Autism Diagnosis Available At Birth By Examining the Placenta - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Diagnosis Available At Birth By Examining the Placenta - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Placenta Magnified

Yale researchers believe that they can diagnose autism at birth by identifying a placental abnormality, specifically the presence of trophoblast inclusions, which is a marker for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  Autism is a developmental disorder that has a profound effect on socialization, communication, learning and other behaviors.  According to the researchers, one in every 200 children is diagnosed with a autism.

Harvey J. Kliman, M.D., believes the best time to make the diagnosis is at birth.  Kilman is the senior author of the study, and a research scientist in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at the Yale School of Medicine.  "By serendipity, at a dinner party I happened to sit next to George M. Anderson, a research scientist in the Yale Child Study Center who had access to many cases of children with ASD. We realized that by working together we might be able to determine if this placental abnormality could be a useful clinical marker." ADHD Drugs Sent 2500 Children to Hospital - Emergency Visits Include Heart Attacks Palpitations and Sudden Death - Symptoms for ADHD

Ritalin

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that more than 2,500 children went to the hospital emergency room in 2004 after taking a stimulant used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  According to the CDC, most were admitted because of an accidental overdose.

About 1 in 4 of these children experienced serious heart or blood pressure events including palpitations, chest pain, or fainting. Regulators are considering stronger warnings on the drugs because of the possible link to sudden death and heart risks.  In some cases, the children accidentally took someone else’s medication, according to Rob Waters of Bloomberg.  ADHD Drugs Sent 2500 Children to Hospital - Emergency Visits Include Heart Attacks Palpitations and Sudden Death - ADHD Symptoms

5 Ways to Rebuild Confidence in Kids with ADHD

5 Ways to Rebuild Confidence in Kids with ADHD

Health

Children with ADHD are often misunderstood and in trouble even though they are just “being themselves.”  This experience often leads to a loss of self-confidence.  Imagine a child with ADHD trying to keep his brain activated during a boring activity by wiggling around or making noises.  He doesn’t mean to be disruptive, but boy does he when he gets in trouble! “That boy is trouble!”

Or imagine a girl who is so busy day dreaming to keep her brain activated that she has not heard the teacher’s instructions or that she has forgotten to turn in her assignment. “That girl is such a space cadet!”  These messages may not be spoken aloud, and yet to our children they come through loud and clear.  How can we as parents re-build our children’s self-confidence? How can we inoculate our children against harmful messages?  5 Ways to Rebuild Confidence in Kids with ADHD

Lead Paint

Researchers from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center believe that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is possibly caused by both genetics and environment.  The study will be first presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting today, May 1st in San Francisco.

“This study shows that certain groups of children have an increased sensitivity to environmental exposures,” said the studies lead author, Tanya Froehlich, M.D., a physician at Cincinnati Children’s. “More studies like this one are needed to help set exposure standards that adequately protect the most susceptible members of society.”  ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may be caused by Genetics and Environmental Toxins

For people with Adult ADHD, focusing long enough to get even a small task done--if it is boring--can seem almost impossible! Here’s what I do when I have to focus on something that I really don't like to do, especially sitting at my desk.

Adult ADHD makes it hard to try to sit still and do something--but now and then you just have to. Here's a couple tricks I've learned to get boring tasks done.

First, when I come in and get started, I've trained myself to immediately have a certain pattern of activity that happens. My brain automatically associates that pattern of activity with, "Now we're going to sit down and do something."

It’s simply a habit. If you have Adult ADHD try this sometime you have to do paperwork or organize something:  Adult ADHD: The Magic Egg Timer Trick

Kids with ADHD often have an amazing creative capacity and high energy, which can interfere with the development of social skills. Poor impulse control and hyperactivity can sabotage school success and family peace, which often leads to low self-confidence.

Ask any kid with ADHD what the worst thing on earth is and you will often hear, “Boredom!” Do you need help teaching your child new ways to cope without getting bored?

The surprising answer is to play games! When I was a kid, we got together every afternoon to play games outside. There was always a range of ages with the older kids teaching the younger kids how to play. Five Ways to Transform ADHD By Playing Games

Parents of children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) express frustration when their children experience emotional meltdowns for seemingly no reason.

