five people.

When the patient’s bones are too weak due to osteoporosis, surgery may not be an option.  Vertebroplasty is the only available treatment option for patients in this condition. Also vertebroplasty is not appropriate for patients with back pain due to ligament injuries, joint disease or narrowing of the spinal canal.  It involves injecting bone cement into fractured vertebrae. Vertebroplasty Back Pain Treatment may Cause Breaks near Fractured Vertebrae

Matritech's NMP22 BladderChek

A report in today’s Journal of the American Medical Association told of an easy in-office urine test that can detect 99 percent of the tumors when used in conjunction with cystoscopy.

The $30 in-office urine test called the NMP22 BladderChek® manufactured by Matritech, who also funded the study at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, looked at how accurate it was in the diagnosis of bladder cancer.  The urine test is non-invasive compared with the cystoscopy which is a flexible scope to see inside the urethra and bladder.  The cystoscopy by itself detects the bladder cancer 91 percent of the time, but when used with the urine test it is 99 percent accurate in diagnosis.  Bladder Cancer detection with a new easy in-office Urine Test

Viagra May Help Prevent and Treat Heart Disease and Failure

Viagra May Help Prevent and Treat Heart Disease and Failure

Viagra

Viagra relieves stress on the heart caused by excess blood and force used to pump it in the body.  In a study conducted by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and its Heart Institute, the duress on the heart was cause adrenaline-like chemical.

Sildenafil citrate (Viagra) has widely been prescribed for erectile dysfunction.  Dr. David Kass, MD of John Hopkins found that Viagra may help treat and prevent heart failure due to stress.  Dr. Kass has found that “Sildenafil effectively puts a ‘brake’ on chemical stimulation of the heart.”

According Kass, Viagra blunts the strengthening heartbeat caused by chemically induced stress, thereby lessening the excess amount of blood and force used to pump it to the body. Viagra May Help Prevent and Treat Heart Disease and Failure

Heart Failure Patients with Sleep Apnea Benefit by Drug Acetazolamide

Heart Failure Patients with Sleep Apnea Benefit by Drug Acetazolamide

Heart

Researchers have found that heart failure patients with sleep apnea who take a single dose of acetazolamide before going to bed exhibit less sleep apnea, improved blood oxygen levels and fewer daytime symptoms of sleepiness.  Acetazolamide is a mild diuretic and respiratory stimulant.

This is important because many heart failure patients suffer from sleep apnea or have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.  Earlier studies have shown a link between the two.  Sleep apnea is a condition where the sleeper stops breathing several times an hour while asleep.

There are two types of sleep apnea; central and obstructive.  Younger patients usually suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) while central sleep apnea (CSA) usually occurs as we age.  Recent research indicates CSA is caused by loss of brain stem cells.  Almost all people with sleep apnea are unaware that they have the condition because it occurs while they are asleep.  Heart Failure Patients with Sleep Apnea Benefit by Drug Acetazolamide

New Gene Discovery may lead to Treatment for GBM Brain Cancer

Dr. Habib

Research published today in the journal Cancer Research describes a gene EGFRvIII that generates a unique pattern of signaling.  This is a distinct gene that that causes a specific brain cancer to grow and multiply.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a cancer of the supportive tissue of the brain and accounts for 60 percent of brain tumors in adults over the age of 50 years.  The team at UT Southwestern Medical Center discovered the cell-signaling mechanism instrumental in the most common brain cancer in adults.

Researchers already knew that tumor cells proliferate out of control by a mechanism characterized by an abnormally high number of copies of the epidermal growth factor receptor gene (EGFR). New Gene Discovery may lead to Treatment for GBM Brain Cancer

Lipodrene

The FDA was requested by the U.S. Attorney’s Office from Pennsylvania for assistance in seizing ATF Fitness Products, Inc.’s Lipodrene inventory.  The dietary supplement contains ephedrine alkaloids and is harmful to the heart.

The U.S. Marshalls were sent to the company headquarters in Oakmont, Pennsylvania to stop the distribution of the Lipodrene by seizing five boxes worth approximately $16,000.

