Rochester Institute of Technology uses EWL Lithography Method to make 26 Nanometer Computer Chips

Bruce Smith

Bruce Smith, Rochester Institute of Technology (RTI) professor of microelectronic engineering and also the director of the Center for Nanolithography Research in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, has led a team of engineering students to develop a new process of Nanolithography that uses evanescent wave lithography (EWL) to produce the smallest ever semiconductor device geometry.

Yongfa Fan, who is a doctoral student in RIT’s Microsystems engineering Ph.D. program, achieved the 26 nanometer size, which was only previously made possible by extreme ultraviolet wavelength methods.  This development advancement in technology is at least five years sooner than projected, based on the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors.  Rochester Institute of Technology uses EWL Lithography Method to make 26 Nanometer Computer Chips

bathroom

Researchers from University of New South Wales, Australia, are working on developing a coating that may make cleaning bathrooms less of a chore.

The lead researchers Professor Rose Amal and Professor Michael Brungs of the ARC Centre for Functional Nanomaterials, are hoping to apply a coating of tiny particles of titanium dioxide to keep the toilets clean.  Currently the titanium dioxide is being used on outdoor items like self-cleaning windows.

How it works is that ultraviolet light below a specific wavelength causes electrons to excite and this gives the effects of oxidation.  This oxidation disinfects better than commercial bleach.  It makes it better for sanitation as it is continually cleaning instead of waiting for the janitor.  Nano Technology may make cleaning Toilets a thing of the Past

The Kama Sutra Virus – Worm will hit Friday – Spyware Backup and Virus Software will Help

Kama Sutra

The Kama Sutra Virus / worm is going to be activated on Friday.  It has been spreading around the world via email, but won’t begin destroying computer files until Friday, February 3rd

There are some things you can do.  First you should back everything up.  There are many backup programs available that automatically back your files up.  This should be done frequently because even without the destructive force of a virus, hard drives can become corrupted and eventually completely fail.

The virus was spread from user to user via email.  The subject is usually about a photo or video.  Here is a short list of attachments you want to watch for: my photos, schoolgirl fantasies gone bad, the best video clip ever, a great video, give me a kiss,*Hot movie*, Fwd: Photo, Fw: Sexy, Fw: Pictures, Miss. Lebanon or please see the file. Never open attachments, unless you are expecting a certain file.  The Kama Sutra Virus – Worm will hit Friday – Spyware Backup and Virus Software will Help

NASA Launches New Horizons Space Craft on Mission to Pluto

Today's Launch

Scientists have been debating whether Pluto should be classified as a planet or just another rock in space orbiting the sun.  Hopefully this question will be answered by NASA in 9 years.  Today, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration launched the New Horizons spacecraft on top of a Lockheed-Martin Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The New Horizon craft will travel to Pluto and its moon Charon in an effort to shed light on the body’s surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres.  The “flyby” studies will take place in 2015.

This is the first mission to Pluto.  Dr. Colleen Hartman, Deputy Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C, said “Today, NASA began an unprecedented journey of exploration to the ninth planet in the solar system.  Right now, what we know about Pluto could be written on the back of a postage stamp. After this mission, we'll be able to fill textbooks with new information."  NASA Launches New Horizons Space Craft on Mission to Pluto

Have you ever wanted a solution to a problem, and even though you feel like you have been asking over and over for help…it feels like no one is listening to you? Then one day there it is! Someone has a simple, easy to understand answer that provides you with the perfect solution to your dilemma!

Ironically on the day “A Couple of Chicks E-Distribution Marketing” officially launched our New Web Analytic Tool, I woke up to read a brilliant article The Long Tail and Analytics written by Rob Sullivan.  He addressed the burning issue that all SEM firms have…. “As a search engine marketer we need to not only focus on those high traffic more generic words, but also put some effort towards lower traffic, but more than likely higher converting keywords.” The left wing (and the right wing!) address Web Analytics and the solution

Promoting your site on a shoestring can be done - but you will have to roll up your sleeves. It takes time, smart thinking and a willingness to really be in communication with your audience. Take notes from The Cluetrain Manifesto:

"If you only have time for one clue this year, this is the one to get...

