One Third of Diabetes Cases Are Undiagnosed

One Third of Diabetes Cases Are Undiagnosed

Walk 5 days week

The National Institute of Health (NIH) reported that one third of those with diabetes do not realize they have it.  Although the percentage of adults with undiagnosed diabetes has not changed over the years, about 2.8 percent of all US adults have diabetes and don’t know it.

Both the NIH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analyzed national survey data from two periods — 1988 to 1994 and 1999 to 2002.  They say the number of adults over the age of 20 with diabetes has risen from 5.1 percent to 6.5 percent.   One Third of Diabetes Cases Are Undiagnosed

ADHD Drugs Sent 2500 Children to Hospital - Emergency Visits Include Heart Attacks Palpitations and Sudden Death - Symptoms for ADHD

Ritalin

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that more than 2,500 children went to the hospital emergency room in 2004 after taking a stimulant used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  According to the CDC, most were admitted because of an accidental overdose.

About 1 in 4 of these children experienced serious heart or blood pressure events including palpitations, chest pain, or fainting. Regulators are considering stronger warnings on the drugs because of the possible link to sudden death and heart risks.  In some cases, the children accidentally took someone else’s medication, according to Rob Waters of Bloomberg.  ADHD Drugs Sent 2500 Children to Hospital - Emergency Visits Include Heart Attacks Palpitations and Sudden Death - ADHD Symptoms

Overeating Costs Money - Hidden Costs Associated with Gaining Weight

French Fries

Upsizing your meal to mega-size at the fast food restaurants may be inexpensive but there are hidden costs to eating excessively.

A group of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated how much money a single occurrence of overeating costs over the following year.  The study will be published in the June 2006 issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

"When confronted with the overwhelming costs of obesity to society as a whole, people don't always take the statistics personally," said Rachel Close who worked with th professor of nutritional science, Dale Schoeller, as part of her master's thesis. "This is another way to present the costs associated with weight gain, and might help convince people that upsizing a meal is no bargain after all. With obesity projected to rise from the current 30 percent to 40 percent of the American population by 2010, this is an important message."  Overeating Costs Money - Hidden Costs Associated with Gaining Weight

Neutrophils

In 1999 an unexpected event occurred when scientists injected cancer cells into a group of mice; one mouse did not get the cancer.  Even after repeated injections the mouse did not get any type of cancer.  It appears the white blood cells from the mouse surrounded tumors and proceeded to kill them, even in advanced forms of cancer.

Not only did the white blood cells kill the cancer in the original mouse, they were able to kill advanced forms of cancer in ordinary mice after injecting them with the white blood cells.  According to Zheng Cui, M.D, “Even highly aggressive forms of malignancy with extremely large tumors were eradicated."  Cui and his colleagues reported this in the on-line edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Air Fresheners and Cleaning Chemicals could have Health Risks

Mop Bucket

According to a research study from the University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory air fresheners and cleaning chemicals used indoors could be bad for your health.

When used indoors in a small space, commonly used household cleaners and air fresheners emit toxic pollutants, which are sometimes at dangerous levels and could lead to health problems.

The pollutants along with the secondary pollutants that are formed when mixed with the ozone might exceed regulatory guidelines if used in a small room while cleaning a large surface area on a regular basis.  Chronic exposure increases the toxic exposure and the health risks.  Air Fresheners and Cleaning Chemicals could have Health Risks

Lack of Sleep Linked to Weight Gain - Women Who Slept More Less Likely To Become Obese or Fat - Study Hormone and Appetite Possible Cause

Health

Scientists discovered that women who slept 5 hours or less per night weighed more than those who slept 7 hour.  The women who slept 5 hours or les weighed 5.4 pounds more at the beginning of the study than those who slept 7.  Making matters worse, the women gained an additional 1.6 pounds more over the next 10 years.

