Date Archived: February 25th 2006Obesity is Separate Risk factor for Death – Weight Control and Diet Very Important
According to a new study, excess weight is an independent risk factor by itself for heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. Cholesterol and high blood pressure have been known risk factors for decades, but even people with normal levels are at risk if they are overweight. Research done at the Northwestern University tracked 17,643 patients for over three decades and found that those overweight had substantially increased risk of dying of heart disease later in life. This includes the overweight people that began the study with normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Middle ages people need to watch their weight, not just their cholesterol and blood pressure. Last year a US government study said that a little excess weight is OK, but being overweight is not. Obesity is Separate Risk factor for Death – Weight Control and Diet Very Important Lower Blood Pressure by Eating More Vegetables - Vegetable Protein Better
When you think of protein you typically think of meat. New research indicates that people with a higher intake of vegetable protein have lower blood pressure. The researchers believe that amino acids found in the vegetable protein play a role. Other compounds found in vegetables including magnesium may also help lower blood pressure by interacting with amino acids. According to the researchers “Vegetable protein intake was inversely related to blood pressure. This finding is consistent with recommendations that a diet high in vegetable products be part of healthy lifestyle for prevention of high blood pressure and related diseases.” Lower Blood Pressure by Eating More Vegetables - Vegetable Protein Better Special Needs Students start Fish Oil trial
Researchers are starting a 6 month trial in Norfolk to see if fish oil supplements will improve behavior and learning skills. Their will be 38 students from Eaton Hall Special School that will participate in this study. These students are between the ages of 10 years through 16 years old. They all have either a learning or behavior disability such as Dyslexia, Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD). The researchers suspect that these children may have a Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency. By correcting this, they hope to see improvement in learning and behavior in these children. At any time the parents of these children can stop taking the fish oil supplement. Special Needs Students start Fish Oil trial Can You Catch the Bird Flu by eating Chickens Turkeys or other Birds
With the recent bird flu outbreak in Turkey involving the deaths of three children, many people are looking for ways to protect themselves and their family. Reports from Turkey tests speculate that 14-year-old Mehmet Ali Kocyigit and his sisters Fatma, 15, and Hulya, 11, all died of the H5N1 bird flu. This is according to a story from the Guardian website. The World Health Organization (WHO) says there are a total of four cases confirmed by laboratory tests. Two of the cases were fatal, according to a press release issued on January 7th. The WHO says one of the sibling’s cause of death has not been confirmed yet, but some experts suspect it is likely the H5N1 virus. Can You Catch the Bird Flu by eating Chickens Turkeys or other Birds Fusion Workout, Home Gyms and Exercise Videos expected to be Popular for 2006
Home gyms are expected to be very popular this year. The AB Lounge and Bowflex have both started major advertising campaigns. Many busy people do not have the time to hit the gym after a long day of work. Other concerns pop-up when considering going to the gym. According to the News in Science Website “Past outbreaks of the antibiotic-resistant skin infection have been seen in groups such as athletes and intravenous drug users - people who live in close quarters and share things like gym equipment and towels, or needles.” Hillary Swank developed a serious drug resistant staphylococcus cellulitis infection on her foot while filming Million Dollar Baby. In Swank's case, it started with a blister on her foot, resulting in "red marks going up my leg," and was extremely painful, she told Mike Wallace on CBS's 60 Minutes. In her quest for fitness, she picked the painful illness up (and possible life threatening) off the floor of a gym. Fusion Workout, Home Gyms and Exercise Videos expected to be Popular for 2006 Breast Cancer Risk Reduced by Consuming Caffeinated Coffee
Caffeinated Coffee may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women, according to a new Canadian study. The researchers examined women with a particular type of cancer associated with a specific gene mutation. The research is especially important for women with a family history of breast cancer. Looking at women with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations the researchers found that women that drank more coffee had less of a risk of developing breast cancer. According to the CTV Canadian website, Professor Steven A. Narod at the University of Toronto said “"Those women who drank six or more cups of coffee a day on average had about a 75 per cent reduction in the risk of breast cancer." The women who drank 4 to 5 cups of coffee per day were able to reduce their risk 25% according to Reuters. Reuters also claims the risk reduction for 6 or more cups per day was 69%. Breast Cancer Risk Reduced by Consuming Caffeinated CoffeeHCM Heart Disease May Worsen with a Soy Diet or Supplements Products