"These markets are conversations. Their members communicate in language that is natural, open, honest, direct, funny and often shocking. Whether explaining or complaining, joking or serious, the human voice is unmistakably genuine. It can't be faked.

"Most companies, on the other hand, only know how to talk in the soothing, humorless monotone of the mission statement, marketing brochure, and your-call-is-important-to-us busy signal. Same old tone, same old lies. No wonder networked markets have no respect for companies unable or unwilling to speak as they do. Website Marketing Strategy Tips

Link Guide

There’s a cool new tool available to help you build links.  It is called PRASE and in this article I will explain why it’s good at helping find sites.

Further I’ll look at some of the other features to see if there are other uses for this tool, such as competitive intelligence gathering and deep linking opportunities.

Really, this new tool offers so much more when you begin to look at what it can do.  And that’s what I’m writing about today.

So as I was scanning through my ever expanding list of feeds on the industry I came across a post that caught my eye.  It was about this new “link building tool” called PRASE.  PRASE stands for “Page Rank Assisted Search Engine” and while it is limited to some basic queries now, the people that put it together hope to turn it into a full fledged engine as time goes on. The Sage RSS Feed Reader

The Internet has become the most amazing tool for disseminating information and research.  It is used in hospital emergency rooms in an effort to diagnose disease.  It is used by companies to communicate and improve efficiency.  So what is the next big thing?

The next big thing will likely be Really Simple Syndication (RSS).  This will end up taking the place of newsletters because of its effectiveness.  There will be no need to give away your email address and risk unneeded spam.  You can narrow your interests and subscribe to specific information that interests you.

So how does it work and why would you want it?  The first thing you will need is a news-feed reader.  There are many vendors and technologies available.  The Opera browser has a built in news feed reader.  When you land on a XML page, Opera will ask if you want to add the feed. RSS Really Simple Syndication News Feeds and Feed Readers

Hybrid Cars are More Affordable than Ever with Tax Credits and Deductions

Hybrid Cars are More Affordable than Ever with Tax Credits and Deductions

Honda Hybrid Car

This may be the year to buy a hybrid car, truck or SUV.  New tax credits have made the energy efficient cars more appealing and will help offset the cost.  You may need to act quickly though because there are a limited number of credits available and for some car manufacturers the credit may last just a few months.

The credits are based on how efficient the car is compared to others in its class.  For instance, if a Lexus gets 16 miles per gallon (mpg) and the Lexus hybrid in the same class only gets 18mpg, the credit would not be that much.  But if you compare a Toyota Prius gas mileage to other vehicles in its class you may find the Prius beats the competition by a large margin, thus acquiring a larger tax credit. How to Choose a VoIP Phone Service and Products including Skype and Vonage

VoIP Phone

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) may be a great way to lower your phone bills.  It is definitely something you should consider if you make long distance calls.  This is what you need to know before you leave your regular phone service behind and begin the process of converting over to VOIP.

There are three ways to place a call using VOIP services.  ATA (analog telephone adapter) is the simplest and most common way users make VOIP calls.  This method allows you to connect your standard phone to your computer.  Your ATA adapter converts your phone signal to a digital signal that can be sent over the Internet.

Providers like Vonage and AT&T CallVantage are giving the adapters away free with their service.  This makes the service a turn-key operation.  Just pull the adapter out of the box, make the connections, load the software and begin making your calls.  How to Choose a VoIP Phone Service and Products including Skype and Vonage

The virus uses MSN Messenger client to send the infection to the entire user’s contact list, then connects the user’s computer to a second “botnet” server which can be further used to install more unauthorized software on the machine, such as phishing, hijacking, or keylogger software.

I just happened to stumble on a pretty interesting tool today.

I was trying to find a word for “People that are behind the times” for my previous blog post.  I did a couple of searches in Google without avail and eventually started scouring for a tool that did a reverse lookup on a word.  A tool where I would give the definition, and it would give me some words that matched that definition.  What I discovered was Onelook.com’s Reverse Dictionary.

Using subdomains to bypass Googles sandbox

Using subdomains to bypass Googles sandbox

Sub-domains

There was apparently some talk at SES Chicago on getting a site indexed in regular results a lot quicker.  This involved the use of an existing established similar domain (either one you own or one you bought) and use it to help you get a site out of the “sandbox.” The full forum post can be found here.