Lead researcher Sanjay Patel, M.D said “That may not sound like much, but it is an average amount--some women gained much more than that, and even a small difference in weight can increase a person's risk of health problems such as diabetes and hypertension."  Patel is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.  Lack of Sleep Linked to Weight Gain - Women Who Slept More Less Likely To Become Obese or Fat - Study Hormone and Appetite Possible Cause

Cats Increase Risk For Eczema While Dogs Lower Chance - Babies and Children Exposed To Felines May Develop Atopic Dermatitis

Health

Researchers from the University of Arizona say that children exposed to cats soon after birth have an increased risk of developing eczema.  Dogs on the other hand, had a protective effect.  According to Eczema.net, eczema is a general term encompassing various inflamed skin conditions. One of the most common forms of eczema is atopic dermatitis.  The condition is sometime called "atopic eczema".

The study which was presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference on May 21st, involved 486 children who were followed since birth.  The researchers asked the parents how many dogs and cats were in the house at the time of birth.  They then came back a year later to determine which children developed eczema.   Cats Increase Risk For Eczema While Dogs Lower Chance - Babies and Children Exposed To Felines May Develop Atopic Dermatitis

Common NSAID Pain Killers Increase Risk of Heart Failure Hospital Stays - Drugs Commonly Used for Osteo-Arthritis - Tylenol is Not a NSAID

Health

Researchers found that older patients with heart failure that used nonsteroidal anti-inflamatories (NSAIDs) regularly had an increased risk of being admitted to the hospital for heart failure for the first time.  These NSAIDs include ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, indomethacin and meloxicam, and are commonly used to treat arthritis.

After taking into account other factors, heart failure patients between the age of 60 and 84 had a 30 percent increased chance of being admitted to the hospital for heart failure for the first time.  They found that a previous diagnosis of heart failure, obesity, being a smoker, and a history of recent specialist appointments and inpatient stays were all associated with a greater chance of being admitted to hospital for heart failure for the first time. Fusarium keratitis Eye Infection Symptoms - Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc May Be A Cause - CDC Investigating - Discard Immediately

Health

It appears the outbreak of the Fusarium keratitis infection outbreak may be from the used Bausch & Lomb Inc.'s newest lens cleaner, ReNu with MoistureLoc.  The Centers for Disease Control released a report Friday that confirms Bausch & Lomb’s explanation that an ingredient unique to their cleaning solution can inadvertently prevent proper disinfection of contact lenses in instances of poor hygiene.

The CDC reports that out of the 130 confirmed cases, 125 reported wearing contact lenses and 118 were able to identify which contact lens solution(s) they had used during the month before onset of infection.  The CDC says that 64% reported using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc alone, while 12% said they used it with another product.  The report says that only 7% used another unspecified Bausch & Lomb solution, and 18% reported using only products other than MoistureLoc, from various manufacturers.  Fusarium keratitis Eye Infection Symptoms - Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc May Be A Cause - CDC Investigating - Discard Immediately

Avian Flu Pandemic

Marlton, N.J. - Although the jury is still out on the likelihood and potential severity of an outbreak of bird flu among humans in the United States, some companies and states are playing it safe now in the event the disease migrates to our country sooner than later.

IBM announced on May 15 a new cooperative effort with health authorities to use technology it developed to stem the spread of bird flu and other infectious diseases. As part of the effort, IBM will donate software that enables health experts in different countries to share data, track the geographic spread of diseases, and predict how the bird flu virus might mutate into a form that is deadlier to people, according to the San Jose Mercury News.  Bird Flu Threat Spurs Companies and States to Prepare For Avian H5N1 Influenza Pandemic

Stomach Ulcers - Cayenne Peppers may help Improve Condition

Cayenne Peppers

If you suffer from a peptic or duodenal ulcer, the last thing you might consider taking is hot Cayenne Pepper. This goes against everything you've ever heard about what aggravates an ulcer, the facts are that most "spicy" foods do just the opposite.

Capsicum (Cayenne Pepper) can reduce pain which serves as a local anesthetic to ulcerated tissue in the stomach and can even help to control bleeding in the stomach. Some individuals may be bothered by eating "Red Pepper" or spicy foods, these foods do not cause the formation of gastric ulcers in normal people. An interesting note is that people suffering from ulcers usually avoid Cayenne Pepper, in fact those people may actually benefit from its therapeutic action. Medicare Part D Deadline May Be Waived - How to Choose A Plan and Calculate the Late Enrollment Penalty

Medicare Card

The Senate may move the Medicare Part D enrollment deadline for those who have not already signed up.  Technically, the senate is considering a waiver.  Charles Grassley, the Senate Finance Chairman, has introduced a $1.7 billion measure to suspend a penalty for elderly Americans who missed yesterday's deadline for enrolling in the new Medicare drug benefit.