Soy products may worsen a specific heart disease condition, according to researchers at the University of Colorado. Heart muscles in people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are considerably thicker than those without the disease. In this study mice that carried the gene mutation associated with HCM disease were subjected to different diets. The researchers were amazed at the impact diet had on heart function. When the male mice were taken off the soy diets their heart function significantly improved compared to the mice that continued on the diet. Female mice with HCM did not show any significant change. Males are more affected by HCM disease than females. The effects to the male mice might have been exceptional because females already had large amounts of estrogen in their bodies. There are estrogen compounds found in soy products. HCM Heart Disease May Worsen with a Soy Diet or Supplements Products PAD Peripheral Artery Disease Progression Slowed by Walking
A new study indicates that people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) can slow the disease progression and improve their walking ability by walking for exercise at least three times per week. Sufferers of PAD can suffer leg pain that is caused by decreased blood blow in the arteries. PAD is caused by blockages to the arteries that supply blood to the legs. Certain risk factors are associated with this disease including smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. The condition gets more profound as we age. This study conducted at the Northwestern University in Chicago included 417 women and men. The researchers found that those who walked three or more times per week had a significantly smaller average decline in walking speed and distance when compared to those that walked only once or twice a week. PAD Peripheral Artery Disease Progression Slowed by Walking Tips for Losing Weight from author of “Small Changes, Big Results”
Ellie Krieger, a registered dietitian visited on CBS’s The Early Show promoting her book “Small Changes, Big Results”. She offered some great advice to get you started on the diet road to losing weight. She offered 6 steps to get you a started on the road to losing weight. Tip 1: Pick snacks that take time to eat. Since your brain takes 20 minutes to let you know that you are full, she suggests choosing foods that take time to eat. Krieger suggested eating nuts that need to be cracked to eat, and grapefruits that need to be peeled. Tip 2: Plan you portions of food by being “mind-full”. Instead of eating out of the big bag of chips, measure out a small portion in a bowl and put the big bag away before eating. This will help to cap off the amount of snack you eat and make it less convenient to overeat. Tips for Losing Weight from author of “Small Changes, Big Results” The Best Food Sources for Vitamin D and K in your Diet
The importance of Vitamin D has escalated in recent days as our understanding of some of its functions has become clearer. Extra vitamin D can help prevent cancer, but too much vitamin D may harm kidneys and the liver. None the less, it is an extremely important vitamin and ranks up there with vitamin C. Vitamin D is important in maintaining normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption thereby helping to maintain strong bones. Earlier studies have shown people deficient in vitamin D typically have bones that are thin and brittle. The vitamin will help prevent rickets and osteoporosis. This important feature of vitamin D is the reason why it is added to milk. By adding this vitamin to milk, the US was able to practically eliminate the childhood disease rickets in the 1930s. The Best Food Sources for Vitamin D and K in your Diet Fish Oil alternative treatment to Ritalin for ADHD
A study currently being done at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, is having ADHD children putting fish oil spread on bread. A total of 90 children aged 8 – 13 diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) were selected for this study. A total of 30 of these children were told to eat a chocolate fish oil spread on bread each day. After a 3 month time period, 20 out of 30 of these children showed significant improvement when a psychological re-evaluation was performed. The rest of the children did not have any treatment. Although the results are exciting the researchers caution that this is preliminary findings and more research will be needed. Another study that reinforces fish oil as an alternative treatment to ADHD was an extensive study of children in Durham, U.K. The study covered school age children that were behind a year from their peers, many had ADHD. The results showed dramatic improvements in speech, behavior, and in reading. The fatty acid supplements were a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 and are essential for the body to function