Date Archived: July 12th 2006 Diet of Vegetables Lowers Atherosclerosis Risk - Vegetarians Have Lower Blood Pressure and Increase Good Cholesterol HDL - Study
Researchers have discovered that vegetables are good for you because they reduce hardening of the arteries. Scientists at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine conducted their research on mice that were predispose to developing atherosclerosis, the formation fatty plaques on blood vessel walls which will eventually protrude into the vessel's opening and can reduce blood flow. The mice all had elevated levels of bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL), which is a risk factor for atherosclerosis in humans. The researchers fed half of the mice a diet consisting of 30 percent (of their calories) vegetables. These vegetables included a mixture of freeze-dried broccoli, green beans, corn, peas and carrots. These are five of the top-10 vegetables eaten in the United States based on frequency of consumption. Drinking coffee may reduce the risk of developing cirrhosis of the liver, according to an article in the June12 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Cirrhosis progressively replaces healthy liver tissue with scar tissue, and can be brought on by excessive alcohol consumption. Other factors may play a role in determining who gets cirrhosis including genetics, diet and nutrition, smoking and the interaction of alcohol with other toxins that damage the liver. Hepatitis C can also cause cirrhosis, but heavy alcohol consumption is the primary cause in developed countries. Researchers from the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in Oakland, California, analyzed data from 125,580 individuals who did not report liver disease when they had baseline examinations, between 1978 and 1985. There were 55,247 men and 70,333 women in the study. Researchers at Oregon State University have found that xanthohumol, a compound found in hops, inhibits NF-kappaB protein in cells along the surface of the prostate gland. Xanthohumol is a chief ingredient in beer and this finding may lead to a therapy that could prevent both prostate cancer and prostate enlargement. According to Emily Ho, "We've shown that the addition of xanthohumol in a cell culture blocks the signal of NF-KappaB protein and works to slow down the growth of benign prostatic hyperplasia and malignant prostate cancer cell”. Ho is assistant professor of nutrition and exercise sciences in OSU's College of Health and Human Sciences and a researcher with OSU’s Linus Pauling Institute. New cases of Mad Cow Disease (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy or BSE) have appeared in cows in Texas and Alabama. These cases appear to be an atypical form of the disease. Scientists believe it may be a new strain of the disease that can be passed from cow to cow. Scientists theorize that cows pick up BSE, a cellular prion protein (prions are smaller than viruses), from their feed. In this case however, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed the existence of a rare strain and researchers are still unsure how the disease was transferred. "It's most important right now, till the science tells us otherwise, that we treat this as BSE regardless," the Agriculture Department's chief veterinarian, John Clifford, said. According to FoodConsumer.org, laboratory studies on mice showed that both the classic and atypical strains could be spread from one animal to another. Possible Cow to Cow Transmission of Mad Cow Disease In Texas and Alabama - Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy BSE Cancer and Heart Disease are much lower in Asia possibly from drinking Green Tea
Scientists call it the ‘Asian Paradox’ because of the lower amounts of cancer and cardiovascular disease in Asians, even though these countries have an abundance of heavy smokers. Researchers from the Yale School of Medicine theorize that possibly it is related to the high consumption of green tea. The article was first reported in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. "We do not yet have a full explanation for the 'Asian paradox,' which refers to the very low incidence of both heart disease and cancer in Asia, even though consumption of cigarettes is greater than in most other countries," said the lead author, Bauer Sumpio, M.D. who is a professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery in the Department of Surgery. "But we now have some theories." Researchers at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center believe yoga, as part of a treatment plan for cancer patients, can improve the quality of life. Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the Integrative Medicine Program at M. D. Anderson presented their findings at the 42nd annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The research included sixty-one women with breast cancer undergoing radiation. They were randomized and some took yoga classes twice weekly at or around the time of their radiation therapy appointments. They created a control group that was “to be offered yoga post-treatment.” The patients ranged from Stage 0 to Stage 3. The researchers found that after just one week of yoga and radiation, the patients reported increased physical function, as well as general health, compared to the control group. Also, this group reported better social functioning, significantly lower levels of sleep-related daytime dysfunction, as well as marginally lower levels of fatigue overall. There was no difference in depression or anxiety levels between the two groups. Upsizing your meal to mega-size at the fast food restaurants may be inexpensive but there are hidden costs to eating excessively. A group of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated how much money a single occurrence of overeating costs over the following year. The study will be published in the June 2006 issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. "When confronted with the overwhelming costs of obesity to society as a whole, people don't always take the statistics personally," said Rachel Close who worked with the professor of nutritional science, Dale Schoeller, as part of her master's thesis. "This is another way to present the costs associated with weight gain, and might help convince people that upsizing a meal is no bargain after all. With obesity projected to rise from the current 30 percent to 40 percent of the American population by 2010, this is an important message." Researchers at the University of Washington, Seattle, believe