Sandy Halpern, mother of two children with ADHD, describes a weekly event. “I’ll ask my boys to stop playing with LEGOS or X-Box to come eat dinner. The next thing I know, they are calling me names, throwing things and stomping through the house.”

We have found three effective ways to turn meltdowns to your advantage. First, it is critical to first defuse the situation. Instead of engaging in a screaming match yelling outrageous punishments and hurtful words, remain calm and unemotional.”  ADHD Parenting—Defusing the Atomic Child - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Parents Offer Helpful Tips

Transdermal Patches

The Food and Drug Administration approved the transdermal skin patch that will deliver the drug methylphenidate, which is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant.  It was approved on April 6th for treating children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children ranging from 6 to 12 years old.  The commercial drug name for the methylphenidate patch is called Daytrana and is the first transdermal skin patch for treating ADHD.  Daytrana is manufactured for Shire US. Inc., by Noven Pharmaceuticals Inc.

"Daytrana provides an alternative route of administration for methylphenidate in children with ADHD,” said Dr. Galson who is the FDA’s Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.  ADHD – Daytrana Methylphenidate Patch approved by the FDA for Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children

FDA Panel Recommends “Clearer” Labels on ADHD ADD Drugs Today – Last Month Another Panel Recommended “Black Box” Warnings On Ritalin and Adderall

Clearer Labels Recommended

A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pediatric advisory panel recommended strong warnings on drugs used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD) today, but stopped short of the black-box warnings recommended by another FDA advisory panel on drug safety last month. The panel heard about cases in which children experienced frightening hallucinations while using the medications.  These hallucinations often involved bugs and snakes.

The panel heard from psychiatrists and other experts that these drugs fill a critical need for treating mental health problems in children, and they feared the black box warnings would scare patients away from treatment.  The black-box warnings are the strongest warnings issued by the FDA.

There have been concerns about heart attack and stroke since most of the medications are stimulants and raise blood pressure.  Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar wrote in the LA Times that “Members of the pediatrics committee said such a drastic warning is not needed for children, since they have a very low overall risk of heart problems.”  The committee said that children with heart problems should not take the drugs.  FDA Panel Recommends “Clearer” Labels on ADHD ADD Drugs Today – Last Month Another Panel Recommended “Black Box” Warnings On Ritalin and Adderall

The pharmaceutical company, Cephalon Inc, is going through the motions of legitimizing the sale of Sparlon for the treatment of ADHD even though its active ingredient, modafinil, has been heavily promoted and sold under the name Provigil, for off-label treatment of ADHD by Cephalon for years.

Last October, the FDA sent an "approvable" letter to Cephalon for the pediatric use of Sparlon pending a March 23, 2006, meeting of the Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee to review the drug’s approval.

Modafinil-based Provigil is currently only approved for narcolepsy, sleep apnea and shift work sleep disorder, according to the FDA.  However, it is estimated that half of all Provigil prescriptions are written for off-label use.  Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Just What Kids Need - Sparlon - Another ADHD Drug

The FDA's Drug Safety & Risk Management Advisory Committee held a two-day meeting last month on February 9th and 10th to review adverse events linked to the widely prescribed ADHD drugs that included reports of sudden death, high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes among adults and children taking the medications.

In the US, between 1999 through 2003, the FDA had reports of 24 deaths among patients who took the amphetamine, Adderall, the staff report said. Eleven more deaths were reported among patients using other drugs in the amphetamine class, it noted.

During the same time frame, another 16 deaths were reported in patients who took Ritalin or other drugs known as methylphenidates, the report stated. ADHD Drugs - Who Said What At Last Month's Hearings

“Our society viewed with loathing those who 'pushed' stimulant drugs on children," says child psychiatrist Dr Peter Breggin. "Yet today, there are more children taking Ritalin and amphetamines from doctors than ever received them from illegal pushers,” he says.

“Parents and teachers and even doctors have been badly misled by drug company marketing practices,” he warns. “Drug companies have targeted children as a big market likely to boost profits and children are suffering as a result."

