Positive Link Between Glaucoma and Type 2 Diabetes - Most Common Form of Both Diseases are Related According to Study

Positive Link Between Glaucoma and Type 2 Diabetes - Most Common Form of Both Diseases are Related According to Study

Eye screening

New research has discovered a link between the most common type of glaucoma and type 2 diabetes.  Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG), the most common form of glaucoma, is “positively associated” with the most common form of diabetes.

Dr. Louis Pasquale, M.D. says “The study supports the notion that type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of glaucoma.  While obesity fuels the type 2 diabetes epidemic, it appears that factors unrelated to obesity contribute to the positive association between type 2 diabetes and glaucoma. We were surprised to find this. Our study had a large enough sample to allow us to focus on type-2 diabetes only and to study its relation to newly diagnosed POAG cases. We were also able to correct for other factors that could contribute to glaucoma. Our work suggests, but in now way proves, that factors other than lifestyle behavior contributing to insulin resistance could lead to elevated intraocular pressure and glaucoma."  Pasquale is lead author of the study and co-director of the Glaucoma Service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) and an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.  Complete Article

Eye Health - Eating Habits Related to Macular Degeneration - Age Related AMD Linked To Bad or High-Glycemic Carbohydrate Food Consumption

Health

There may be a link between Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and healthy eating habits, according to researchers at Tufts University, and colleagues.  The study by Allen Taylor, PhD, director of the Laboratory for Nutrition and Vision Research at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA), indicates that a diet of “quality” carbohydrates can limit the risk of AMD.

The researchers analyzed data from a sub-group of participants in the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) who were enrolled in the Nutrition and Vision Program.  They evaluated data for a 10 year period examining the total carbohydrate intake and the dietary glycemic index statistics. This index is a measure of the quality of overall dietary carbohydrate. Eye Health - Eating Habits Related to Macular Degeneration - Age Related AMD Linked To Bad or High-Glycemic Carbohydrate Food Consumption

Fusarium keratitis Eye Infection Symptoms - Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc May Be A Cause - CDC Investigating - Discard Immediately

Health

It appears the outbreak of the Fusarium keratitis infection outbreak may be from the used Bausch & Lomb Inc.'s newest lens cleaner, ReNu with MoistureLoc.  The Centers for Disease Control released a report Friday that confirms Bausch & Lomb’s explanation that an ingredient unique to their cleaning solution can inadvertently prevent proper disinfection of contact lenses in instances of poor hygiene.

The CDC reports that out of the 130 confirmed cases, 125 reported wearing contact lenses and 118 were able to identify which contact lens solution(s) they had used during the month before onset of infection.  The CDC says that 64% reported using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc alone, while 12% said they used it with another product.  The report says that only 7% used another unspecified Bausch & Lomb solution, and 18% reported using only products other than MoistureLoc, from various manufacturers.  Fusarium keratitis Eye Infection Symptoms - Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc May Be A Cause - CDC Investigating - Discard Immediately

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University discovered the Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor Type 2 (PAI-2) protein in a variety of cell types.  The PAI-2 was found in skin and in tissue covering the eye.  The discovery of the PAI-2 may lead to new treatments for outside eye surfaces including dry eyes and eye infections.

The lead researchers are Mina Massaro-Giordano, M.D., of the University of Pennsylvania’s Scheie Eye Institute, and Marcella Macaluso, Ph.D., of the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research at Temple University.  They first published the results of this study in the Nature’s journal called Cell Death and Differentiation.  They have also shared the findings at the annual meeting of the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in Florida.  Dry Eyes – Researchers find Protein plays a role in Dry and Infected Eyes

Eye

Researchers from Japan studied how simvastatin drug would effect blood circulation in the eye.  The study was first reported in the Archives of Ophthalmology.  While the results from this study are from healthy men, it potentially could lead to a new treatment for prevention of Diabetic Retinopathy which is caused by a lack of blood circulating in the eye and can eventually lead to blindness.