that poor physical performance may be early signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It has been shown that both physical performance and cognitive (thinking, learning and memory) ability tend to decline with age, but few studies have examined how physical performance is linked to the development of dementia or the intermediate stage known as cognitive impairment. This study involved 2,288 participants, age 65 and older, who did not have dementia at the beginning of the study. Between 1994 and 1996, participants underwent initial testing to determine their cognitive abilities, which were scored on a scale from zero to 100. Along with this testing, they performed four tests of physical function. These tests included standing from a seated position five times, a standing balance assessment, a timed 10 foot walk, and a measured grip strength test performed on their dominant hand. Poor Physical Function First Signs of Dementia - Alzheimer's Disease Early Warnings May Include Loss of Balance Limp and Weak Hand Grip Lack of Sleep Linked to Weight Gain - Women Who Slept More Less Likely To Become Obese or Fat - Study Hormone and Appetite Possible Cause
Scientists discovered that women who slept 5 hours or less per night weighed more than those who slept 7 hour. The women who slept 5 hours or les weighed 5.4 pounds more at the beginning of the study than those who slept 7. Making matters worse, the women gained an additional 1.6 pounds more over the next 10 years. Lead researcher Sanjay Patel, M.D said “That may not sound like much, but it is an average amount--some women gained much more than that, and even a small difference in weight can increase a person's risk of health problems such as diabetes and hypertension." Patel is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Metabolic syndrome is a condition which consists of a group of symptoms. The symptoms includes abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high triglyceride levels along with low HDL (“good”) and high LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and diabetes. Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey said that there are approximately 24 percent of adults in the United States over the age of 20 that have the metabolic syndrome. Approximately 40 percent of the people over the age of 60 have the metabolic syndrome. There are about 47 million people in the United States that have metabolic syndrome. A report in Heart Online First said that people with metabolic syndrome have a significant increased risk for developing heart failure in their middle age years. Metabolic Syndrome – Increased risk for Heart Failure in Middle Age Benzene Found in 5 Soft Drinks - FDA Tested 100 Sodas - Exceeds EPA Levels of Cancer Causing Ingredients - List of Beverages
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found benzene, a known carcinogen for humans, in several soft drinks. The FDA says the levels are higher than 5 parts per billion, which is the limit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows for drinking water. The FDA said that “although one sample from a production lot may contain elevated benzene levels, it does not mean that all the products from that lot will have elevated levels, or that all lots of a given product will contain elevated levels." The companies involved have been notified and have reformulated their drinks or plan to comply with EPA standards. According to Forbes reporter, Andrew Bridges, benzene is linked to leukemia and can form in soft drinks containing two ingredients: Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, and either of the two preservatives: sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate. Researchers from The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James) found that a derived form of vitamin E can cause cancer cells to die. The study was first published in the April 28th issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Vitamin E succinate also known as alpha tocopheryl succinate which is available in supplement form is often taken due to the antioxidant benefits. There has been some previous research that has shown a slight ability to kill cancer cells when taking this supplement. Vitamin E succinate has been considered a chemopreventive agent. The method the cancer cells are killed is through a natural process called apoptosis which is a programmed cell death. The researchers wanted to further understand why the vitamin E succinate was capable of killing cancer cells. If you suffer from a peptic or duodenal ulcer, the last thing you might consider taking is hot Cayenne Pepper. This goes against everything you've ever heard about what aggravates an ulcer, the facts are that most "spicy" foods do just the opposite. Capsicum (Cayenne Pepper) can reduce pain which serves as a local anesthetic to ulcerated tissue in the stomach and can even help to control bleeding in the stomach. Some individuals may be bothered by eating "Red Pepper" or spicy foods, these foods do not cause the formation of gastric ulcers in normal people. An interesting note is that people suffering from ulcers usually avoid Cayenne Pepper, in fact those people may actually benefit from its therapeutic action. Stomach Ulcers - Cayenne Peppers may help Improve Condition Exercise Prevents Cancer By Promoting Cell Death - Both Skin and Bowel Cancer Studies Show Voluntary Workouts Reduce Risk
Two studies highlight the benefits of exercise, including lower risks of skin cancer and bowel cancer. In the first study, published in the journal Carcinogenesis, exposed female mice to ultraviolet B light (UVB). The researchers found that the mice that had 24-hour access to running wheels took longer to develop skin tumors and had fewer of them. The tumors were also smaller in the mice that were exercising. Scientists believe that programmed cell death, called apoptosis, can be triggered by exercise. The problem with cancer cells is that they do not die like normal cells. Dr. Allan Conney said “Preliminary indications from follow-up work in the laboratory suggest that voluntary exercise enhances UVB-induced apoptosis in the skin, and that it also enhances apoptosis in UVB-induced tumors. So, although UVB is triggering the development of tumors, exercise is counteracting the effect by stimulating the death of the developing cancer cells.” Dr. Conney is Garbe professor of Cancer and Leukemia Research. Exercise Prevents Cancer By Promoting Cell Death - Both Skin and Bowel Cancer Studies Show Voluntary Workouts Reduce Risk Prostate Cancer – Consuming excess Milk and Meat may Increase Risk