For those who have not enrolled, the penalty could add a number of dollars to each month’s premium.  The penalty amounts to 1 percent of the state average (some experts say it is the national average and others believe it could be the regional average) premium for each month you delay enrollment after May of this year.  Here is an example:  If you wait until 2011 to sign-up, you will be penalized for 66 months.  If the state (or region) average premium is $40 per month at the time you enroll in 2011, and you choose a plan that costs $30 per month, your monthly premium will be $30 plus $26.80.  Medicare Part D Deadline May Be Waived - How to Choose A Plan and Calculate the Late Enrollment Penalty

Addiction to Tanning Physiological Not Just Mental - Tanners Becoming Younger - Good Morning America Segment Highlights Dangers

Health

Researchers have discovered that tanning can be addictive, just like drugs and alcohol.  Last year scientists compared frequent tanners and found that tanners that were given the drug naltrexone had withdraw symptoms, but those who got the drug did.  Naltexone blocks a narcotic-like substance produced in the skin during tanning.

According to Daniel DeNoon of WebMD, the researchers found that a 50-milligram dose of naltrexone could cause physiological withdrawal: nausea, dizziness, and shaking.  This prompted the researchers to stop the study early.  Mandeep Kaur, MD said "In the beginning, we gave standard 50-milligram doses of naltrexone to frequent tanners.  All of them developed symptoms consistent with <withdraw>. So we had to stop that study."  Kaur is a dermatologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.  Addiction to Tanning Physiological Not Just Mental - Tanners Becoming Younger - Good Morning America Segment Highlights Dangers

Nurses' Health Study links Estrogen use to Breast Cancer

HRT Effects

The Nurses' Health Study (NHS) is an ongoing longterm cohort study examining the health of nurses compared to the general population. It is an observational study that, while interesting, falls short of the precision of a randomized clinical trial. The study, nevertheless, is important because it has prompted further research.

In the NHS, HRT use (either estrogen alone or estrogen/progestin) has been examined among these women for its potential effects on disease outcomes. As many know, it found lower rates of heart disease among hormone users and higher rates of breast cancer.

While these findings are informative, they haven't been paralleled (COMPLETELY) in clinical trials. For example, NHS found that women who initiated HRT at ANY AGE reduced their risk of heart disease. Nurses' Health Study links Estrogen use to Breast Cancer

5 Ways to Rebuild Confidence in Kids with ADHD

Health

Children with ADHD are often misunderstood and in trouble even though they are just “being themselves.”  This experience often leads to a loss of self-confidence.  Imagine a child with ADHD trying to keep his brain activated during a boring activity by wiggling around or making noises.  He doesn’t mean to be disruptive, but boy does he when he gets in trouble! “That boy is trouble!”

Or imagine a girl who is so busy day dreaming to keep her brain activated that she has not heard the teacher’s instructions or that she has forgotten to turn in her assignment. “That girl is such a space cadet!”  These messages may not be spoken aloud, and yet to our children they come through loud and clear.  How can we as parents re-build our children’s self-confidence? Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Medications may have dangerous interactions when taken with Grapefruit Juice

Grapefruit

Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that some prescription drugs can possibly cause dangerous interactions when taken with grapefruit juice.

It was originally believed that flavonoids from the grapefruit juice caused the interactions; however the researchers believe that it is because of a chemical called furanocoumarins that is found in the grapefruit which contributes to the problem.

Melatonin Sleeping Pills Effective For Jet Lag – Sleep Aid Taken Orally 30 Minutes Before Episode Helps Insomnia and Sleep Efficiency

Melatonin Pills

Researchers in the US have found that the sleep-aid melatonin, taken orally during non-typical sleep times, significantly improves an individual's ability to sleep.  Melatonin is a hormone that is produced naturally by the body at night or in darkness which helps the brain determine day and night.  This helps regulate the circadian timing.