well. Fish Oil alternative treatment to Ritalin for ADHD Vitamins C E Beta Carotene and Zinc help Prevent Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Research indicates that eating a diet rich in beta carotene, vitamins C and E, and zinc will substantially reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This is one of the leading causes of blindness in older people. Your mother may have been right: Eating carrots will help your eyesight. People who eat high levels of vitamin E and zinc in their diet reduced their risk of AMD by 10%. By adding beta carotene (found in carrots) and vitamin C people are able to reduce the risk by 35%. The Netherlands researchers studied the diets of 4,170 people for as long as 14 years. The study found that eating the food rather than taking supplements was more effective. These foods include citrus fruits, broccoli, spinach, carrots, eggs, nuts, vegetable oil and whole grains, according to NPR. Vitamins C E Beta Carotene and Zinc help Prevent Macular Degeneration (AMD) Two Grapefruit Daily Helps Gum Disease - Benefits of Vitamin C
If you can get past the strong taste of grapefruit you may benefit by eating them, according to a study published in the British Dental Journal. Researchers at the Friedrich Schiller University in Germany found that the antioxidant effect of just two grapefruit per day appears to increase healing of bleeding gums. Now add this to the weight loss benefits of grapefruit and we have multiple benefits to the sour or sweet fruit. Usually the lighter grapefruit is sour and the more red the fruit is, the sweeter. The researchers did not indicate which is better. There were 58 people involved in the study of which there were both smokers and non-smokers. They were divided in to two groups. The first group ate two grapefruit per day and the other did not. Two Grapefruit Daily Helps Gum Disease - Benefits of Vitamin C Increasing Vitamin D Intake may Prevent Common Cancers
Vitamin D may play a bigger role in preventing colon cancer than fiber. It appears to be the vitamin to take to fend off breast and ovarian cancers as well. This is according to a study co-authored by Cedric F. Garland, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego. According to Garland, if you are black, older or live in the Northeast there is a good chance you don’t get enough vitamin D. The vitamin has already been associated with bone health. Researchers reviewed 63 studies relating vitamin D and cancer. They found that people with low levels of vitamin D in the blood had higher rates of various common cancers. Sometimes people that had low levels of vitamin D had a 50% increased risk of cancer. Increasing Vitamin D Intake may Prevent Common Cancers Multiple Fiber Sources Best to Prevent Heart Disease
Another study shows a link between a high fiber diet and a lower heart disease risk. The new study went a step further and compared various sources of fiber. The French research looked at fiber from nuts, fruit, grains and vegetables. The study led by Denis Lairon, researcher at the French National Health Institute (INSERM) indicates that multiple sources of fiber can benefit the heart in multiple ways. For instance fiber from whole grains helps lower blood pressure, the body mass index (BMI) and the blood protein called homocysteine. Homocysteine can be a contributing risk factor for heart disease. Fruit fiber is associated with lower blood pressure and less abdominal fat according to Reuters Health. Both homocysteine concentrations and blood pressure may be lowered by eating vegetables. Multiple Fiber Sources Best to Prevent Heart Disease High Blood Pressure Medicine - Potassium and Heart Arrhythmias
It is important to monitor your blood pressure. It is called the silent killer for a reason. Most people don’t realize they have it. The good news is there are treatments for hypertension (high blood pressure), and these treatments may save your life. See your doctor for regular checkups. There are several causes for blood pressure including high cholesterol and hardening of the arteries. Personally, my cholesterol was fine, but my blood pressure has risen with age. My doctor prescribed me some medicine for treatment. My blood pressure has been below 140 (systolic) for my whole life but when I turned 45 it rose to 150 and soon went even higher. When I became sick I had it tested again and found it had risen to 180 over 90. High Blood Pressure Medicine - Potassium and Heart Arrhythmias Gastric Bypass Surgery Should be Last Resort
In response to the article on "Study shows that Bariatric Gastric Bypass Surgery is Booming," I’d like to remind your readers that surgery should always be the last resort for any injury, condition, or disease. Obesity is no exception. It’s a mistake for anyone to abandon, or worse, sidestep the proven behavioral solutions of exercise and a balanced diet. The risks of invasive bariatric surgeries (such as gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, duodenal switch, etc.) are substantial. And their benefits can be achieved with less cost, no risk, and less aggravation, using natural means. Gastric Bypass Surgery Should be Last Resort Diet Bright, Diet Might, the Only Diet that is Right!