According to a report on the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine website, consuming too much dairy and meat may increase a man’s risk for developing prostate cancer. They have assembled a collection of studies that show possible clues as to why the dairy and meat may have contributed to the increased risk for prostate cancer in men. They believe that the risk is higher is due to the saturated fat levels among other factors. In the American diet we consume way too much saturated fat in relationship to the unsaturated fat. This dietary imbalance could be a large contributing factor. Prostate Cancer – Consuming excess Milk and Meat may Increase Risk Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Medications may have dangerous interactions when taken with Grapefruit Juice
Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that some prescription drugs can possibly cause dangerous interactions when taken with grapefruit juice. It was originally believed that flavonoids from the grapefruit juice caused the interactions; however the researchers believe that it is because of a chemical called furanocoumarins that is found in the grapefruit which contributes to the problem. Grapefruit juice causes some drugs to not be absorbed because an intestinal enzyme called CYP3A partially destroys the medication before it is absorbed. The researchers first reported there discovery in the May issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Medications may have dangerous interactions when taken with Grapefruit Juice Dr. Oz’s 90 Day Plan showed Oprah and viewers how to get Younger and Healthier
Oprah Winfrey had Dr. Oz on her show to share how to eat better to get healthier and younger. Some was diet and exercise advice. The authors Michael F. Roizen, Mehmet Oz M.D., shared some of the information from their book called, “YOU: The Owner's Manual: An Insider's Guide to the Body that Will Make You Healthier and Younger.” Another book by Michael F. Roizen is called “The RealAge Makeover: Take Years off Your Looks and Add Them to Your Life.” One of the secrets is to understand what you are eating. Look at the ingredients on the package label. If sugar or high fructose corn syrup is top on the list of ingredients it is not a good food choice. Dr. Oz recommends foods that have sugar in them also contain fiber or complex carbohydrates. Mixing the sugar with a complex carbohydrate will slow the absorption of the sugar into the system and help to control an insulin rise and rapid drop following. Dr. Oz’s 90 Day Plan showed Oprah and viewers how to get Younger and Healthier Obesity – Statistics Underestimated more Americans are Overweight and Obese
Obesity has been on the rise for both adults and children in the United States. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) believes that the currents statistics are too low and the more people are obese than previously thought. The reason these researchers believe that the data is incorrect is because of the telephone surveys used to collect the information. Telephone survey data showed that people may have underestimated their weight and height. The report will be printed in the May issue of the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. The data collected for the national and state level of obesity comes from two different sources. The first source is from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the other is the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The BRFSS uses telephone surveys to collect data and is used in both the state and national levels for obtaining obesity statistics. The other source, NHANES, used in-person interviews that measure the height and weight of those who participated in a clinical exam. Obesity – Statistics Underestimated more Americans are Overweight and Obese Pregnancy - Vitamins C and E Don’t Prevent Birth Complications – Symptoms - Preeclampsia Not Avoided by Large Doses of Antioxidants
Large doses of vitamins C and E won’t prevent preeclampsia, according to research in the April 27th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Preeclampsia is a relatively common but potentially dangerous pregnancy complication, which affects 5-8% of all pregnancies. Preeclampsia occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and is characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Symptoms include swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision, but according to the Preeclampsia Foundation, some women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms. The study included 1,877 Australian women pregnant for the first time. The researchers excluded women who were pregnant with multiple fetuses and women with chronic health conditions, such as kidney disease and high blood pressure. They found that the addition of these vitamins did not prevent preeclampsia or even lower the risk of complications for the infant. One reason people have a hard time losing weight could be because they don’t get enough sleep. According to Dr. Eve Van Cauter, of the University of Chicago, sleep deprivation reduced the production of the growth hormone that helps control the body's proportion of muscle to fat. The ABC News Program Good Morning America (GMA) ran a story that supports the idea that lack of sleep can cause weight gain. Medical contributor, Dr. David Katz spotlighted a study that indicates that sleeping fewer than eight hours a night boosts our levels of ghrelin, a hormone that makes us feel hungry, while suppressing another hormone, leptin, that makes us feel full. Katz said that "There's convincing evidence that a good night's sleep really can pay dividends in terms of weight control." You know what makes exercising on a treadmill so effective in losing weight and getting in shape ¬ the ability to adjust the incline. With the push of a button you can adjust the intensity level of your workout to any degree. If you live in a flatlander state like Illinois and you run or walk outside, you’re stuck at one level. With a treadmill you can simulate running or walk on hills or mountains, and that is where you start getting the heart beating and the calories burning. Breaking Out of the Exercise Rut For those of us who exercise regularly, we tend to get into a rut. And once you get stuck in a rut you reach a plateau. You find that you are not losing any more weight, and you are not getting in better shape. The state medical board of Mississippi ordered 14 weight loss businesses that do ear