The technique is in the gray-to-black range. I wanted to mention that first, however if your site has been boxed for a while, this may be an alternative for you.  It also requires some coding, and assumes your site is built in PHP although I would also guess there is similar ASP code out there.

First lets look at how this works:  You have an established related domain and a new domain which is ‘boxed.  By establishing a subdomain on the established site and mirroring the content of the new domain there you will get the new subdomain indexed more quickly because it would inherit some of the trust of the main domain. How to protect yourself from the new Instant Messenger Worm

IMlogic

All of the major instant messaging networks have been hit with a new worm.  A URL is included with the message luring unsuspecting recipients to what they believe is Santa Claus site.  The bogus site infects the users system using a hidden rootkit.

The worm is spread by taking the client contact list from one computer and sending IM’s to those recipients.  The rootkit elements cloak the worm and then begin to try to disable security software (anti-virus software programs).  IM Logic says that “By operating as a rootkit, the process is hidden from all tools and anti-virus software.”

IM-Logic first brought this threat to the attention of the public.  According to the company the worm begins to log all of the keystrokes (becomes a key logger).  It also checks the network of the infected computer.  How to protect yourself from the new Instant Messenger Worm

Apple Safari

Microsoft will discontinue support for the Mac version of Internet Explorer.  The support will end on December 31st and the program will be removed from the MS (Microsoft) website Mactopia for downloads on January 31st 2006.  The initial announcement was made in June of 2003.

Many Mac users use Safari or Firefox as a browser.  This could be a problem because some websites have sections specifically designed for IE (Internet Explorer). I usually use Firefox but ran into a problem on a virtual tradeshow website.  A marketing website (Marketworks) I use also requires IE for some of its applications.

Apple is advising its users to start using Safari.  MS will not be offering any more security updates for IE.  Firefox on the other-hand has just offered an updated version 1.5 for the Mac and PC.  Already some websites require the latest version of IE or Firefox 1.5 to handle some operations.  Macintosh Users Urged to use Safari as Internet Explore Ends Support

Mozilla Foundation has issued a security advisory for its new Firefox version 1.5 browser.  This is what happens.  The browser will hang when the history includes a real long page title / location (like 2.5 million characters for instance).  The browser will hang when processing the long file.

The only way to correct this is to clear the Firefox history file (history.dat).  Researchers at PacketStorm security group has warned that the bug can result in hackers gaining control of a system, not just a denial of service (DoS) attack.

Mozilla claims there is no evidence of a security risk.  According to TechTree the advisory says that “there is no risk to users or their computers, beyond the browser's temporary un-responsiveness at start-up.”  Mozilla adds that there is no evidence found to back-up claims that variants of the DoS attack can cause an exploitable crash.  Possible Exploitable Flaw Found in New Firefox Browser Version

Yahoo! is planning on implementing a new VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) service to compete against Skype. Yahoo acquired Internet VoIP service Dialpad back in June.  In September eBay acquired VoIP operator Skype explaining that this could help facilitate sales, specifically international sales.  Buyers could actually converse with each other before bidding on an item.

The service will be available in 180 countries and will integrate Yahoo e-mail and instant messenger service features.  According to Networking Pipeline computer to computer calls will be free.  I used Dialpad when it was free back in 2001 and was able to call any phone number in the US for free using my computer.  Later Dialpad became a pay service.

The service should cost users $0.01 per minute for calls to the US using the Phone Out service.  It is expected to cost even less for calls to more than 30 countries including Argentina, Australia, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Korea. Picking a Good Web Host is Critical to Developing a Good Web Business

Who Is Your Web Host?

Choosing a good Internet Website Host could be one of the most important things you could do.  Is it going to be an easy set up?  Will they handle your domain Registration?  And the most important question is: How much will it cost?

Most web hosts will handle your domain registration.  Your job would be to figure out the best possible domain name like www.best-possible-name.com.  This is your URL where people can find your site.  Picking a host is just as important as this.