Each daily dose of Lipodrene contains 50 mg of ephedrine alkaloids.  On April 12th, 2004, the FDA announced that it is prohibiting the distribution of ephedrine alkaloid containing supplements.  The ATF Fitness Products, Inc. was in violation of this rule.  The FDA made this rule because ephedrine alkaloids are stimulants that can pose dangerous effects on the heart.  Studies of ephedrine alkaloids show that it raises blood pressure and will stress the circulatory system which puts a person at a higher risk for having a heart attack or stroke.  Lipodrene Diet Pill supplements contains Ephedrine Alkaloids

Shock Therapy and Antidepressant Drugs Best Options for Depression

Shock Therapy and Antidepressant Drugs Best Options for Depression

Depression and Mind

It appears that antidepressant drugs don’t increase the risk of suicide, and shock treatment may be the most effective therapy for depression, especially if psychotic symptoms include hallucinations.  This is according to research done at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Aberdeen.

Depression is a common condition affecting between 15 and 17 percent of people over their lifetime.  This is how many people are diagnosed with depression, but the real numbers are likely higher.  In fact according to the study only 25 to 50 percent of those affected seek treatment.

The researchers looked at 65,000 children and adults treated for depression over a ten year period starting in 1992.  They found that suicide risk declines after treatment begins with medications such as serotonin Reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).  This is the conclusion reached after five years of analysis and research into depression.  Shock Therapy and Antidepressant Drugs Best Options for Depression

Smoking Increases Risk of Webbed or extra Toes and Fingers – Cosmetic Surgery

Smoking Risks

There is a new reason for pregnant women to quit smoking.  According to a study authored by Dr. Benjamin Chang, of the University of Pennsylvania, smoking during pregnancy will greatly increase the risk of having a baby with toe or finger deformities.

The study included 6.8 million births in the United States during 2001 and 2002. There were 5,171 children with either webbed or missing fingers or toes, and some children with extra toes or fingers, born to women that smoked during their pregnancy.  These mothers did not report other health factors including heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure.

According to Dr. Chang "The results of this study were interesting. We suspected that smoking was a cause of digital anomalies but didn't expect the results to be so dramatic."  Smoking Increases Risk of Webbed or extra Toes and Fingers – Cosmetic Surgery

Dry Skin Treatment for Diabetics

Dry Skin Treatment for Diabetics

Skin MD

Skin problems and diabetes are so closely associated that diabetes is often first diagnosed by dermatologists. Several changes to the skin, including boils, blisters called ‘diabetic bullae’, skin tags, dark skin around the neck and fingers, and dry skin, indicate the possibility of diabetes.

What is diabetes and how does it cause skin problems? Many think diabetes is the result of eating too much sugar. In fact, it is a problem with the immune system. In a healthy body, specialized cells (called beta cells) manufacture insulin in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone responsible for transporting glucose to the cells. The body then burns the glucose, creating carbon dioxide, water and energy. The body cannot maintain a healthy condition without this process. In type one diabetes, the immune system attacks beta cells – mistaking them for invaders. In type two diabetes, insulin is still manufactured, but in quantities below.

Obesity is Separate Risk factor for Death – Weight Control and Diet Very Important

BMI and Heart Disease

According to a new study, excess weight is an independent risk factor by itself for heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.  Cholesterol and high blood pressure have been known risk factors for decades, but even people with normal levels are at risk if they are overweight.

Research done at the Northwestern University tracked 17,643 patients for over three decades and found that those overweight had substantially increased risk of dying of heart disease later in life.  This includes the overweight people that began the study with normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Middle ages people need to watch their weight, not just their cholesterol and blood pressure.  Last year a US government study said that a little excess weight is OK, but being overweight is not.  Obesity is Separate Risk factor for Death – Weight Control and Diet Very Important

Neck Pain Treatments including New Surgery Technique

Neck X-ray

Neck pain is very common and one out of two people will experience it at some point in their lives.  In severe cases surgery may be required to treat a pinched nerve.  The recovery from this procedure can be very difficult.

Dr. Frank Phillips of the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago has begun implanting an artificial disc made of the same metal and plastics used in hip and knee replacements.   Right now the procedure is in the clinical trial stages, but WABC in New York reported that Dennis Kistulinec had the procedure done and does not suffer any more pain.

According to the report Kistulinec is not only back to work, he's back lifting weights just two months after the surgery.  Before the surgery he had difficulty picking up his kids or loading groceries in the car. Neck Pain Treatments including New Surgery Technique

Mysteries of sleep

If you feel groggy in the morning you are not alone.  Researchers at the University of Colorado in Boulder found that sleep causes a loss of cognitive abilities immediately after waking.  Lead author and assistant Professor Kenneth Wright compares the sleep effect to “alcohol intoxication”.

The Colorado researchers call the grogginess “sleep inertia.”   There were eight men and one woman included in the study, with an average age of 29.  For three weeks they all got 8 hours of nightly sleep at home.  Next participants spent a week of sleep in a sleep lab.