stapling because they say they are doing so illegally. According to a news report by ABC news, Mal Morgan who is the executive director of the Mississippi Board of Medical Licensure had received several complaints of people that had the ear stapling performed causing serious ear infections. Doctor’s in the state had more people coming in to get the staple removed and to treat the infection. The ear stapling business advertised this as a weight loss procedure which is why they closed down the businesses as they are practicing medicine without a license. A study of Americans that ate a Mediterranean diet had a reduced risk for getting Alzheimer’s disease in their old age. The report was first published in the April issue of the Annals of Neurology. According to Oldway’s website they depict the Mediterranean diet along with other food pyramids based on cultures. A Mediterranean diet includes lots of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, rice, pasta, beans, legumes and nuts are eaten on a daily basis. Olive oil and other plant oils along with cheese and yogurt are all part of a daily eating plan. Fish, poultry, eggs, and sweets are on a weekly basis, with red meat being eaten on a monthly basis. Why do we still buy big brand name foods that we know are bad for us? According to James Tillotson, PhD, MBA, professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University said the reason why big brand names survive, “mega-brands maintain their strong grip on our diet because consumers, food companies, and supermarkets are intertwined in a symbiotic relationship that yields great benefits for all three.” Tillotson has a two-part series in his Business and Nutrition column in Nutrition Today who looks at the brand name products and refers to them as “fortress brands” because they are hard for competitors to take their market share. “In spite of a deluge of popular press coverage in recent years about pros and cons of following the Dietary Guideline recommendations, consumer surveys continue to report that taste still trumps all other rationales in motivating food purchases by catering to our strong liking for sweets, fats and oils, and salt,” Tillotson wrote in his column. Nutrition – Why Consumers by Mega-Brand Name Food Even when they know it’s not Nutritious Muscle Building and Weight Loss – Researchers find Protein that Increases Metabolism and Suppressing Appetite by Weightlifting
Canadian researchers have discovered a small protein that works in muscles to increase metabolism and is also able to suppress the appetite. The protein is called ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF). This study was first reported in the Nature Medicine journal. Other research has focused on the leptin hormone for decreasing appetite. This research study was led by Dr. Greg Steinberg - a Target Obesity fellow funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Canadian Diabetes Association and found that CNTF could be a possible treatment for obesity. The CNTF works by activating an enzyme called skeletal muscle AMP kinase. This process increases the body’s ability to burn fat and sugar. The understanding of the method that CNTF works could lead to new ways to help a person with losing weight. Dr. Ian Smith is the author of the “Fat Smash Diet” and has helped Hollywood celebrities lose weight on VH1’s best rated show called “Celebrity Fit Club”. Dr. Smith visited last Friday’s NBC Today show and shared what the different phases of the diet plan entails. Phase 1 is called Detox Phase. This phase lasts for 10 days and you limit your diet intake to fruits and vegetables. The detox phase is intended to help clean your body of imperfections. Dr. Smith said that people can lose anywhere from 6 – 10 pounds during this phase of the diet. In Phase 2 called the Foundation you add 3 – 4 ounces of meat or seafood to your diet. You add oatmeal, yogurt, brown rice and egg whites in addition to the fruit and vegetables that you are already eating. You also start to add back cheese, cereal, and drinks to your diet. You also learn about portions, but you don’t count calories. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may approve an over the counter (OTC) version of the prescription weight loss drug Xenical (orlistat). The FDA issued an “approval letter” Friday which says the agency believes the product is worthy of approval. Jennifer Corbett Dooren of Marketwatch reported that there may be some conditions that need to be met before the drug is allowed to market. Xenical is marketed by Roche Holding AG, but the rights to the OTC version were sold to the British firm, GlaxoSmithKline PLC's (GSK). This is expected to be a weaker version of Xenical. The drug works by preventing fat from being absorbed by the body. Some of the side effects may include excess gas and an oily discharge. If this drug ultimately wins approval, it would be the only weight loss drug approved for OTC sales by the FDA. It is unknown what conditions need to be met, but GSK said in a statement, "GSK Consumer Healthcare will work with the FDA to address their comments and recommendations." Men are women are different when it comes to moving in together. Women usually gain weight and men typically lose weight during relationships. Men will also keep at a steady weight following breakups. The lead author Amelia Lake, a research fellow with Newcastle University's Human Nutrition Research Centre, believes this is due to the so called “honeymoon period” where each partner takes on the other’s eating habits. It appears that women usually eat more healthy foods and begin to eat less healthy when they move in with men. The reverse is also true. Men usually eat less healthy, but begin to eat healthier when they move in with the woman. The woman’s healthy eating habits tend to have a positive long term impact on her partner. The researchers say that both partners try to please each other during the “honeymoon period”. They tend to adjust their eating routine to suit their partners’. Women Gain Weight and Men Lose When They Move In Together - Couples Change Eating Habits When They Get Married Low Calorie Diet May Extend Life - Study in Humans Concludes Cutting Calories Influences Two Biomarkers of Longevity