As your business / company expands, you may want added features on your website.  Maybe you will want a forum / bulletin board for your customers and potential customers to discuss your products.  You might want to have a personal Blog.  These are all features you should consider before choosing a web-host.  Picking a Good Web Host is Critical to Developing a Good Web Business

Firewall Software

Most security experts will tell you that you need three things to protect your computer from hackers.  You will first need a virus scanner to locate and remove viruses from your hard drive and email.  Grisoft makes a virus scanner that works well (AVG free version).  You will also need a program to scan your hard drive for spyware including Trojans and Keyloggers.

The third thing you need is a good firewall.  Windows XP comes with a built in firewall, but most experts argue that this firewall is not sufficient.  A couple popular firewalls are Grisoft and Zone Labs.  Grisoft bundles their firewall with their virus scanner for $50 per year.  Zone Labs will sell you their suite of security products for $40.  The basic Zone Alarm firewall is free.  I have used both and run into problems with both.  Basic Internet Protection with Firewalls  Virus Software and Spyware

More Problems and Security Holes Found in Microsoft Internet Explorer Browser

Opera Browser

New Internet Explorer (IE) vulnerabilities have been exposed by  Israeli hacker Matan Gillon.  This new hole gives phishers a way to scan the hard drives of Google Desktop users, when the IE browser is used.  Apparently there is a flaw in the way IE processes Web pages.

Malicious Websites could steal sensitive information like credit card numbers or passwords from your hard drive when visiting sites where the pages are created with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).  These “style sheets” are a quick method some developers use to make the site look uniform with the same fonts and headers on each page (along with other functional appearances).

The hole will allow thieves to scan the hard drives of Google Desktop users and even steal sensitive credit card information you may have stored in your emails (or elsewhere).  They can also take your stored password information. This can all be done by reading the Google Desktop Web interface itself.  More Problems and Security Holes Found in Microsoft Internet Explorer Browser

Most of the major technological breakthroughs in consumer electronics have been part of a larger breakthrough: converting analog information into digital information. The digital camera is one of the most remarkable instances of this shift and as the market for digital cameras grows so does the demand for camera accessories.

In the year 2000 digital cameras were the hottest item in consumer electronics and by the end of 2002 23 million U.S. households nearly 20 percent owned one. This year the new breed of digital SLR cameras are at the top of the Hot Holiday Gift Items list and sales are expected to increase by 13 percent. EZ Link Exchange / Sharing

EZ Link Exchange / Sharing

A popular SEO Tool

Initially, when the internet was in its infancy, webmasters used links as a way to complement the content of their website and to help their visitors find information. As the importance of links increased, the focus shifted away from helping the visitor to helping the webmaster.

This came about as a result of the Grandaddy of all search engines Google begun to implement its concept of “Page Rank” to classify websites in terms of their importance and perceived authority. Essentially Google defined links from any given website as a vote or endorsement of the site pointed to - the more significant the originating site, the more significant the endorsement. This in turn affects search engine results position as Google’s ranking algorithm gives significant weighting to this ratio. EZ Link Exchange / Sharing

Toyota Prius

Anyone buying a car should consider all of their options.  Should they concern themselves with gas mileage or do they have a large family and need a large vehicle?  If you have a long commute and drive solo or with a coworker to work, you should consider the hybrid option.

Why are hybrids becoming so popular?  There are a number of reasons.  First the carmakers have figured out how to capitalize on their efficiency. Toyota developed a very efficient technology, patented it, and now licenses it Ford Motor Co and Nissan Motor Corp.  Tax Deductions and Credits make the Hybrid Cars More Appealing

Even though gas prices have fallen, hybrid cars still look like an attractive investment.  Many purchasers have long commutes and figure that if they can save just a few bucks everyday the total savings over a year could add-up.

If a driver can save just 5 dollars a day on gas he can save $1300 a year (calculated on a 5 day work week).  According to the website How Stuff Works hybrids can get you 20 or 30 more miles per gallon.  Hybrids also emit less pollution.