The researchers studied 12 healthy men ranging in age 19 through 23.  They gave half the participants a 20 milligram dose of simvastatin and the other half given a placebo over seven days.  Diabetic Eye Health – Statin Drugs May help Improve Blood Circulation possibly preventing Diabetic Retinopathy and Blindness

Fusarium keratitis Eye Infection Spreads to 33 States – CDC Still Investigating Bausch & Lomb Lens Cleaner ReNu with MoistureLoc

Fusarium keratitis Eye Infection Spreads to 33 States – CDC Still Investigating Bausch & Lomb Lens Cleaner ReNu with MoistureLoc

The Eye Ball

The cause of the recent Fusarium keratitis outbreak is not yet confirmed, but authorities say that two thirds of the patients used Bausch & Lomb Inc.'s newest lens cleaner, ReNu with MoistureLoc.  Some eye care professionals have stopped issuing the solutions after word that the infection has spread to 33 states and territories.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed at least one case in each of the following states: AR, AZ, CA, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, NC, ND, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, PR, TN, TX and VT.   The agency says that one reason for the increased number of cases may reflect reclassification of existing reports that had been under investigation.

The CDC reports that there are 122 confirmed cases, 15 possible cases and 60 cases still under investigation. They want to remind the public that the risk of contracting fungal keratitis from contact lenses remains extremely low.  A spokesperson said that they are “investigation into identifying whether there are specific factors that may have placed people at risk for developing fungal keratitis, including hygiene practices, overnight contact lens wear and specific solutions used.” Fusarium keratitis Eye Infection Spreads to 33 States – CDC Still Investigating Bausch & Lomb Lens Cleaner ReNu with MoistureLoc

All Laser LASIK Eye Surgery Safer – Both Blade and Laser Equally Effective In Treating Nearsighted Farsighted and Astigmatism

All Laser LASIK Eye Surgery Safer – Both Blade and Laser Equally Effective In Treating Nearsighted Farsighted and Astigmatism

All Laser Equipment

The Mayo Clinic reports that femtosecond (bladeless) and mechanical microkeratome LASIK surgeries produce equal results, using a variety of eye health measurements.  LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) involves treating nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism by reshaping the eye's cornea to alter the way the eye refracts light.  The older traditional method involves using a blade to create a flap, and then removing a defined amount of corneal tissue by an excimer laser.  Doctors then replace the flap.

The newer technology uses a femtosecond laser to create the flap.  Evidence now shows that this news procedure is just as affective.  Dr. Sanjay Patel said “At six months after surgery, there are no differences between the eyes that had bladeless or microkeratome LASIK with respect to visual acuity (vision as measured by reading an eye chart), contrast sensitivity (ability to discriminate bright objects from dark objects), or in perception of stray light or glare, such as the glare from oncoming headlights."  Sanjay is a Mayo Clinic ophthalmologist and study investigator.  All Laser LASIK Eye Surgery Safer – Both Blade and Laser Equally Effective In Treating Nearsighted Farsighted and Astigmatism

FDA Says Stop Using MoistureLoc Contact Lens Solution – Discard Immediately – Symptoms for Eye Fungus Infection Fusarium Keratitis

FDA Says Stop Using MoistureLoc Contact Lens Solution – Discard Immediately – Symptoms for Eye Fungus Infection Fusarium Keratitis

ReNu

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) supports Bausch and Lomb’s decision to voluntarily withdraw ReNu MoistureLoc contact lens solution from the market.  The agency began an investigation into the Greenville, SC manufacturing plant on March 22nd and will be continuing to inspect their facilities next week.

The FDA is not certain whether Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu MoistureLoc is responsible for the Fusarium keratitis eye fungus outbreak.  The FDA is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in this investigation, according to the FDA.

ABC News reported that the FDA announced today that consumers should immediately stop using and discard ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution, as more cases of fungal infections have been reported among people using the product. FDA Says Stop Using MoistureLoc Contact Lens Solution – Discard Immediately – Symptoms for Eye Fungus Infection Fusarium Keratitis

Bausch and Lomb Product Linked Fusarium Keratitis Eye Infections -  Fungal Symptoms and Treatments - No Recall on ReNu with MoistureLoc

Bosch and Lomb Product Linked Fusarium Keratitis Eye Infections - Fungal Symptoms and Treatments - No Recall Yet on ReNu with MoistureLoc

ReNu

Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc has been pulled from the shelves of Walgreen’s, Rite Aid and Wal-Mart after the news reported that this may be the source of the recent eye fungus outbreak.  The eye infections were first spotted in China, but have now spread to 17 states in the US.