A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (JAMA) adds support to the contention that low calorie diets will help you live longer, or at least slow the aging process. Earlier studies proved that mice on extremely low calorie diets lived longer than their peers that were fed normally. Scientists have theorized that a low calorie diet impacts the metabolism, including alterations in insulin sensitivity and signaling, neuroendocrine function, stress response, or a combination of these. These conditions will affect aging. The researchers in Louisiana used humans this time to determine whether a prolonged calorie diet could influence the aging process. They used a control group to help determine if a calorie restrictive diet could influence the fasting insulin levels and body temperature, two biomarkers of longevity. Low Calorie Diet May Extend Life - Study in Humans Concludes Cutting Calories Influences Two Biomarkers of Longevity Moderate Drinking may not Prevent Heart Attacks - New Study Says Older Studies May Be Flawed - Glass of Wine Every Day Shows No Benefit
Earlier studies that suggest moderate drinking or a drinking a glass of wine everyday may help prevent a heart attack might be flawed. This may be because people in the studies that quit drinking may have quit consuming alcohol because of poor health. This could have skewed the results to favor drinking. According to the report, “This was only the case, however, when they deliberately included error by evaluating both long-term abstainers with people who had reduced alcohol intake or quit drinking recently. Study authors caution their report has not disproved the notion that light drinking is good for health.” The new study simply questions the extent to which these benefits actually translate into longer life. Kaye Fillmore, Ph.D. of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), said “We know that older people who are light drinkers are usually healthier than their non-drinking peers. Our research suggests light drinking is a sign of good health, not necessarily its cause." ABC News highlighted some habits that can be used by overweight people to become thin. Researchers from Pennsylvania found that thin people tend to eat low calorie density foods. These foods contain high water content. Examples include fruits, vegetables, water-based soups and stews, and cooked whole grains. They typically don’t count calories or carry a food scale around with them, according to Barbara Rolls, professor of nutrition at Pennsylvania State University. Lorie Parch writes in Real Simple Magazine that thin people “keep an eye on what they eat without being obsessive, many focus on filling their plates with mostly fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.” According to Rolls, thin people tend to eat five small meals a day rather than three squares. This makes it easier to scale down portions. Thin people don’t skip meals. According to the report, they don’t skip breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal. According to the ABC News story “A recent study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that people who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight than those who didn't.” I have to admit, I have met many thin people that did skip breakfast. Kids in the study, who are currently 10 to 13 years of age, were followed since birth. The Iowa Fluoride Study recorded food and beverage intakes multiple times throughout those years. The well water and purchased beverages were analyzed for fluoride concentrations. When the kids were between 7.7 and 12 years of age, they had dental examinations, where researchers looked for evidence of fluorosis. The researchers compared amounts of fluoride consumed and children with and without fluorosis in their permanent incisors. They found that 35% of the children had some evidence of dental fluorosis, most of which was mild. Researchers believe that weight training significantly improves the quality of life in women recently treated for breast cancer. Minnesota doctors found that six months of twice weekly exercise that improved strength and body composition was enough to result in improvements in the overall physical and emotional condition of the patients. It is not unusual for newly diagnosed and treated breast cancer patients to suffer from multitude quality of life limiting complaints, including insomnia, weight gain, chronic fatigue, depression, and anxiety. Although treatments for breast cancer have progressed rapidly, treatment for these secondary complaints has only recently been compared. There are several physical options available for the management of these secondary issues involving breast cancer survivors. The researchers compared aerobic and weight training and found weight training produced better results. Any way you cut it, cleansing will always be critically acclaimed by internal cleansing ethicist the world round. They will sing their praises of what internal cleansing has done for them personally and other people. Okay a person might want to address some of the underlying issues such as learning what to eat and how to eat. These issues are almost always glossed over by main stream medicine. I can remember an old vacation my husband and I took. We vacationed seven whole days in beautiful Myrtle Beach. On our way home from our much needed vacation, I realized something: “I LEFT FOOD OUT ON THE KITCHEN COUNTER.” Yikes! After flying up my front steps acting as if I could somehow stop the putrefying, rotting process. Silly me! I unlocked the door walked in to my home and W O S H! The smell so pungent. It stunk. A smell that would send a herd of cattle running to the nearest exit. Are You Full OF IT? Cleansing and Detox Programs Compare Diets – Low Calorie Diet With DASH Diet – One Proven to Lower Blood Pressure – Calorie Restriction (CR) Proven to Extend Life