For the short term the hybrid technology has won out.  Hydrogen cars are unpractical because it requires so much energy to produce the hydrogen.  Natural gas cars may be more practical in the future, especially if you can fill your car from home.  But what if you run out of gas away from your home?  How to Choose a Hybrid Car and Why

What is Wiki - A server Software that Allows Everyone to Contribute Content

Wikipedia Encyclopedia

Wiki is web server software that allows users to contribute content. Collaboration is the key to Wiki, which is designed as a powerful system for online communities to build web pages and web sites. Unlike blogs and forums, all users are allowed to contribute and edit existing content. Wiki is derived from the Hawaiian term "wiki wiki" meaning "quick". The concept behind a Wiki is that collaboration on projects will move it along quicker.

Wikis generally allow web pages to be written, edited and created collectively in a web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and simple text. Most Wikis are open, and allow any user the ability to edit the contents of a Wiki web page. While some say this opens the concept to abuse, Wiki moderators and self-policing in the Wiki sector appear to be taking hold. Wiki supporters generally feel that it is generally easier to correct mistakes than create the content from scratch. Wikipedia is a standing symbol of what many would consider a successful Wiki. Deep Linking and Hosted Marketing Pages

Deep Linking and Hosted Marketing Pages

Power Linking

The problem with Search Engine Optimization is that every body does it. Whenever a new technique gets into the public domain, it soon becomes overused. As the SE industry is itself becomes more and more competitive, increasing the pressure to deliver relevant, quality results, the search engines quickly devalue it for their algorithms, in order to maintain the credibility and usability of their search results.

Linking is a case in point. A central factor to “relevancy”, inward/outward links contribute significant weight to page rank and overall search ranking. However, as linking is now both hackneyed and abused, the SE’s are damping or reducing the weighting attached to certain types of links. As they become more sophisticated, the SE’s are able to differentiate between links for their relevance both to the page they are on and the page they point to.  Deep Linking and Hosted Marketing Pages

Google has just sent the Search Marketing world into a frenzy of hair pulling and nail biting. Its latest shake up of its algorithm has put paid to unrestrained link swapping. It had gone overboard like Meta tag stuffing before it. Even before this latest revision, all signs indicate that the Search Engines were beginning to devalue reciprocal links and forum signatures in their SERP’s .So what is a harried webmaster to do? Are backlinks still relevant to search rankings? If they still count, how do you acquire them without running afoul of the SE’s?

The answer to that is Link Trading. Link trading also known as Link Renting, is simply paying to have a link pointing to your site from another site, usually, with a high or higher page rank. In essence you are buying the linking site’s traffic and, if your own site is related, its search relevancy. Link Trading Myths Uncovered

Security and RSS Issues

Internet Security

Instant RSS is growing at a lightening speed. What was once only known as a "techie tool", RSS is becoming a tool that is continuously being used by the general population. Along with the good comes, the not so good. And while some have mentioned the emergence of RSS spam, where content publishers dynamically generate nonsensical feeds stuffed with keywords, the real concern relates to security. While an annoyance to the search engines, spam in RSS feeds pales in comparison to the possible security concerns that could be in RSS' future. Security and RSS Issues

Beware Is Your Website Generating System Really Turnkey?

Screen Shot

Many newbie internet marketers fall for the deceptively simple 'turnkey' website or internet marketing system. Unaware, they buy a turnkey system, perhaps even with a year of hosting, and expect the money to come pouring in within 30 minutes. The hours pass, and the days pass. They realize there was something not included in this 'turnkey' system: customers or a way to get them.

Ewen Chia recognized this problem and developed a brilliant system for the newbie marketer: a turnkey website with what might be called a traffic generation laboratory. The system itself is monetized from front-end to back-end, and the ad copy is superb, ensuring high conversion. You can see the introductory ad copy for yourself.

Ethanol  Alternative Energy Innovations Will Lower Gas Bills

Ethanol Alternative Energy Innovations Will Lower Gas Bills

Ethanol may lower Gas Bills

The history occurring in recent patent applications reveals more efficient production of Ethanol from Biomass using transgenomics.

Ethanol production requires nearly complete hydrolysis. Most of the commercial applications for cellulase enzymes represent higher value markets than the fuel market. For this reason, enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass to ethanol remains non-competitive.