Exposing the eye to light will inhibit the hormone.  Previous research on the subject has been mixed, according to researchers.  The new study, conducted at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, involved 36 participants (21 men and 15 women), between the ages of 18 and 30 with no significant past or current medical disorders, sleep disorders, or psychological disorders.  Melatonin Sleeping Pills Effective For Jet Lag – Sleep Aid Taken Orally 30 Minutes Before Episode Helps Insomnia and Sleep Efficiency

Dr. Oz’s 90 Day Plan showed Oprah and viewers how to get Younger and Healthier

You: The Owner's Manual Book by Dr. OZ and Dr. Roizen

Oprah Winfrey had Dr. Oz on her show to share how to eat better to get healthier and younger.  Some was diet and exercise advice.  The authors Michael F. Roizen, Mehmet Oz M.D., shared some of the information from their book called, “YOU: The Owner's Manual: An Insider's Guide to the Body that Will Make You Healthier and Younger.”

Another book by Michael F. Roizen is called “The RealAge Makeover: Take Years off Your Looks and Add Them to Your Life.”

One of the secrets is to understand what you are eating.  Look at the ingredients on the package label.  If sugar or high fructose corn syrup is top on the list of ingredients it is not a good food choice.  Dr. Oz recommends foods that have sugar in them also contain fiber or complex carbohydrates.  Mixing the sugar with a complex carbohydrate will slow the absorption of the sugar into the system and help to control an insulin rise and rapid drop following.  Dr. Oz’s 90 Day Plan showed Oprah and viewers how to get Younger and Healthier

Migraine Headaches Causes and Treatments - Controlling Triggers

Health

The worst feeling in the world is when you get a migraine.  Many chronic migraines are a symptom of depression. In this case, the body constantly feels tired and the headaches are to inform the person that they aren’t well and that they need to slow down a bit.  In cases like these, if you are able to reduce your stress levels or reduce the pace of your daily life then the migraines will be become less frequent.

First what is a migraine?  A migraine is different than a headache.  A headache is slight discomfort and pressure that fills the cranium. A migraine is when you are in so much pain that you cannot function. It disrupts your entire life.  It could be caused by many factors that include a nervous system glitch. All Laser Equipment

The Mayo Clinic reports that femtosecond (bladeless) and mechanical microkeratome LASIK surgeries produce equal results, using a variety of eye health measurements.  LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) involves treating nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism by reshaping the eye's cornea to alter the way the eye refracts light.  The older traditional method involves using a blade to create a flap, and then removing a defined amount of corneal tissue by an excimer laser.  Doctors then replace the flap. Active Family

Obesity has been on the rise for both adults and children in the United States.  Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) believes that the currents statistics are too low and the more people are obese than previously thought.  The reason these researchers believe that the data is incorrect is because of the telephone surveys used to collect the information.  Telephone survey data showed that people may have underestimated their weight and height.  The report will be printed in the May issue of the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

The data collected for the national and state level of obesity comes from two different sources.  The first source is from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the other is the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).  Obesity – Statistics Underestimated more Americans are Overweight and Obese

Male Birth Control Pills Reversible After Few Months - Men's Contraceptive Study Concerning Hormone Treatment to Prevent Sperm Production

Sperm

Male contraceptive pills have been available for some time now and there is now evidence that sperm recovery can be obtained within three or four months.  Research published in this weeks journal The Lancet, highlight the fact that male hormone treatment for contraception can be reversed in just a few months.

This is especially good news for men who are sexually active and do not want children.  Other male contraceptive methods are either not sufficiently reliable or not easily reversible.  In a similar way to ovulation suppression by hormone treatment in women, sperm production can be fully inhibited by androgen or androgen-progestagen treatment combinations in men. With such hormone treatment, azoospermia (i.e. no sperm in ejaculate) or severe oligozoospermia (or less than 3 million sperm per milliliter of semen), which is sufficient for contraception. Male Birth Control Pills Reversible After Few Months - Men's Contraceptive Study Concerning Hormone Treatment to Prevent Sperm Production

Ear

Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital continue studies on hearing loss and found that gene knockout affects different areas of the inner ear.  The researcher’s goal is to be able to regenerate the inner ear’s hair cells that are responsible for converting sound into nerve impulses that is then transmitted to the brain.