The marketing campaign referred to by Dr Breggin has proven to be extremely successful  At a February 10, 2006, FDA advisory committee hearing, it was reported by Dr Andrew Mosholder, a medical officer in the FDA's Office of Drug Safety, that about 2.5 million children in this country between the age 4 and 17, currently take ADHD drugs. A government survey found 9.3% of 12-year-old boys, and 3.7% of 11-year-old girls are on the drugs, he said.  ADHD  -  Cash Cow For Pharma - Possible Lawsuits Involving Drugs - Ritalin and Adderall and Other Treatments Questioned

Anti-Psychotic Drugs taken by Children have drastically Increased – Are all these kids Bipolar and Schizophrenic?

The A.D.D. Book

A study reported that there was a huge increase in the amount of children taking anti-psychotic prescription drugs in recent years.  These drugs are often used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD) as well as other behavior problems.  The problem is that the psychotic drugs have not been proven to work for a many of these children taking the drugs.  The study was first reported in the March-April edition of the journal Ambulatory Pediatrics.

Dr. William Cooper, a pediatrician with the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and lead author of the study made a statement of concern, "because it looks like these medications are being used for large numbers of children in a setting where we don't know if they work."  Anti-Psychotic Drugs taken by Children have drastically Increased – Are all these kids Bipolar and Schizophrenic?

ADHD A Complete Authoritative Guide

Some of the top-selling drugs of all time are those prescribed to treat attention deficit disorders. Drug companies have physicians in every field of medicine pushing these medications and dole out millions of dollars worth of free samples each year to make sure they are passed out like candy.

A new ADHD drug is set to come on the market that supposedly can keep people awake for days at a time with no problems. Just what we needed, especially for hyper little kids.

I wonder if this means they will remain calm as they sit wide-awake watching TV and playing video games for days while the rest of the family sleeps.

The drug Sparlon is manufactured by Cephalon and is a clone of Provigil, another drug already on the market. Sparlon contains modafinil, the same exact active ingredient contained in  Provigil which is approved for the treatment of patients with narcolepsy, sleep apnea and shift work sleep disorder, according to the FDA.  ADHD - Why Drug Companies want FDA Approval for Treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Capitol in Washington DC

Heavy-hitters from across the country are heading to Washington this month to debate representatives of the pharmaceutical industry during FDA hearings on the controversy surrounding the over-prescribing of attention deficit drugs to children.

The International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology (ICSPP) will be represented by five of the leading experts on attention deficit disorders at the FDA's Pediatric Advisory Committee's meeting on March 22, to include Dr Fred Baughman, Dr Peter Breggin, Dr S DuBose Ravenel, Dr Grace Jackson, MD, and Dr David Stein. These experts combined have authored hundreds of books, papers and reports on attention deficit disorders.*

A recent six month study from John Hopkins Children’s Center along with two other pediatric hospitals found that children with Positive airway pressure (PAP) have a hard time using the equipment on a regular basis.  This research study was first reported in the March issue of Pediatrics.

The PAP mask which allows for air to flow steadily in the air passage way improves the health of obstructive sleep apnea patients.  If the child fails to use the equipment on a regular basis the health benefits are not seen.  Young children also can have breathing problems during sleep that can affect how they behave during the day and at school.  Children with Sleep Apnea have a hard time using the PAP machine

ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Concerta Prescription Drug delays release of Methylphenidate may be less Addictive

Concerta

Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital are looking at alternative medications that will delay the release of the methylphenidate used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  By delaying the release of medication it will be less addictive and not be abused.  The report was first reported in the March 2006 issue of The American Journal of Psychiatry.

"We know that drugs that cause euphoria are potentially abusable, and euphoria requires rapid delivery to the brain. Using sophisticated PET scan imaging, we were able to examine the rate of delivery of both rapid- and delayed-release formulations of methylphenidate and correlate those results with how the drugs felt to study volunteers," said Thomas Spencer, MD, of the Massachusetts General Hospital Pediatric Psychopharmacology Unit, and an associate professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.  He is also the lead author of this project. "The ability to show that rate of brain delivery may determine abuse potential is important to our understanding of the safety of different formulations."  ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Concerta Prescription Drug delays release of Methylphenidate may be less Addictive

Ritalin

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel voted 8-7 to require “black box” warnings on Ritalin and other stimulant drugs used for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).  The black-box warning is the strongest warning that can be placed on a product that has been approved by the FDA.