Two doctors in the original DASH diet group have recommended a modification in their original regimen to help reduce triglycerides and increase the good HDL cholesterol, by increasing fat and protein in the diet. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet developed in the 1990s was designed to lower blood pressure, and at that time was the only diet proven to this. The original DASH Diet was rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. The diet also required reduced intakes of saturated fat, total fat and cholesterol. The diet proved to lower the bad LDL cholesterol but also lowered the good HDL cholesterol. The diet had no effect on triglycerides levels. This prompted the two researchers to look further and improve the original plan. The original DASH diet recommended 4 to 5 servings of both fruits and vegetables, 7 to 8 servings of grain products, some nuts and low-fat or non-fat dairy products, and even some snacks and sweets. One goal was to reduce sodium intake, so crackers without salt was recommended, among other salt reductions. Scientists from the Paterson Institute at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, England, believe that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids could block the spread of prostate cancer. It has been known for some time that both omega-3 and omega-6 oils have promoted good health. Since the body can not make these fats, it is important to eat foods rich in them. These foods include fish and fish oil, canola and flaxseed oils, and most raw nuts. Nutritionists say it is important to keep a balance of the two fats / oils. Some nutritionists believe that adults do better with fish oil rather than plant oils, but there are some benefits to the plant oils (nuts) as well. Dr. Mick Brown said “Omega-6 fats, found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, increased the spread of tumor cells into bone marrow. This invasion was blocked by omega 3 fats -- the ones found in oily fish.” Brown is the chief scientist in the research. There were three heart attacks and two deaths associated with the heart attacks at the Los Angeles Marathon the other day. Experts want to remind people that sudden cardiac death during exertion is extremely rare in women. All three heart attacks at the marathon involved men and this was the first time there was more than one heart attack during the LA Marathon. Typically regular exercise may significantly lower the long-term risk, according to a study in the March 22/29 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on women's health. Always check with your doctor before you begin an exercise regimen. Sudden death heart attacks are more likely to strike men than women. Christine Albert, M.D., told NBC reporters in an interview that "In comparison to a prior study that we did among male physicians, the risk of sudden cardiac death during vigorous exertion was approximately 19 times higher in men than in women." Oprah Winfrey had a terrific show today about slowing down aging. One of her guests was the author of Mireille Guiliano who is the author of the book “French Women Don’t Get Fat.” Oprah said on her show that 67% of Americans are fat, compared to only 11% of people in France. When Oprah interviewed Mireille it was interesting to find out that her book was not intended as a weight loss diet fad type of book, but more of a lifestyle change in how to approach eating. Mireille recommended that you spend 20 minutes to sit down to a meal. Don’t try to multi-task while eating. Eating is to be enjoyed she explains. She said not to take away foods like many fad diets do. Try to find a balance. You can indulge in deserts and pizza, but find a balance. The next day you might eat a more nutritious meal such as grapefruit with an egg and toast. “French Women Don’t Get Fat” by Mireille Guiliano offers Weight Loss by Lifestyle Changes Gastric Bypass Surgery with Severely Obese patients helped Lower Blood Pressure
A new study from the University of Pittsburgh found that exceedingly obese patients that undergo gastric bypass bariatric surgery often have a long-term benefit of lowered blood pressure and some patients no longer need to take hypertensive medications. This study was first published in the March issue of the Archives of Surgery. The reason for the correction in blood pressure is that after the stomach is reduced in size the patients lose a large amount of weight. This improves the patients overall health. There are approximately two-thirds of the excessively obese patients that have high blood pressure. There is a new genetic test customers can take at home that may help determine which diet is best for them. Potential dieters swab the inside of their cheek to collect a DNA sample, fill out a questionnaire, and send them both back to Sciona. Sciona is a privately held, international company that provides personalized health and nutrition recommendations based on an individual’s diet, lifestyle and unique genetic profile. The company analyzes 19 genes that affect bone health, heart health, antioxidant and detoxification, insulin resistance, and inflammation. After the analysis they will recommend dietary changes to counteract the customer’s genetic weaknesses. Sciona’s Director of Nutrition, Yael Joffe says, “You may eat well, exercise, and take nutritional supplements, but minor variations in your genes can put you at risk." The Nutrigenetic testing will identify genetic variations which may indicate an individual's risk for developing specific health conditions including cancer, heart disease and diabetes. There have been questions whether or not the Atkins diet is safe. A group of researchers from the New York School of Medicine says it is not safe and should not be recommended. One of the complications that can occur on this diet is called ketoacidosis which can be life threatening if not treated. Diabetic ketoacidosis is more commonly seen, but with low-carb dieting a person enters into a state called ketosis. The Atkins diet encourages a person to get into the ketosis state for rapid weight loss. Klaus-Dieter Lessnau along with colleagues did a case report about this life-threatening complication when a 40 year old obese woman was on the Atkins diet. The woman was following the diet strictly. She developed ketoacidosis which is caused when excessively high levels of acids called ketones are found in the blood. When starvation occurs the liver produces Ketones. Low carbohydrate diets like the Atkins diet leads to Ketones being produced. Atkins Diet Warning - Researchers do not recommend for Weight Loss due to Health Risks What is a Supplement and Why do you need one?
One of the easiest ways you can help your own effort to lose weight and get healthy is through the use of supplementation. A supplement shouldn't be some concentrated megadose vitamin that doesn't have the all of the other nutrients that exists in juice and fiber of the fruit or vegetable. No, a supplement should be "that which is closest to the actual content of the food, plus have as much of the nutrients in tact that is contained in the juice of the fruit or vegetable." For years it has been difficult to avoid offering supplements of some sort - after all, everyone wants to take them. But optimally, the only supplements that should be taken are ones that fits many criteria, which up until now we have been unable to find. Some may fit many, but just about every supplement doesn't fit all of the necessary criteria. What is a Supplement and Why do you need one?