All of the participants avoided alcohol, medications, nicotine, recreational drugs, and caffeine.  During the days they spent some of their time adding double-digit numbers together.  Sleep Study shows sleep more Debilitating than Deprivation – like being drunk

Lower Blood Pressure by Eating More Vegetables - Vegetable Protein

Vegetable Proteins

When you think of protein you typically think of meat.  New research indicates that people with a higher intake of vegetable protein have lower blood pressure.  The researchers believe that amino acids found in the vegetable protein play a role.

Other compounds found in vegetables including magnesium may also help lower blood pressure by interacting with amino acids.  According to the researchers “Vegetable protein intake was inversely related to blood pressure. This finding is consistent with recommendations that a diet high in vegetable products be part of healthy lifestyle for prevention of high blood pressure and related diseases.”  Lower Blood Pressure by Eating More Vegetables - Vegetable Protein Better

Blood Pressure monitor

A recent study published in Psychophysiology confirms that mental stress raises blood pressure and also causes negative emotions in the brains regions which cause a physical response to the whole body.

Because of the activity in the cingulated cortex while the person is having mental stress it may cause their blood pressure to rise and this puts the individual at a higher risk for heart disease.  Heart Disease can be caused by Stress

Fish Oil

Researchers are starting a 6 month trial in Norfolk to see if fish oil supplements will improve behavior and learning skills.

Their will be 38 students from Eaton Hall Special School that will participate in this study.  These students are between the ages of 10 years through 16 years old.  They all have either a learning or behavior disability such as Dyslexia, Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD).

The researchers suspect that these children may have a Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency.  By correcting this, they hope to see improvement in learning and behavior in these children.  At any time the parents of these children can stop taking the fish oil supplement.  Special Needs Students start Fish Oil trial

Phonics Breakthrough

It is important to diagnose dyslexia as early as possible.  Dyslexia is neurological in origin and is characterized by difficulties with accurate or fluent word recognition.  Dyslexics may possess poor spelling skills and word-decoding abilities according to the International Dyslexia Association.

Dyslexics may have problems matching word sounds with written symbols.  Doug Worgul of Knight Ridder News service calls the condition “serious and life-altering.  There are some warning signs for early detection.  Kids in grades 1 through 3 may confuse similar letters like b and d or w and m.  They may also mix up sounds that are similar.  They may mix up letters in words.  They may skip or add letters to words.  In stead of spelling stop they may spell pots.

As kids get older the warning signs may continue.  Kids may not be aware of prefixes or suffixes.  They may have trouble with reading comprehension.  Phonics Breakthrough for Treating Dyslexia in Adults

Household dogs

Both breast and lung cancer are the leading causes of cancer death worldwide.  It may be possible to quickly screen people in early stages of the disease using dogs.  It appears dogs have an extraordinary scenting ability for both early and late stage cancers.

According to a study led by Michael McCulloch of the Pine Street Foundation in San Anselmo California, and Tadeusz Jezierski of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding, dogs can detect the cancers with accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) between 88 and 97 percent.

Scientists were first became aware to the idea of using canines for detection when a dog alerted its owner to the presence of a melanoma by constantly sniffing the skin lesion.  The canine olfactory discrimination can identify chemicals that are diluted as low as “parts per trillion”.  Lung and Breast Cancer Detection may benefit by the Use of Dogs

Magnetic Insoles

Scientists reported in this week’s British Medical Journal that magnetic devices including bracelets, insoles, wrist and knee bands, back and neck braces, and pillows and mattresses may not be worth the money.

Professors Leonard Finegold and Bruce Flamm estimate that there is over 1 billion dollars spent globally on these kinds of magnetic devices each year.  They feel that the studies that are currently out on magnet therapy were not well done.  It would be hard to have blind study in proving the effectiveness of the treatment.  They also warn that if there is pain, there could be an underlying major condition that may go left untreated.  Magnet Therapy needs better research to Prove Benefits

High Blood Pressure Linked to Memory Problems Making Treatment Important

Monitor and Control BP

New research has shown that untreated high blood pressure may cause short term memory and verbal skills to decline at a faster rate.  The loss of these cognitive functions increases at a faster rate when hypertension is uncontrolled.

Even with treatment, if the blood pressure is not controlled, cognitive ability will decline with age.  It is estimated that 60 percent of adults over the age of 60 have high blood pressure.