The current research study is being reported in the upcoming issue of Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences and will also be published online as well.  The researchers focused on the suppression of retinoblastoma (Rb) protein.  They discovered that changing the protein had different effects in the inner ear.  Hearing Loss – Researchers study method to regenerate Inner Ear Damage

New Parkinson's Disease Research - Compare Genetic Cases with Environmental - Symptoms and Treatments With Drugs

Health

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic compared patients with Parkinson’s disease which stems from genetic causes with patients who have no known cause.  These cases that have no known genetic cause make up 98% of all Parkinson’s cases.  They label these cases “sporadic”.  Parkinson’s disease affects approximately 1 million Americans causing tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement and instability.

They found that the disease affects men twice as often as women.  The researchers speculate that this may be because women have a “protective effect” or mechanism.  For example, the hormone estrogen may act to protect women.  New Parkinson's Disease Research - Compare Genetic Cases with Environmental - Symptoms and Treatments With Drugs

Pregnancy - Vitamins C and E Don’t Prevent Birth Complications – Symptoms - Preeclampsia Not Avoided by Large Doses of Antioxidants

Vitamins

Large doses of vitamins C and E won’t prevent preeclampsia, according to research in the April 27th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.  Preeclampsia is a relatively common but potentially dangerous pregnancy complication, which affects 5-8% of all pregnancies.

Preeclampsia occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and is characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine.  Symptoms include swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision, but according to the Preeclampsia Foundation, some women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms.

The study included 1,877 Australian women pregnant for the first time.  The researchers excluded women who were pregnant with multiple fetuses and women with chronic health conditions, such as kidney disease and high blood pressure. They found that the addition of these vitamins did not prevent preeclampsia or even lower the risk of complications for the infant.  Pregnancy - Vitamins C and E Don’t Prevent Birth Complications – Symptoms - Preeclampsia Not Avoided by Large Doses of Antioxidants

Adult ADHD: The Magic Egg Timer Trick

Adult ADHD: The Magic Egg Timer Trick

Health

For people with Adult ADHD, focusing long enough to get even a small task done--if it is boring--can seem almost impossible! Here’s what I do when I have to focus on something that I really don't like to do, especially sitting at my desk.

Adult ADHD makes it hard to try to sit still and do something--but now and then you just have to. Here's a couple tricks I've learned to get boring tasks done.

First, when I come in and get started, I've trained myself to immediately have a certain pattern of activity that happens. My brain automatically associates that pattern of activity with, "Now we're going to sit down and do something."

It’s simply a habit. If you have Adult ADHD try this sometime you have to do paperwork or organize something:  Adult ADHD: The Magic Egg Timer Trick

Weight Loss Hormone may help Obese Eat less and Move More

Weight Loss Hormone may help Obese Eat less and Move More

Aerobic Exercise Class

Researchers found that supplementing a hormone found in the gut can help stall an appetite and at the same time increase activity.  This study was first pre-published in the online version of the International Journal of Obesity.

The hormone is called oxyntomodulin.  Professor Steve Bloom, from Imperial College London, who led the research, said: "The discovery that this hormone has a double effect, increasing energy expenditure as well as reducing food intake, could be of huge importance. When most people diet, this produces a reduction in activity, which is probably an adaptive trait to conserve energy during times of famine. However this does make it especially difficult for obese individuals trying to lose weight. In contrast oxyntomodulin decreases calorific intake, but actually increases energy expenditure, making it an ideal intervention for the obese."  Weight Loss Hormone may help Obese Eat less and Move More

Weight Loss - Lack of Sleep Link - Hormone Imbalance Due to Deprivation - Good Morning America Program Suggests Diet May Not Be Enough

Health

One reason people have a hard time losing weight could be because they don’t get enough sleep.  According to Dr. Eve Van Cauter, of the University of Chicago, sleep deprivation reduced the production of the growth hormone that helps control the body's proportion of muscle to fat.