The FDA did this after hearing about the deaths of 25 people.  Of these deaths, 19 were children.  According to a CBS report, doctors prescribe these drugs to about 2 million children and 1 million adults a month.  The drugs that will receive the new warning are Adderall (made by Shire Pharmaceuticals), Ritalin (made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp.), Concerta (made by Johnson & Johnson), Methylin (made by Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals), and Metadate (made by UCB).  Also the generic versions of Ritalin will need to carry the warning.  FDA Panel Recommends Black Box Warning on ADHD Drugs - Ritalin and Generics included

Fish Oil

Researchers are starting a 6 month trial in Norfolk to see if fish oil supplements will improve behavior and learning skills.

Their will be 38 students from Eaton Hall Special School that will participate in this study.  These students are between the ages of 10 years through 16 years old.  They all have either a learning or behavior disability such as Dyslexia, Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD).

The researchers suspect that these children may have a Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency.  By correcting this, they hope to see improvement in learning and behavior in these children.  At any time the parents of these children can stop taking the fish oil supplement.  Special Needs Students start Fish Oil trial

Fish Oil Supplements

A study currently being done at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, is having ADHD children putting fish oil spread on bread.  A total of 90 children aged 8 – 13 diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) were selected for this study.

A total of 30 of these children were told to eat a chocolate fish oil spread on bread each day.  After a 3 month time period, 20 out of 30 of these children showed significant improvement when a psychological re-evaluation was performed.  The rest of the children did not have any treatment.  Although the results are exciting the researchers caution that this is preliminary findings and more research will be needed.

Another study that reinforces fish oil as an alternative treatment to ADHD was an extensive study of children in Durham, U.K.   The study covered school age children that were behind a year from their peers, many had ADHD.  The results showed dramatic improvements in speech, behavior, and in reading.  The fatty acid supplements were a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 and are essential for the body to function well.  Fish Oil alternative treatment to Ritalin for ADHD

What If There Really Isn’t Anything Wrong with ADHD Children?

What If There Really Isn’t Anything Wrong with ADHD Children?

Authors Book

August 31, 2005 (Washington, D.C.) – Robbie Raffino used to rise every day like most eight-year-olds. He’d wipe the sleepiness from his eyes, throw on shorts and shirt that don’t match and eat cereal while watching cartoons.

But the innocence ended there. He’d swallow his Ritalin, hop on the school bus and enter a world where teachers, therapists and psychiatrists would try to “fix what is wrong” with him.

Children like Robbie—who have tremendous energy, don’t respond to classroom lectures, prefer independent work and are natural leaders—are often diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Unfortunately, most “experts” begin with the premise that these children suffer from a disorder, meaning an “abnormal” functioning of the brain. This flawed premise leads to a natural conclusion—that society must change these children to make them learn and behave like everyone else.

It's 12:30 a.m and you force yourself off the computer and head for bed. Your alarm will go off in exactly 6 hours so you know you've got to get some good solid rest.

As you trudge into the bathroom to wash up, you begin to get more awake rather than sleepy. The tang of the toothpaste in your mouth and the roughness of the bristles jar your oral senses. As you search for your softest, most comfy pajamas, you realize you've left them in the washing machine and have nothing remotely as pleasant to sleep in. So you grab your 2nd favorite pair of PJs. But they just don't feel right. The tag on the collar starts to make your skin itch and ache at the same time. You begin to scratch. And scratch. AD/HD and Hypersensitivities

ADHD Not Just For Kids Anymore: Adult ADHD

Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder treatments

Terry Matlen

Up until the mid 1980's, it was widely believed by physicians and psychologists that ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) was outgrown by the time a child hit adolescence.  Surprise!

Though many clinicians still hold on to this belief, it is now accepted by many in the medical community that childhood ADHD does indeed continue into adulthood. As a matter of fact, the DSM-IV, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, describes just that.