The treatment goal is blood pressure below 140/90 and lower for people with other conditions, such as diabetes and kidney disease.  According to Xangina News high blood pressure goes undetected or inadequately treated, leaving nearly 40 percent of older hypertensive people with continued high readings -- even with treatment.  High Blood Pressure Linked to Memory Problems Making Treatment Important

Serotonin

Nobel Laureate researchers discovered a protein call P11, which they believe acts like an antidepressant.

First reported in Science, Paul Greengard, Ph.D, a Rockefeller University neuroscientist who also received the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine said, "Mice deficient in this protein, called p11, display depression-like behaviors, while those with sufficient amounts behave as if they have been treated with antidepressants."

Greengard and his colleagues discovered that P11 protein is able to help in the regulation of serotonin.  Low levels of serotonin have long been known to cause depression and anxiety.  Depression caused by a lack of P11 Protein

Caffeinated Coffee may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women, according to a new Canadian study.  The researchers examined women with a particular type of cancer associated with a specific gene mutation. The research is especially important for women with a family history of breast cancer.

Looking at women with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations the researchers found that women that drank more coffee had less of a risk of developing breast cancer.  According to the CTV Canadian website, Professor Steven A. Narod at the University of Toronto said “"Those women who drank six or more cups of coffee a day on average had about a 75 per cent reduction in the risk of breast cancer."  The women who drank 4 to 5 cups of coffee per day were able to reduce their risk 25% according to Reuters.  Reuters also claims the risk reduction for 6 or more cups per day was 69%.  Breast Cancer Risk Reduced by Consuming Caffeinated Coffee

HCM Heart Disease May Worsen with a Soy Diet or Supplements Products

HCM Heart Disease

Soy products may worsen a specific heart disease condition, according to researchers at the University of Colorado.  Heart muscles in people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are considerably thicker than those without the disease.  In this study mice that carried the gene mutation associated with HCM disease were subjected to different diets.

The researchers were amazed at the impact diet had on heart function. When the male mice were taken off the soy diets their heart function significantly improved compared to the mice that continued on the diet.  Female mice with HCM did not show any significant change.

Males are more affected by HCM disease than females. The effects to the male mice might have been exceptional because females already had large amounts of estrogen in their bodies. There are estrogen compounds found in soy products. HCM Heart Disease May Worsen with a Soy Diet or Supplements Products

Gene found to help Stop the Spread of Some Cancers

Double Helix

In a recent article published in January 5th issue of Nature, a study showed that a gene is responsible for stopping the spread of some cancers.

The gene is called caspase 8 and it acts as a check point to make sure that skin cells stay with the skin, organ cells stay with the designated organ.  When a violation of a cell occurs it is the job of the caspase 8 to activate integrins which cause the cell to die off.

Childhood neuroblastoma cancer, show that there is a lack of the caspas 8 gene and is an aggressive cancer that occurs in children around the age of 2 years.  The gene is missing or suppressed in 70 percent of children with aggressive neuroblastomas.  The problem with this type of cancer is that it spreads throughout the body quickly and it hard to treat once it is diagnosed.  Gene found to help Stop the Spread of Some Cancers

Type-2 Diabetes Treatment my include Managing an Enzyme

Insulin Molecule

There is a link between high-fat diets and type 2 diabetes, according to researchers at the University of California, San Diego.  In fact they have found a molecular connection between the fat and the disruption of insulin production.

An enzyme called GnT-4a enables the beta cells in the pancreas to monitor blood glucose levels and produce the appropriate amount of insulin.  The study appearing in the December 29th issue of the journal Cell examined how this enzyme is suppressed by a high-fat diet in mice.  The result of the high-fat diet is diabetes.

In the early stages of diabetes patients produce insufficient amounts of insulin resulting in hyperglycemia.  Hyperglycemia is an elevated level of blood glucose in the blood.  The Beta cells overcompensate and produce too much insulin, resulting in diabetes.  Type-2 Diabetes Treatment my include Managing an Enzyme

Walking benefits

A new study indicates that people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) can slow the disease progression and improve their walking ability by walking for exercise at least three times per week.  Sufferers of PAD can suffer leg pain that is caused by decreased blood blow in the arteries.

PAD is caused by blockages to the arteries that supply blood to the legs.  Certain risk factors are associated with this disease including smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. The condition gets more profound as we age.

This study conducted at the Northwestern University in Chicago included 417 women and men.  The researchers found that those who walked three or more times per week had a significantly smaller average decline in walking speed and distance when compared to those that walked only once or twice a week.  PAD Peripheral Artery Disease Progression Slowed by Walking

A new study to be published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that birth control pills can possibly cause women’s sex drive to wane even after they stop taking the pill.