The ABC News Program Good Morning America (GMA) ran a story that supports the idea that lack of sleep can cause weight gain.  Medical contributor, Dr. David Katz spotlighted a study that indicates that sleeping fewer than eight hours a night boosts our levels of ghrelin, a hormone that makes us feel hungry, while suppressing another hormone, leptin, that makes us feel full.  Katz said that "There's convincing evidence that a good night's sleep really can pay dividends in terms of weight control."  Weight Loss - Lack of Sleep Link - Hormone Imbalance Due to Deprivation - Good Morning America Program Suggests Diet May Not Be Enough

Researchers have determined that Evista (raloxifene HCL) can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by about half.  The Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR) found that Evista, an osteoporosis drug, works as well as the older drug used to treat cancer, tamoxifen, in reducing the risk of breast cancer in high-risk women, but with fewer dangerous side effects.

Evista is marketed by Eli Lilly for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.  The new breast cancer protection findings were announced by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP).  Steven Paul, M.D., executive vice president of science and technology, Lilly said “NSABP's STAR study represents an important milestone in cancer research." Fruits and Vegetables

A study of Americans that ate a Mediterranean diet had a reduced risk for getting Alzheimer’s disease in their old age.  The report was first published in the April issue of the Annals of Neurology.

According to Oldway’s website they depict the Mediterranean diet along with other food pyramids based on cultures.  A Mediterranean diet includes lots of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, rice, pasta, beans, legumes and nuts are eaten on a daily basis.  Olive oil and other plant oils along with cheese and yogurt are all part of a daily eating plan.  Fish, poultry, eggs, and sweets are on a weekly basis, with red meat being eaten on a monthly basis.  Alzheimer’s disease – Mediterranean Diet reduces risk of getting Alzheimer’s

Stress Hormones Cause Depression - New Drugs May Target Cortisol to Prevent Chronic Anxious Behavior and Mood Disorders

Anxiety and Stress

Researchers believe that long term exposure to stress causes depression. Many medical professionals have suspected this, but lacked the evidence. Neuroscientists at Harvard Medical School, and its affiliate Mclean Hospital, have shown that long-term exposure to a stress hormone in mice directly resulted in the anxiety that often comes with depression.

Researchers already knew that people with depression had high levels of the human stress hormone, cortisol, but were not sure if it was a cause or effect.  They now believe that long-term exposure to cortisol actually contributes to the symptoms of depression. Lafayette Skinfold Caliper

Researchers found that people that are either overweight or obese in their 40’s have a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life.  The research was first presented at the American Academy of Neurology 58th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California that was held the beginning of this month.

This large scale study followed 9,000 people for a period of 30 years.  The study measured skin fold thickness of the back of the upper arm and also under the shoulder on the back.

The people that had the higher skinfold measurements in their 40’s had a higher chance for developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to those that had the smallest measurements.  The people that had the highest skinfold measurement of the back were three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s compared to those who had the smallest measurement of the back.  The people that had the largest skinfold measurement of the arm were 2 ½ times more likely to have Alzheimer’s disease later on compared to those that had the smallest arm skin fold measurement.  Alzheimer’s disease – Risk Increases in Overweight and Obese People in their 40’s

Asthma Treatment

London researchers say that the antibiotic, telithromycin, can hasten the recovery time of patients who have had asthma attacks by three days, as will reduce symptoms and improving lung function.  The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrated that this antibiotic can be used effectively to treat acute asthma attacks.

The antibiotic is not currently used for treating asthma.  Telithromycin is made by the world’s third largest pharmaceutical company, sanofi-aventis.  The study, part of the TELICAST (TELIthromycin, Chlamydophila and ASThma) study, investigated 278 patients at 70 centers around the world. Nutrition – Why Consumers buy Mega-Brand Name Food Even when they know it’s not Nutritious

Nutrition – Why Consumers by Mega-Brand Name Food Even when they know it’s not Nutritious

Grocery Store

Why do we still buy big brand name foods that we know are bad for us?  According to James Tillotson, PhD, MBA, professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University said the reason why big brand names survive, “mega-brands maintain their strong grip on our diet because consumers, food companies, and supermarkets are intertwined in a symbiotic relationship that yields great benefits for all three.”