Which of all the diets that we see is the brightest and mightiest of them all? With so many to choose from and so many plans that involve complicated preparations, combinations, and measurements, how can we determine which is best for us? There is one simple answer, and that is to look at the diet that was originally intended for us from the beginning. It's the one that comes from Mother Nature. Study after study indicates that the majority of our sickness, illness, and disease all come from a deficiency in proper nutrition. That means a deficiency in the nutrients that our bodies were intended to consume. In Mother Nature, plant life has thousands of phytonutrients which, together, provide the fuel to properly run the more than 2,000 physiological processes that are constantly going on in the body. Diet Bright, Diet Might, the Only Diet that is Right! High Blood Pressure Related to Diet with Fruits and Vegetables
According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition people that consume more fruits and vegetables and less meat reduce their risk of high or elevated blood pressure. This has been suspected to be the case, but based on this dietary assessments conducted for 15 years, it appears to be true. An elevated or high blood pressure is defined as a systolic (upper number) pressure over 140 (and / or 85 diastolic). This study defined it as over 130. They compared 4,300 subjects between the ages of 18 and 30. They were roughly equal numbers of black and white men and women. They found that individuals that ate more plant food reduced the risk of high blood pressure. They divided the subjects into five groups or quintiles. Relative to the lowest quintile of intake, the second through fifth quintiles of intake cut their risk from 27% to 36% respectively. Hoodia Gordonii, the very popular and effective weight loss supplement is gaining public awareness here in the US and abroad. The demand is high because it is really the only weight loss supplement that works. It's availability in some countries is limited by Customs regulations and a misunderstanding of these regulations that pertain to the selling of a substance that is derived from a potentially endangered species. What some countries are concerned about, is that the Hoodia coming into their county, is legitimately grown under license and legally sourced. Some countries, Austrailia for example, may not allow Hoodia to be shipped to it's citizens unless accompanied by a copy of a legal form called a CITES and/or a Seller's Permit. These certificates are given to all exporters of legally grown Hoodia Gordonii from South Africa. If a supplier of Hoodia does not have these documents then they are not selling Certified Hoodia Gordonii and in some rare cases, their shipments will not pass Customs. Hoodia Gordonii Products Screened for Legal Sourcing Lung Function and Vitamin D link identified in New Zealand Study
There may be a link between vitamin D and lung health according to a new study out of New Zealand. Researchers led by Peter Black at the University of Auckland looked at 14,091 persons over the age of 20 from the U.S. Third national health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) carried out between 1988 and 1994. The participants had spirometry performed and had serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D measured. The participants were divided into five groups based on vitamin D levels. Typically the higher the vitamin D levels the better the subjects performed on two lung function tests. The first test was the FEV1 (forced expiratory volume). This measured the total amount of air blown out in the first second of maximum exhalation. The second test was the FVC (forced vital capacity) test. This test measured the amount of air blown out during a maximum exhalation. Lung Function and Vitamin D link identified in New Zealand Study Drinking Black or Green Tea will Reduce the Risk of Ovarian Cancer
New research shows that drinking just two cups of tea a day can lower the risk of developing ovarian cancer by almost 50 percent. Previous research has shown that drinking tea can lower the risk of developing some cancers, but this new study indicates it can lower the risk of ovarian cancer by half. The Swedish Mammography Cohort looked at 61,057 women who were between 40 and 76 years old. At the beginning of the study 68 percent of the women said they drank tea at least once a month. Most drank black tea. After 15 years there were 301 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Forbes reports that Dr. Susanna C. Larsson said that “We found a lower risk of ovarian cancer associated with greater tea consumption." Amazingly each additional cup of tea reduced the risk of ovarian cancer by 18%. Drinking Black or Green Tea will Reduce the Risk of Ovarian Cancer Moderate Alcohol Drinking may Reduce Obesity Risk