Other studies have reflected that birth control pills can change women’s sexual desires while taking the pill, however this study found that the oral contraceptives change proteins found in blood which might be responsible for the long term damage.

As many as 80 percent on American women born after 1945 have taken birth control pills who could be having this problem.  Other causes of change in women’s sexual desire are from sleep depravation, stress, and alcohol.  It can also be caused by the psychology of a bad relationship.  Study finds that Birth Control Pill can cause sustained loss of Libido

Small Changes Big Results

Ellie Krieger, a registered dietitian visited on CBS’s The Early Show promoting her book “Small Changes, Big Results”.  She offered some great advice to get you started on the diet road to losing weight.

She offered 6 steps to get you a started on the road to losing weight.

Tip 1:  Pick snacks that take time to eat.  Since your brain takes 20 minutes to let you know that you are full, she suggests choosing foods that take time to eat. Krieger suggested eating nuts that need to be cracked to eat, and grapefruits that need to be peeled.

Tip 2:  Plan you portions of food by being “mind-full”.  Instead of eating out of the big bag of chips, measure out a small portion in a bowl and put the big bag away before eating.  This will help to cap off the amount of snack you eat and make it less convenient to overeat. The Best Food Sources for Vitamin D and K in your Diet

The Best Food Sources for Vitamin D and K in your Diet

Eggs are Rich in Vitamin D and K

The importance of Vitamin D has escalated in recent days as our understanding of some of its functions has become clearer.  Extra vitamin D can help prevent cancer, but too much vitamin D may harm kidneys and the liver.  None the less, it is an extremely important vitamin and ranks up there with vitamin C.

Vitamin D is important in maintaining normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood.  Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption thereby helping to maintain strong bones.  Earlier studies have shown people deficient in vitamin D typically have bones that are thin and brittle.  The vitamin will help prevent rickets and osteoporosis.  This important feature of vitamin D is the reason why it is added to milk. By adding this vitamin to milk, the US was able to practically eliminate the childhood disease rickets in the 1930s. The Best Food Sources for Vitamin D and K in your Diet

A team of Georgetown University Hospital studied biological remains and remnants that that showed that dwarfism in ancient Egypt was not seen as a handicap, but as respected individuals in this society.

First reported in the December 27th online American Journal of Medical Genetics, this interesting investigation showed that Egypt morals teachings and wisdom writings commanded respect for dwarfs as well as others with disabilities.  Amenemope who wrote in a book of moral teachings said, “Man is clay and straw, the God is his builder.  The Wise Man should respect people affected by reversal of fortune.”

There are currently 100 medical conditions that we know of today that cause short stature.  The most common cause is called achondroplasia and causes severely shortened limbs.  Around 75% of dwarfs are born from parents of normal height.  Dwarfism not a physical handicap in Ancient Egypt

Increasing Vitamin D Intake may Prevent Common Cancers

Increasing Vitamin D Intake may Prevent Common Cancers

Vitamin D and Cancer

Vitamin D may play a bigger role in preventing colon cancer than fiber.  It appears to be the vitamin to take to fend off breast and ovarian cancers as well.  This is according to a study co-authored by Cedric F. Garland, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

According to Garland, if you are black, older or live in the Northeast there is a good chance you don’t get enough vitamin D.  The vitamin has already been associated with bone health.

Researchers reviewed 63 studies relating vitamin D and cancer.  They found that people with low levels of vitamin D in the blood had higher rates of various common cancers.  Sometimes people that had low levels of vitamin D had a 50% increased risk of cancer.    Increasing Vitamin D Intake may Prevent Common Cancers

Another study shows a link between a high fiber diet and a lower heart disease risk.  The new study went a step further and compared various sources of fiber.  The French research looked at fiber from nuts, fruit, grains and vegetables.

The study led by Denis Lairon, researcher at the French National Health Institute (INSERM) indicates that multiple sources of fiber can benefit the heart in multiple ways.  For instance fiber from whole grains helps lower blood pressure, the body mass index (BMI) and the blood protein called homocysteine.  Homocysteine can be a contributing risk factor for heart disease.

Fruit fiber is associated with lower blood pressure and less abdominal fat according to Reuters Health.  Both homocysteine concentrations and blood pressure may be lowered by eating vegetables.  Multiple Fiber Sources Best to Prevent Heart Disease