Low Glycemic Index Diets May Not Lower Blood Sugar Levels – Low Carbohydrate Diets Including Atkins and South Beach Questioned
Many dieticians recommend diets with a low glycemic index (GI), which is a measure of the effects of a given food on blood sugar levels. More accurately, the Glycemic Index (GI) is a measure of the glycemic effect of carbohydrate in a particular food compared to an equivalent amount of carbohydrate in a standard amount of glucose or white bread. There is another factor to consider besides GI, and that is Glycemic Load (GL). The GL is the GI of the food divided by 100 and then multiplied by the grams of carbohydrate from a single serving of that food. If the specific food in consumed in small quantities a high GI may not always equate to a high GL. It may be more important to calculate the GL rather than the GI for people that need low sugar diets. This may help explain why recent research has not been able to explain why studies have failed to find links between high-GI foods and elevated blood sugar and diabetes. It was about a year ago and I was going through my regimen as usual at the gym. I was trying to gain some muscle mass before I started training for my upcoming fight (I compete in mixed martial arts). I ended up getting in a conversation with an old school professional bodybuilder and I told him my goals for training. To gain muscle mass he suggested that I try doing "breath squats". He said that this lift (along with shoe string deadlifts) were the only resistance exercises that would release growth hormones. Being young and open minded I decided to try it out. It was by far one of the toughest leg workouts I've ever done, but it gave me huge gains in leg strength. I was also pleased to notice additional muscle gains in the rest of body which pleasantly surprising given the fact I’m a hard-gainer. Trying to Put on Some Lean Muscle? Combination Folic Acid with Vitamin B supplements may not lower cardiovascular risk, according to a new studies in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Researchers announced at the American College of Cardiology, in Atlanta that lowering homocysteine levels by supplementation has no effect in preventing heart attacks, and may even trigger them. The studies focused on people that have already had heart attacks or suffer from diabetes and other ailments. There were two studies in the NEJM concerning the supplements. One of the studies indicated that there may be a "marginally significant" decrease in stroke risk after supplementation. This may not be worth the risk though. The authors of one of the studies (Homocysteine Lowering and Cardiovascular Events after Acute Myocardial Infarction) concluded that “Treatment with B vitamins did not lower the risk of recurrent cardiovascular disease after acute myocardial infarction. A harmful effect from combined B vitamin treatment was suggested. Such treatment should therefore not be recommended.” Folic Acid and Vitamin B did not Reduce Subsequent Heart Attack Risk - Two Studies Found Supplements Lowered Homocysteine Levels Not Risk Calcium Supplements Can Save Lives in Pregnant Women – Helps Prevent Premature Child Birth and Lowers Risk of Pregnancy Complications
There may be a link between calcium deficiencies and two serious complications during pregnancy, preeclampsia and eclampsia, Preclampsia is the development of high blood pressure and protein in the urine during pregnancy. Eclampsia is a life threatening condition that can kill both the mother and child. Researchers under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO), investigated whether a calcium supplement could reduce the complications and the mortality from these conditions. They looked at 8,300 women with low dietary calcium and gave half 1.5 gram calcium supplements, while giving the other half a placebo. Before the study all of the women had a daily intake of 600 milligrams or less. This was about half the recommended intake for pregnant women. Although the calcium supplements did not reduce the incidence of preeclampsia, it did lower their "severe preeclamptic complications index" and "severe maternal morbidity and mortality index." They were less likely to die from the illness. Multiple research studies are coming to the same conclusion that excess body fat causes an inflammation response in their body that can be deadly. A recent report in the International Journal of Obesity by researchers from the University of Warwick Medical School found that the biggest health risk to overweight and obese people is the killer inflammation response created from the excess body fat. Professor F.P. Cappuccio and Dr. M.A. Miller looked at 3 different ethnic groups that were overweight or obese. They measured the Body Mass Index (BMI) and the participant’s Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) to determine the amount of body fat a person was carrying. The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists are exploring how to make healthier yogurt and cheese products. Yogurt could possibly become a heart healthy food choice with a C-Trim ingredient. The C-Trim is a derivative of oats and barley and contains beta-glucan which is a soluble fiber. The goal that ARS scientists have is to find ways to cut calories and to increase the foods nutritional value. ARS scientists from across the country reported some of their successful results in the March 2006 issue of Agricultural Research magazine. This issue’s main focus was all about obesity. By improving the food nutrition and lowering calories it would hopefully turn the trend of obesity around. Researchers are looking for a safe alternative to gastric bypass surgery, in a attempt to find a “gold standard” treatment. Nearly 170,000 patients underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2005 and spent an estimated 4.5 billion dollars on the procedure. This is up 1000 percent from a decade early. There have been concerns associated with the procedure, and most doctors look at operating as the last resort. According to the Anne Collins website “About 10-20 percent of patients undergoing stomach bypass require follow-up operations to correct complications, the most common complaints being abdominal hernias.” Most people that consider gastric bypass surgery have failed other weight loss plans and do turn to the procedure as a last resort. According to an NBC News Story, BlueCross and BlueShield of Western New York sought the $5 million study by the University at Buffalo, after being unable to find a model treatment for the severely obese, defined as having a body mass index of greater than 40. A recent study of cholesterol lowering foods such as soy protein, almonds, plant sterols that are put in special margarines, oats and barley showed that they will do a better job at lowering cholesterol when used together. The participants that stayed on a specific diet of these foods were able to lower their LDL “bad” cholesterol as well as the first generation statin drugs did. The study by Professor David Jenkins from the University of Toronto reported these findings in the current issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. How to Lower Cholesterol by eating a selection of Heart Healthy Foods Gene Can Determine Heart Attack Risk for Coffee Drinkers - Caffeine May Increase Risk and Cause Decreased Blood Flow During Exercise