Although not recommended as a weight lose tactic, a drink a day may lower your risk of becoming obese. According to researchers at the Mayo clinic if you consume 5 drinks a week you were 38% less likely to be obese, compared to non-drinkers. But don’t drink to much because excessive drinking increased your risk of becoming obese or overweight. The team led by James E. Rohrer Ph.D. found that drinkers that consumed four or more alcoholic beverages per day were more likely to be obese than those that did not drink. The study compared the rate of obesity in 8,236 non-smoking participants. The study used data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics between 1988 and 1994. They correlated the body mass index and drinking history. Moderate Alcohol Drinking may Reduce Obesity Risk Leptin Injections may help Dieters Keep the Weight Off
One of the big problems with dieting is gaining back weight. Dieters may lose the pounds but put them right back on. Scientists are beginning to learn why. Researchers at New York’s Columbia University found that overweight people may not produce enough of the leptin hormone. The hormone is made in the fat tissue so as a person loses weight the leptin hormone level falls. This could be the reason why 85% people that lose weight often put at least some of the weight back on. The researchers gave doses of leptin to both obese and lean volunteers who recently lost weight. They found that controlling leptin levels dieters were able to keep the weight from creeping back in people that lacked leptin. The New Flavor Point Diet Claims We Need to Limit Flavor Variety
Many health conditions have been linked to obesity including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Every year there are a plethora of diets that work for some people but not for others. A few years ago the Atkins Diet was the rage. Last year it was the South Beach diet. The diet rage for 2006 may be The Flavor Point Diet. Supported by scientific research from the prestigious Yale Prevention Research Center, the Flavor Point Diet is clinically proven to help shed excess pounds quickly and safely. The ABC News program 20/20 had a segment on this new diet that combines foods selected by flavor. Author of the book, Dr. David Katz, claims this diet “tricks your brain into being satisfied all day long”. There is no need for diet pills or calorie counting, just a well prepared meal plan. The diet incorporates “flavor themes” by week, day, meal or dish. This will enable the dieter to reach the Flavor Point (the moment at which you feel completely full and deliciously satisfied) sooner. The New Flavor Point Diet Claims We Need to Limit Flavor Variety New Gastric Pacemaker FDA Approval for Weight Loss
A new implantable device is up for approval by the FDA which appears to reduce the appetite. The device is similar to a heart pacemaker but the electrodes are implanted into the stomach and not the heart. The ABC News program 20/20 recently aired a segment describing the procedure. It appears to be a safe and effective for treating obesity. Individuals considering the more risky gastric bypass surgery should think about this safer treatment. While the patient is under general anesthesia surgeons use a laparoscope to make small holes in the abdomen. They place small electrical wires into the wall of the stomach. The wires are attached to a battery pack about the size of a silver dollar that is placed just under the skin. New Gastric Pacemaker FDA Approval for Weight Loss Hoodia Marketing Frenzy Has Consumers Confused
With the popularity of Hoodia Gordonii as an all
natural appetite suppressant and weight loss aid at an all time
high, so to is the confusion over it. Consumers don't know what to
look for when purchasing, and more recently, there is controversy
over dosage. The confusion is being fueled by those marketing it.
Quality hoodia is either pure Hoodia, or Hoodia in a
formula, from the Kalahari Desert areas of South Africa. Hoodia from
Texas, Mexico or China has not been shown in clinical trials to
suppress appetite and aid in weight loss. Much of the very
inexpensive Hoodia on the market is sourced in places other than
South Africa.
A quality Hoodia product is obtained using only the
"core" or the heart of the stems of the Hoodia Gordonii plant. Of
the 20 or more species of Hoodia, the Gordonii is the one that
contains the active molecule P57 that acts on the hypothalamus to
suppress hunger pangs. Many other Hoodia species may be on the store
shelves but they will have no effect on your appetite.

