Reverse Aging - Lamin A Protein May Hold Key To Fountain of Youth - Anti-Aging Treatment May Stem From Lamin-A Research into HGPS

Reverse Aging - Lamin A Protein May Hold Key To Fountain of Youth - Anti-Aging Treatment May Stem From Lamin-A Research into HGPS

Lamin A Structure

Since Ponce de Leon, we have been looking for the fountain of youth, but now researchers may have found it in the protein lamin.  When people grow old, the walls of the nuclei lose their their perkiness and round shape.  The cells become wrinkled and weak.

The weakened cell membrane allows damaging agents to get inside the nucleus to the cell’s DNA.  Studies have shown that these agents can cause mutations which lead to physical aging. NCI researchers Paola Scaffidi, PhD, and Tom Misteli, PhD, while studying the cause of  Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, were able to “reverse” the abnormalities seen in cells by correcting the defects associated with the protein lamin-A.

The study, which appears in the March 6 2005 Nature Medicine, examined the disease called Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS). HGPS is an extremely rare genetic disease that accelerates the aging process to about seven times the normal rate.  Reverse Aging - Lamin A Protein May Hold Key To Fountain of Youth - Anti-Aging Treatment May Stem From Lamin-A Research into HGPS

Silicone Implant

A new study found that breast implants do not cause breast cancer.  Researchers from the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center say this is the longest follow-up study to date of cancer incidence among women with silicone breast implants.  This study shows that having implants does not put women at an increased risk for cancer, but actually shows to be associated with a decreased breast cancer risk.

The researchers studied 3,486 Swedish women with cosmetic breast implants implanted for the first time from 1965 to 1993.  The Swedes have the best cancer registries in the world, going back almost 50 years, according to Joseph McLaughlin, Ph.D.  McLaughlin is a cancer epidemiologist with the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and the International Epidemiology Institute.  McLaughlin worked with colleagues at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden to determine breast cancer risk.  Breast Cancer Risk Not Increased With Implants - Swedish Study Found This Silicone Implants - Cosmetic Surgery Does Not Cause Cancer

Laser technology may be used in the treatment of severe acne, atherosclerotic plaque, and cellulite.  Researchers from the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) will present their results at the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) 26th Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.

The researchers studied the effects of lasers on both human and pig fat to find which laser would not damage the outer skin.  They used a Free-Electron Laser facility at Jefferson Lab of a wavelength of infrared laser light with a range of 800-2600 nanometers.  They narrowed in the laser selection by first testing different lasers on water.  The researchers narrowed in there laser wavelengths that worked best with fat.  These wavelengths are 915, 1210, and 1720 nm.  Lasers Blasts away Fat – Possible treatments for Acne, Clogged Arteries and Cellulite Removal

One is an electro-static ‘hair chair’ that encourages hair to re-grow.  At this time the FDA has not given the approval for hair re-growth.  It has been used in Canada to help chemotherapy patients re-grow their hair.  The chair looks like a hair dryer that you sit underneath.  The process is painless.  It is supposed to takes 4 – 8 months with treatments of around 15 minutes each week.  If it works you can expect to see more of these in the United States.  At this time this device is only in a few cities.  Baldness – Laser Light Therapy and Electrostatic Pulse Technology may help Grow Hair Back

Botox Treatment

Scientists from the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California have found a way to increase the potency of botulinum neurotoxin (Botox) which would be safer and could last longer.

The new combination of Botox could lead to lower price per dose because it would be a lower dose.  Lower doses of the botulinum neurotoxin could help to avoid a complication that can occur with the immune system.  The scientists also say the new combination of botulinum neurotoxin cosmetic treatment of wrinkles could last longer too.

Botulinum neurotoxin is one of the most deadly poisons and considered a possible bioterrorist weapon.  However in the medical world, it has helped treat migraine headaches, lazy eyes, and excessive sweating.  People treated for these other conditions had a side effect of wrinkles disappearing.  This happened because of the neurotoxin caused a paralyzing effects on the muscles.  That is when Botox came to be well known for the treatment of wrinkles.  Botox Treatment – Cosmetic Procedure for Wrinkle Removal could have Lower Doses, be Safer and more Effective

Chemical Peels that are performed at a plastic surgeons office can not only offer softer skin, but can also help prevent other problems.  A chemical peel can help prevent acne as well as remove layers of sun damaged and discolored skin patches.  Wrinkles can be reduced and sometime eliminated after going through a series of chemical peels.  It won’t replace other cosmetic procedures if you want to get rid of the wrinkles.  Chemical peels help the skin to tolerate outside elements.  A person with acne problems can have an easier time controlling outbreaks.

Having the cosmetic procedure of a chemical peel done by a professional plastic surgeon can cost on an average of $607 according to a 2004 report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The chemical peel can go up in price as there are different kinds as well as different intensity of treatment depending on the skin damage.  A chemical peel can also remove some pre-cancerous skin patches. Cosmetic Wrinkle Removal

Radiesse and Restylane are injected fillers that are used to help remove wrinkles and fill out the face.  They are becoming more popular because the injections can last from six months all the way up to two years.  Another reason that Radiesse and Restylane might be a better treatment than Botox is that they do not paralyze the muscles to remove wrinkles.

Botox still is extremely popular procedure for wrinkles in the face, as the cost for this procedure is less expensive to go through.  Botox treatments can work from four to nine months with an average of six months for touch ups.  The average national cost for a Botox treatment is $387 according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  Plastic Surgery Procedure – Radiesse, Restylane and Botox help with Cosmetic Wrinkle Removal

List of Treatments for Baldness or Loss of Hair – Hair Transplantation Compared to Rogaine and Propecia – Depends on Cause of Alopecia

Hair

There are several treatments for hair loss, including hair transplantation, over the counter and prescription drugs, ointments and creams.  Some people take no action to hide or treat their hair-loss while others may take minor steps like wearing a hat or wig, changing their hairstyle, and makeup. Both men and women can experience hair loss.