Now, to degrade the cellulose in the lignocellulose complexes, the lignin must first be degraded. While lignin can be removed in chemi-mechanical processes, the chemi-mechanical processes are inefficient. Ligninase and cellulase enzymes, which are produced by various microorganisms, have been used to convert the lignins and cellulose, respectively, in plant biomass to fermentable sugars. However, the cost for these enzymes is expensive.  Ethanol  Alternative Energy Innovations Will Lower Gas Bills

A new news aggregator has been developed and is available for use in a beta version.  The new website, Inform.com, appears to have more bells and whistles than other aggregators including Yahoo, Google News and Topix but with fewer news sources.

Since the site is in beta more sources might be expected in the future, after all Google and others are continually adding new news sources.

News aggregators have become popular because it takes time for regular search engines to pick up on relevant news stories.  For instance, if you are looking for news story concerning a prom cancellation, some search engines will have the story buried on page 40060.  New Inform.com News Aggregator for News and Blogs Available in Beta

Our choice in Cell Phones

I finally broke down and bought a couple pre-paid cell phones.  This type of service is great for someone like me that does not use the cell phone much. It is also a great alternative for parents that worry about their kids running up a huge bill.

Parents can give their children an allotted of minutes / money to make calls.  After the allotment is used upthe parent can choose to recharge the phone either with a credit card or over the Internet.

Personally, I wanted a safety net just in case one of our cars broke down and I needed a tow, or for some other emergency.  We were paying about $75 per month for two phones with taxes and everything included.  I didn’t use it much and I might have been able to save a few bucks with a different plan, but not much.  Compare T-Mobile TracFone and Virgin Prepaid Cell Phones and Services

You can Hyperlink images or text.  You use the same procedure to hyperlink both.  Start by creating your document.  In a previous article we described how to create a webpage using FrontPage and FrontPage custom templates.

Google Expected to Dominate Tech World

Google Expected to Dominate Tech World

The old search method

Google is already the dominant search engine handling half of the searches worldwide. According to a new book by author Stephen Arnold, Google may become the most dominant tech company in the world.

Google has already challenged both Microsoft and Yahoo for the email business providing a lower cost alternative with its gmail.  They also offer a free service called Froogle that searches for products sold online.  For instance, if you are looking for a motorcycle, Froogle will list the prominent vendors and their prices.

Not only does Google provide the most relevant word searches, Google has also cataloged the image world, providing image searches.  Google is becoming the leader in news searches, providing relevant data on news stories.  If you have ever tried a simple web search for a news item you know how difficult it is to find that story.  Google Expected to Dominate Tech World

Google Inc. has introduced a completely new search engine devoted to blogs.  The Google search already indexes blogs, but the links to them are sometimes buried among other webpages.  The pages become outdated as the content changes so many surfers are taken to pages that have changed since the regular Google Search indexed it.

Google’s Blog Search will be devoted to blogs exclusively and will be serving up more relevant data.  According to Google, blog sites that syndicate posts via RSS or Atom feeds will automatically crawled by Google on a regular basis.  According to Chris Sherman at Search Engine Watch “Google defines blogs as sites that use RSS and other structured feeds and update content on a regular basis.”  Google’s Blog Search threatens Feedster Technorati and IceRocket

New Technology makes the Apple Computer Nano iPod Better

Apple Nano

Apple Computer unveiled its new iPod last week.  The new Nano plays music, displays photos and is extremely small.  Like computers, the size of the iPod is shrinking.  The new Nano is about the size of a deck of cards, but a little thinner.

Older iPods used a tiny hard drive to story songs.  The new Nano uses solid state memory technology to not only increase the speed and reduce the size, but to extend the battery life as well.  The Nano can last more than 14 hours on a single charge.

Since the Nano uses a chip rather than a moving hard drive devise, it is less prone to skipping.  Although dropping or jolting the older iPods has not caused much of a problem with skipping the Nano is immune to it.  New Technology makes the Apple Computer Nano iPod Better

Search Engine Optimization and Algorithms

Search Engine Optimization and Algorithms

Search Engine Algorithms

Search Engines have been critical in the development of the Internet.  What relevance would the Internet have if you were unable to find what you were looking for?  These Search sites house a multitude of servers that categorize and link every known website.  A user types in some keywords and the Search engine searches for relevant sites.