Marketing Frenzy Has Consumers Confused
Diet Pills and Dance Exercise may be Effective way to Lose Weight
There are a multitude of diet pills on the market. Many of them have a proven track record and are safe to use. There is evidence that Hoodia and Tonalin will help you to reduce weight. Both are over the counter diet pills that will help you curb your appetite. There is another side to the equation though. Most reputable weight loss programs will stress the exercise variable in their equation. You need to get up and move around. But what type of exercise is best? Everybody has their favorites. Some would favor weight training and others would favor aerobics. Many exercise gurus recommend a little of both. Diet Pills and Dance Exercise may be Effective way to Lose Weight Study Finds Common Supplements and Diet can Help Prevent Disease
The old saying “you are what you eat” may have more evidence to bolster its claims. Rats were injected with a specific amino acid which changed the way their genes were expressed. It may be possible that dietary supplements or drugs could permanently halt the genetic effects that predispose people to mental and physical illnesses. The research was conducted at the McGill University in Montreal Canada by Moshe Szyf, Michael Meaney and their colleagues. They found that certain nutrients and supplements changed genetics by switching off certain genes in rodents, as reported in EureAlert. Two years ago (New Scientist, 9 August 2003, p 14) a similar study was conducted where researchers found that the activity of a mouse's genes could be influenced by food supplements eaten by its mother just prior to or during the early stages of pregnancy. This research was conducted at Duke University. Study Finds Common Supplements and Diet can Help Prevent Disease Over the Counter Diet Pills Hoodia and Tonalin Work
There are a couple promising diet pills on the market. Some of the new pills will need a doctor’s prescription while others won’t. The new pills work best when combined with exercise and a diet change. Lowering your caloric intake and adding a workout three times a week will double the weight loss in some patients. Meridia and Xenical require a doctor’s prescription and could prove to be costly on a monthly basis. Some patients have gained back weight when the treatment is removed so they may need to be taken for life. Tonalin and Hoodia can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. Tonalin has been shown to be a natural and effective method of weight management. Tonalin contains Conjugated linoeic acid or CLA. CLA contains a derivative of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid, is a patented dietary supplement shown in a clinical trial to reduce body fat mass (BFM) in healthy, overweight adults. Over the Counter Diet Pills Hoodia and Tonalin Work New Found Obestatin Hormone may help Dieters lose Weight
Scientists have discovered a new hormone that will decrease appetite. Scientists at Stanford University discovered the hormone Obestatin and have tested it on mice. They hope to develop a treatment for obesity. Dr. Aaron J.W. Hsueh who led the study found that the Obestatin hormone is produced in mice naturally and is likely to be produced in humans as well. Mice that were injected with a synthetic form of Obestatin decreased their food intake by half. They ate only 1/2 gram of kibble instead of one gram compared to the mice that did not get the injection. Even more important, the mice gained less weight when injected with Obestatin. The control group gained 2 grams of weight over a week while the injected mice gained only 1.1 gram. New Found Obestatin Hormone may help Dieters lose Weight New Safe and Effective Diet Pills Meridia and Rimonabant
Two new diet pills have been shown to be safe and effective. A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Nov. 17th shows that the drug Meridia may double weight loss when used in conjunction with exercise and diet. A second drug Xenical (orlistat) has also been approved for safe and effective weight loss. The researchers found the group taking Meridia in conjunction with exercise lost twice as much weight as the group that did not exercise. The group that exercised also changed their diet. Meridia works by modifying the brain chemicals to lower appetite. The subjects felt fuller faster. Researchers stressed that the spectacular results came with a lifestyle change combined with the drug. New Safe and Effective Diet Pills Meridia and Rimonabant MuscleTech Gakic: A new era in Muscle Building Performance
GAKIC, chemically known as
glycine-l-arginine-alpha-ketoisocaproic acid, may be new to
Bodybuilders, athletes, and sports enthusiasts, though it has been
in development for 8 years already and many studies have been done
on this supplement. It's not like creatine, a stimulant or a generic
pre-workout supplement. GAKIC is a pre-workout musclebuilding
supplement.