Although Bausch and Lomb has not issued a recall, they have suspended shipments of the popular cleaning solution.  Their stock dropped more yesterday than anytime in last five years, even though the fungus infection is considered rare.  Health care professionals warn that as the weather warms up there may be more fungal infections.

There are an estimated 30 million Americans that wear contact lenses.  There may be scores of people who are infected and have not yet reported the infection.  It is important to seek treatment for the infection because it has been linked to significant loss of vision and has required some patients to undergo corneal transplants. Contact Lens Fungus Infection Warning in US - Symptoms and Treatments - Severe Corneal Fungal Eye Disease Cases in United States

Eye Fungus

A warning has gone out to contact lens wearers concerning an outbreak of Fusarium keratitis, a severe corneal fungal infection that has recently been linked to soft contact lens use.  Doctors began seeing the infection in Asia but now, according to the Doctors of optometry from the American Optometric Association's (AOA) Contact Lens and Cornea Section have begun seeing the infection in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has acknowledging that they are investigating three cases of Optometrists in Florida and Iowa also have reported seeing similar cases in patients.  According to Jack Schaeffer, O.D. and chair-elect of the Contact Lens and Cornea Section of the AOA, "This recent news is cause for concern, but not for alarm. We want our patients to be aware that there is a problem out there and that the details are unfolding as we speak. We remain committed to protecting the eye health of Americans throughout this situation."  Contact Lens Fungus Infection Warning in US - Symptoms and Treatments - Severe Corneal Fungal Eye Disease Cases in United States

Contact Lenses

I just went for a dreaded eye exam. The glasses were still doing the job, but I noticed that my current prescription for contact lenses was not adequate. Wearing them for the entire day was a strain on my vision. After going through the various tests the eye doctor concluded I had astigmatism.

My first reaction was I had some type of serious vision defect and this was going to be expensive. Actually astigmatism is a common vision problem, but few people know what it is. Astigmatism is when the cornea is shaped more like an oblong football than a spherical baseball, which is the normal shape.

In most cases astigmatism is hereditary and your vision may get worse over time. The solution to astigmatism is toric contact lenses. There are a number of name brands that carry toric lenses. The doctor took me into the fitting room and he fitted me with a test pair. Buying Contacts Online Saves Money!

Age Related Macular Degeneration - Genetic link could increase Risk

Age Related Macular Degeneration - Genetics link could increase Risk

Eye

A study conducted at the Columbia University Medical Center found two genes, Factor H and Factor B, may increase the occurrence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 74% of these patients.  There is an estimated 10 million individuals in the United States that have AMD.

The study was first published in Nature Genetics and found that three out of four AMD patients had either one or both of these genes.  This study found that the Factor H gene showed a considerably higher risk for developing AMD.  People that have a variation of the Factor H are not able to control inflammation.  Factor H gene when working properly works by telling a protein to stop an immune response when the infection is gone.  Age Related Macular Degeneration - Genetic link could increase Risk

Diabetes Eye Health improved with a Marijuana compound that Helps Stops Diabetic Retinopathy and Blindness

Eye that is damaged by diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic patients are often threatened with damage to eyes and blindness. Researchers believe that cannabidiol, a compound that comes from Marijuana plants may help to stop the damaging retinopathy by slowing the growth of leaky blood vessels.  The cannabidiol compound does not get a person intoxicated but in the future may be able to help over 16 million Americans that have Diabetic retinopathy from becoming blind.

Dr. Gregory I. Liou who is a molecular biologist at the Medical College of Georgia and fellow researchers has received a $300,000 grant from the American Diabetes Association hope to help treat diabetic retinopathy.  "We are studying the role of cannabinoid receptors in our body and trying to modulate them so we can defend against diabetic retinopathy," Dr. Liou said.