Tillotson has a two-part series in his Business and Nutrition column in Nutrition Today who looks at the brand name products and refers to them as “fortress brands” because they are hard for competitors to take their market share. Link Between Prostate Cancer and High Cholesterol - Testosterone and Goldstones Are Both Synthesized from Cholesterol - Italian Research

Cholesterol Test

Italian researchers say they have found a link between high cholesterol and prostate cancer.  According to the co-author, Dr. Cristina Bosetti, “Androgens – hormones that have a role in prostate tissue and cancer – are synthesised from cholesterol, suggesting a possible biological relationship between high cholesterol and prostate cancer. Gallstones are related to high cholesterol levels as well and are often composed of cholesterol. So, the direct relationship we found between gallstones and prostate cancer, while it was not statistically significant, suggests a similar biological mechanism may explain the link."  Androgens are male sex hormones, like testosterone.   Link Between Prostate Cancer and High Cholesterol - Testosterone and Goldstones Are Both Synthesized from Cholesterol - Italian Research

Estrogen and Heart Disease - Women's Health Initiative - Hormone Replacement Therapy Potential Risks and Benefits - HRT

WHI

This new analysis of the Women's Health Initiative Estrogen-Alone trial is being touted much too strongly by the media, Wyeth, and certain physicians. They have looked at the data, run with it, and made conclusions, which is VERY irresponsible at this point in time.

The analysis showed an insignificant "trend" toward heart disease prevention among women in their 50s, the group of women at lowest risk for heart disease. There were no trends seen for older women. The problem with interpreting these results as "beneficial" is that the number of younger women was too few to draw any conclusions.  Estrogen and Heart Disease - Women's Health Initiative - Hormone Replacement Therapy Potential Risks and Benefits - HRT

Hormone Replacement Therapy May Not Increase Breast Cancer Risk - Estrogen Pills (HRT) can Cause Strokes Blood Clots and Dementia

Hormone Replacement Therapy May Not Increase Breast Cancer Risk - Estrogen Pills (HRT) can Cause Strokes Blood Clots and Dementia

Estrogen

The latest data from Women's Health Initiative (WHI) shows that estrogen alone used for 7 years or less in women with hysterectomy does not increase the risk (or perhaps the detection) of breast cancer in general. A non-significant trend towards fewer cases was noted. Obviously if this were the only finding it would be good news but it's lot more confusing than that. Nevertheless, Wyeth, the maker of Premarin, and a few of its designated, well paid mouthpieces are at it again, saying estrogen is protective.

They've got Hugh Taylor from Yale and Wolf Utian of the North American Menopause Society (a veteran HRT proponent) touting these results with great enthusiasm. Highly irresponsible, for several reasons!! - The "reduced risk" was not significant and the cancers of the women on estrogen were larger and involved lymph nodes. Plus the women on estrogen required additional testing or biopsies, and there appeared to be an INCREASED RISK of breast cancer for those women with risk factors.  Hormone Replacement Therapy May Not Increase Breast Cancer Risk - Estrogen Pills (HRT) can Cause Strokes Blood Clots and Dementia

Bosch and Lomb Product Linked Fusarium Keratitis Eye Infections - Fungal Symptoms and Treatments - No Recall Yet on ReNu with MoistureLoc

Eye Infection

Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc has been pulled from the shelves of Walgreen’s, Rite Aid and Wal-Mart after the news reported that this may be the source of the recent eye fungus outbreak.  The eye infections were first spotted in China, but have now spread to 17 states in the US.

Although Bausch and Lomb has not issued a recall, they have suspended shipments of the popular cleaning solution.  Their stock dropped more yesterday than anytime in last five years, even though the fungus infection is considered rare.  Health care professionals warn that as the weather warms up there may be more fungal infections. Polymersome

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have effectively used nano-particles to kill breast cancer tumors along with chemotherapeutics. These tiny particles contain a hollow shell that can be filled with chemicals used to kill tumors.  The two potent chemicals used were paclitaxel, the leading cancer drug known by brand names such as Taxol, and doxorubicin.  This technique allowed the particles to move directly to the tumors implanted in mice.