Many studies have been done on this
supplement and some have been published in publications such as
Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. In one study, GAKIC
supplementation significantly increased the total muscle work
performed during resistance training by an average of 10.5 percent
during the first 15 minutes. In the same study, GAKIC
supplementation was shown to significantly increase fatigue
resistance by up to an average of 28 percent when compared with the
placebo.
To get bigger, the human body has to pass new barriers by blasting through the body's normal fatigue threshold, also known as “failure”. After years of scientific scrutiny, researchers believe that one of the key mechanisms responsible for the performance-enhancing effects of GAKIC is the removal of the fatigue toxin ammonia, which can interfere with normal muscle metabolism and generally limit muscular power output. With decreased fatigue toxin levels, the body can perform more work. This can eventually translate into better muscular gains as training intensity and strength improve over time. MuscleTech Gakic: A new era in Muscle Building Performance Drinking Coffee does not Raise Blood Pressure But Soda Does
Women that drink coffee may not show an increase in blood pressure. According to a new study appearing in the November 9th issue of Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) coffee drinking has no links to temporary hypertension or even persistent high blood pressure. The Study, authored by Dr. Wolfgang Winkelmayer assessed the relationship between coffee intake and physician diagnosed hypertension (blood pressure). They did find that cola consumption increased the risk for hypertension. Caffeine “acutely” increases blood pressure according the team. The study followed women that were free from physician diagnosed hypertension for 12 years. Through questionnaires they compared coffee and cola intake with blood pressure. Drinking Coffee does not Raise Blood Pressure But Soda Does Gene Discovery may Lead to Obesity Treatment
Research out of the Duke Medical Center may shed light on why it is so hard to keep weight off after dieting. It was found that skeletal muscle tissue and cells from obese people were programmed to store fat even when removed from the body and forced to grow in the laboratory. Dr Deborah Duoio found that an accumulation of intramuscular lipids called SCD1 (Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase-1) becomes over-expressed in obese women. The increase of the gene SCD1 starts a cascade of cellular events culminating in increased fat storage in muscle tissue. This may be the key reason why dieting fails. It may be possible to alleviate complications of obesity by inhibiting the SCD1. The research could lead to therapies for weigh / fat loss. "Obesity is a very complex disease, and this metabolic pathway does not fully explain obesity, but it is a likely contributor," said Deborah Muoio, Ph.D., senior study author and assistant professor of medicine at Duke's Sarah W. Stedman Nutrition and Metabolism Center. Gene Discovery may Lead to Obesity Treatment Omega 3 in Fish Diet may slow Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease
There appears to be a new reason to eat fish. By eating fish just once a week a person can slow his or her memory loss associated with aging by 10%. By eating fish even more frequently memory loss can be slowed by 13%. The study was posted in the Archives of Neurology, a JAMA journal. It will appear in the December print edition. Martha Clare Morris, ScD, of Rush University Medical Center, and colleagues analyzed six years of data from an ongoing study of 3,718 Chicago residents, 65 years and older between the years 1993 and 1997 and then followed up with an interview every three years. DASH diet may help lower blood pressure
One out of four American adults currently has high blood pressure. For those over 60 years of age the proportion goes up to one in two. Americans are at an increased risk for heart attacks and strokes because of high blood pressure. Many doctors claim the solution may lay in the diet. The DASH diet may be the answer. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. If your systolic pressure (the upper number) is between 120 and 139 you may be considered pre-hypertension. Anything over 140 is considered Hypertension. Many doctors will prescribe medication at this point including Lisinopril, Diovan and or Hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill). "In the 1970s, we found that blood pressures were lower in vegetarians, who eat little or no fat and cholesterol and lots of fruits, vegetables, and grains rich in potassium, magnesium, and fiber," says Frank Sacks, who helped author the DASH study. This diet approach may also cut the risks for getting diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Complete Article Low Carb Dieting for the Vegetarian
The South Beach Diet by Dr Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist located in the Miami Beach Florida area, added approximately 4,000 vegetarians to his diet website with meatless meal plans and recipes.