There are some other steps that can be taken including drugs and surgery.  You may want to talk to your regular doctor before you seek a specialist. They may have talked to others and may have recommendations for alopecia (another term for hair loss).

There are two types of alopecia.  The first condition, androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness, affects one third of men and women.  Typically, it is permanent, and you may experience hair loss as early as your teens.  This hair loss begins at the temple or crown of your head and the end result could either be partial or complete baldness.  List of Treatments for Baldness or Loss of Hair – Hair Transplantation Compared to Rogaine and Propecia – Depends on Cause of Alopecia

Dental Implants Procedures in One Hour - How Much Do They Cost and How Long Do They Take - Permanent Solution For Lost Teeth Dentures and Bridges

Dental Implant

Dental implants may be a better alternative for denture wearers. The problem is that implants take a very long time to complete and can be very expensive.  Since most insurance plans do not cover the expense, most individuals in the past have turned to dentures and bridges to replace lost teeth.

Implants start at around $500 and can go up to $6,000 per tooth.  Most implants will cost between $1,200 and $2,000.  There are reasons why the cost could go up, so you will want to choose a dentist familiar with many restorative options.

Usually, anyone that can undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for an implant.  Patients will need healthy gums and enough bone to hold the abutment that attaches to the crown.  Patients with diabetes, heart disease or other chronic disorders need to be evaluated on an individual basis. Dental Implants Procedures in One Hour - How Much Do They Cost and How Long Do They Take - Permanent Solution For Lost Teeth Dentures and Bridges

Teeth Whitening - downfalls to doing it at Home

Teeth Whitening - downfalls to doing it at Home

Before and After BrightSmile Treatment

With all the toothpaste products out that whiten teeth, why would a person get it done professionally?  There are many reasons why going to your dentist to have your teeth whitened is a better choice.

One reason is that a trip to the dentist or dental whitening professional should make sure you’re your teeth and gums are healthy and able to be whitened.  Before any whitening is performed it should be determined if your teeth are up for the brightening.

Another benefit to going to the professional for the teeth whitening treatment is that you can get dramatic results in an hour’s time.  You can see as many as 14 shades brighter teeth.  If you were to bleach your teeth with a chemical treatment using a tray method at home, it could take numerous treatments to get 6 shades lighter.  This treatment can cause you to have sensitive teeth afterwards, depending on the chemicals that the manufacturer uses.  If you use whitening strips, it takes 7 – 30 days to achieve up to 4 shades lighter.  The downfall to strips is that they miss the gaps in between the teeth and your teeth can come out patchy looking.  The toothpaste method you can expect in a month’s time up to 2 shades lighter.  The downfall is that you will quickly loose the whitening if you stop using the toothpaste.  Teeth Whitening - downfalls to doing it at Home

The Miracle of Botox - An Introduction (Part 1)

Botox Treatment

Injections of Botox, one of the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures on the market today, are used for the reduction or elimination of facial wrinkles caused by dynamic, or hyper-functional, muscles (muscles that get a lot of use). Those are the wrinkles that form when you contract your facial muscles to form a frown, squint, grimace, smile, or other type of expression, resulting in those tell-tale lines around your eyes, mouth, or nose, and across your forehead. Botox can be very effective in temporarily getting rid of some, but not all, of your facial wrinkles. But before we talk about which wrinkles Botox can banish, let's find out more about this popular substance.  The Miracle of Botox - An Introduction (Part 1)

Which wrinkles and lines bother you the most? Are these lines and wrinkles the type that are best eliminated using Botox?

If you choose to eliminate only the wrinkles that can be treated with Botox, will any of the remaining ones still leave you unsatisfied with your appearance? For example, if you want both your frown lines and marionette lines removed, you will likely need a different cosmetic procedure to have the marionette lines eliminated.

It should point out that Botox injections work best on crow's-feet (wrinkles radiating from the outside corners of the eyes), worry lines (horizontal forehead lines), and frown lines (vertical lines, also called glabellar lines, that appear between the eyebrows). These are wrinkles that are typically caused by chronic contractions of the muscles under or adjacent to these areas of the face. The Miracle of Botox - Effect on Wrinkles (Part 2)

Smoking Increases Risk of Webbed or extra Toes and Fingers – Cosmetic Surgery

Smoking Risks

There is a new reason for pregnant women to quit smoking.  According to a study authored by Dr. Benjamin Chang, of the University of Pennsylvania, smoking during pregnancy will greatly increase the risk of having a baby with toe or finger deformities.

The study included 6.8 million births in the United States during 2001 and 2002. There were 5,171 children with either webbed or missing fingers or toes, and some children with extra toes or fingers, born to women that smoked during their pregnancy.  These mothers did not report other health factors including heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure.

According to Dr. Chang "The results of this study were interesting. We suspected that smoking was a cause of digital anomalies but didn't expect the results to be so dramatic."  Smoking Increases Risk of Webbed or extra Toes and Fingers – Cosmetic Surgery

Plastic surgery is no longer just for Hollywood.  Plastic surgery is at an all time high among the masses of regular people as well.

Plastic surgery also called cosmetic surgery, ranges from major surgical procedures to minimally-invasive procedures like Botox injections.  It is also important to consider that the more complicated the operation, you will want the surgery in a hospital setting.  If you are having the operation in a clinic setting it may or may not be up to code.  You have a higher risk of infection and complications.  Infection is one of the risks anyone has when going in for surgery.  Cosmetic Surgery and Procedures by Plastic Surgeons on the Rise