A new study indicates that there may be genetic link between caffeine and heart attacks. According to researchers from the University of Toronto, an enzyme called cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) metabolizes caffeine in the liver. A gene variation for this enzyme can slow or quicken caffeine metabolism. The Toronto team wanted to study whether this gene variation may be associated with an increased risk of non-fatal heart attacks. They compared 2,014 patients with a first nonfatal heart attack with 2,014 healthy people. Their findings showed that participants with the slow-metabolism variation of the gene, who drank two to three cups of coffee a day, had a 36-percent increased risk of having a heart attack. Researcher may have found a link between serotonin levels and heart disease. According to a study presented by University of Pittsburgh researchers at the 64th Annual Scientific Conference of the American Psychosomatic Society in Denver, a less active brain serotonin system is associated with early hardening of the arteries. This breakthrough could be helpful in developing a treatment for preventing heart disease and stroke. Matthew F. Muldoon, M.D., said "Many of the known risk factors for heart disease and stroke – high blood pressure and cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking and lack of exercise – can, to some extent, be controlled by our lifestyle choices." He said that there were no previous studies that examined brain abnormalities and atherosclerosis. The human body needs a small amount of cholesterol to function, but too much cholesterol can cause health problems, including coronary heart disease. Americans spent over $16 billion on statin drugs last year, according to the New York Times. These drugs include Lipitor and Zocor. Consumers are always looking for inexpensive ways to lower their cholesterol without medication. A recent study has shown that the Tahitian noni juice may lower the bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides in smokers. The sales of the drink have ballooned to over $1 billion after various news agencies including ABC News, reported on the study. Noni juice is made from a bumpy fruit of the noni plant. The plants are found in the Polynesian Islands and have a medicinal history among the locals for some 2000 years. Recent research has found that the drink contains high levels of anti-oxidants. "Obesity increases the risk of contracting cancer," said Dr. Javier Salvador, Director of the Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition at the University Hospital of the University of Navarra. Dr. Javier said that more people are overweight than ever before. It is found in both industrialized countries and in developing countries as well. He points out that in Spain 15% of the population suffers from obesity and 54% are overweight. He believes that the cause for obesity is by people eating more calories and having a sedentary lifestyle. Dr. Javier’s concerns for Western society is a rise in infant obesity. When these obese babies grow up they will become obese adults. There are more obese children that are developing type II diabetes at young ages. Researchers from the Netherlands say that chocolate consumers were half as likely to die from cardiovascular problems as those who did not partake in the sweet products. The data was extrapolated from Zutphen Elderly Study conducted between 1985 and 2000. Brian Bujisse of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven, measured the cocoa intake of 470 men between the ages of 65 and 84. The researchers measured how many grams of cocoa each man consumed and divided the men into three groups according to their intake. ABC News reported that the men who ate the most cocoa products had half the “risk of death”. The experts have identified 24 cocoa-containing foods that the elderly men ate. None of the men were taking blood pressure medicine, according to a report in Scientific American. New research has found that an investigational therapy for bone loss, denosumab, demonstrated significant increases in bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. A person’s BMD can be an indicator for fracture risk, according to a study published in the Feb. 23, 2006 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Denosumab is a RANK Ligand inhibitor under development by Amgen. Ligand is a protein that is the primary “mediator” of osteoclast formation, function and survival. These osteoclasts are responsible for bone removal. This study is in the second stage and the researchers were able to dmonstrate that “denosumab provides rapid and sustained responses of bone metabolism in patients with low BMD.” Denosumad can be administered twice yearly and will increased total hip, spine, distal 1/3 radius and total body BMD similar to current therapy. Osteoporosis Patients may Benefit From New Drug - Two Injections of Denosumab per Year will Increase Bone Mass in Postmenopausal Women Heart and Brain Health Linked - Alzheimer's Disease Risk can be Lowered by Exercise and Mental Stimulation
Heart health and brain health are associated with each other, according to a multi-Institute collaboration of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published online today in Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association. It may be possible to maintain brain health as we age by making good lifestyle choices, such as exercise, learning new things and staying socially connected. From the public health perspective, the researchers believe that by controlling cardiovascular (CV) risk factors we can help maintain “brain health”. These factors include reducing blood pressure, reducing weight, reducing cholesterol, treating (or preferably avoiding) diabetes, and not smoking. Committee chair Hugh Hendrie, MB, ChB, DSc, said “Based on our review of CV risk factors, the link between hypertension and cognitive decline was the most robust across studies.” He is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine. Heart and Brain Health Linked - Alzheimer's Disease Risk can be Lowered by Exercise and Mental Stimulation The Jerusalem Diet – 24 Hour Dieting
The Jerusalem Diet was created by Ted Haggard, a pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs. The reason that the diet is called “The Jerusalem Diet” was that in 1998 he traveled to Jerusalem and had gained too much weight. He thought he would eat only fruits, veggies and nuts for one day. After a day of this he felt better and the clothes fit better. His diet encourages you to weigh yourself every day so that you don’t get off your goal weight. If he gains a pound or two he restricts his diet and exercises for an hour. This usually turns into a weight correction within 24 hours. He doesn’t promote fast weight loss, but makes it more manageable. The diet also addresses addictions to food, cigarettes, and caffeine. It sounds like exercise should be on a regular basis, more than just once a week. He recommends 14 super foods to eat on the diet which are healthy foods choices.