Early search engines relied on Meta Tags and keyword frequency of a webpage to determine relevance.  Many web designers were able to fool search engines by repeating the same word many times in an article and unseen metatags.

Google and other search engines began using a new more effective algorithm.  Instead of determining relevance by word frequency or meta-tags, they determined relevance by links.  The more quality links a site had, the more relevant it became.  The equation includes site traffic and other criteria.  Most search engines are very secretive about their particular algorithm. Search Engine Optimization and Algorithms

The world has changed over the past decade or so.  Creating web pages has gotten easier, faster and cheaper.  There are a few programs that use WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) web development technology.  The two most prominent are Microsoft Front Page and Macromedia Dreamweaver.  We will review some of the advantages to using MS FrontPage.

Before the advent of web developing tools, designers would use notepad to design their pages.  They would sit down at a computer and type the HTML code in by hand and drag the code into a browser to see what it would look like.  If you have ever done any programming you will know this is tedious.  Web Page Creation with FrontPage Dynamic Web Templates

A joint effort between the University of Texas and Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has created industrial-ready material made of nanotubes. The scientists reported this in the Friday edition of the journal Science.

The nanotubes are made of carbon and possess incredible strength. The sheets of nanotubes measure just a few times wider than the actual carbon atom, or 2 millionths-of-an-inch (2000 times thinner than paper).  A square mile of this will could weigh as little as 170 pounds.  The sheets are transparent, flexible and stronger than steel or high strength plastics.   Nanotechnology advances with new Nanotubes Automation Technology

Installing Office XP or Visual Studio makes System Vulnerable

New flaw found in IE when Office XP or Visual Studio is installed

Internet Explorer

A new security hole in Windows XP was reported on Wednesday by the French Security Incident Response Team (FrSIRT).  A file called Msdds.dll (Microsoft DDS Library Shape Control file) is put into the hard drive when Visual Studio 2002 or certain Microsoft (MS) Office XP products are installed.

Visual Studio is a developers program and is unlikely to be installed on most computers.  Those systems with Visual Studio Service pack 1 installed are not vulnerable. Some experts believe the file is not installed automatically during the standard MS Office Setup.  Neither Microsoft nor FrSIRT could say whether this file was installed by default with Office or Visual Studio.  Installing Office XP or Visual Studio makes System Vulnerable

Fireplaces Add Wonderful Home Decor

Fireplaces can be used for Home Decor not just heat

Fireplace elegance

Fireplaces and fireplace mantels are fast becoming a core feature in homes across the world as they add a real feature point to any formal or indeed casual living area. Funnily enough fireplaces have had a relatively short history, considering that fire itself has been around for hundreds of thousands of years.

Fireplaces only became common in 1367, when a gentleman while visiting in Rome, was dismayed at the fire pit in his room so he ordered his servants to build a chimney. They did so, adding his coat of arms above the two fireplace mantels. That fireplace is now part of history as ever since it has been the model of almost any room with a fireplace.  Fireplaces Add Home Decor

AMD introduces the new Dual Core Processor 3800+

Dual Core Architecture

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) introduced it’s new Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ on Monday. AMD has also cut prices of their earlier CPU models.

The new model is rated at 2.0 GHz and includes 512K of L2 cache memory.  Dual core is a way of splitting the processor so it can complete two tasks simultaneously at a faster speed.  Half of the processor can be rendering images while the other is crunching numbers or coordinates for a game.  The processor is quicker because it can multi-task, according to the company.

The price drop means that the new processor will sell for $394 each for lots of 1000.  Compare this to the 2.4 GHz 4800+ dual-core processor which sells for $902 each (previously $1,001) for lots of 1000 chips. AMD New Dual Core Processor Model 3800+

The iPod

Apple iPOD

PASADENA, CA - Back in April of this year, my family joined the 21st century when we purchased an iPod.  We were in the Apple Store, which I started going to frequently after I purchased a Mini Mac to play with, and we noticed that our oldest son was really interested in an iPod.  Since it was right after his birthday, we thought that an iPod Mini might be a good idea, and he was quite enthusiastic about it.  Since I had just bought a Mini Mac recently, I was motivated to buy another Apple product (the Mini Mac is really cool, more on that another time).
