As a parent you may feel compelled to lock away your children and not let them on the internet, but if you are willing to work with your child you might be able to use a new website called imbee (imbee.com) that allows parents to monitor their child’s blogs and posts and their friends they come in contact with online.

MySpace has become an extremely popular website for “social-networking” online; however there is a lot of information on this site that may be unwelcome to teens and young children.  Another downfall to MySpace and other sites is that anyone can search a user’s profile, however on imbee it allows only registered users to search the site.  MySpace Child Safety Concerns – A new website called Imbee allows Parents to supervise their Kids

Viewsonic Flat Panel LCD Monitor

LCD computer monitors have come down in price over the past few years.  Most places will offer 19” LCD monitors for around $250, but they do go up in price from there.  There are a few features you want to consider including ms response time, resolution, view angle and tilt.  The better models have built in transformers, so you don’t have a box at the end of your power cable.

You can save money with LCD monitors.  Based on a 10 cent kilowatt hour, changing from a CRT (a standard cathode ray tube monitor) to a LCD (liquid crystal display monitor) will save you $21 a year in electricity.  This should be considered if you are waiting for the price to drop further on LCD monitors.  Will the price drop more than $21 this year?  LCD Flat Panel Display Monitors - Model Comparisons of Dot Pitch, TFT, and Contrast Ratings

Opera Web Browser

With all the security woes and annoying user-unfriendly problems associated with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, more and more people are looking for alternatives.  Internet surfers seeking out new web browser options have a few good choices to consider, and luckily, all the browsers in this category boast positive attributes and cool features that can make anyone's browsing experience a good one. In the end, it's up to you to pick one that fits your specific needs, as everyone looks for something different in a browser. But one thing's for sure - you'll never go back to IE.

The Opera browser sings to a tune all its own. One of the more popular alternative browsers available, it is highly acclaimed by new and veteran users alike. This browser is well-known for loading pages very quickly (especially important for those of us still puttering along on a dial-up connection) and making the browsing experience a smooth one, especially compared to the sometimes-grueling loading times that are the trademark of Internet Explore.  Internet Browsers - How to Chose an alternative Web Browser

It’s Here, it’s There, it’s VM Ware! - Virtual Machine Software Advances

VM Software

Over the last few years there have been a lot of improvements in Virtual Machine (VM) software.  Many users of Macs have known about VM software for years, but on the Windows side of the house most users, except for system integrators and developers, don’t have a clue as to what VM is, let alone why it would be at all useful to them.

What is VM?  In a nutshell, VM, or Virtual Machines, are software representations of computer hardware.  An application, such as VM Ware’s VM Workstation, is installed on your computer under Linux or Windows.  Within the VM Ware Application, you can create multiple Virtual Machines, each one running a different instance of whichever operating systems you decide to install.

If you have the hard drive space, memory, and processor speed, you can run many of these at the same time.  The way it works is that inside the VM Workstation, you click on File\New\Virtual Machine, and then fill out the wizard according to what operating system you plan to install in the new virtual machine.  It’s Here, it’s There, it’s VM Ware! - Virtual Machine Software Advances

Google Closer to Online Word Processor - Company Buys Upstartle and Acquires Writely - Is This a Setback for Microsoft?

Writely

Google’s acquisition of Silicon Valley based Upstartle, producers of the online word processor Writely, may signal a new direction for computer users.  If Google offers the service for free, they may obtain a large user base that grows each year.  Insiders expect most of the larger companies to stick with what they have right now, but many small users may prefer an automatically updated word processing experience for free.

It is no secret that Google makes their money from advertising, and they do it well, Google is successful primarily because they are the number one search engine, and if you want to generate traffic, they are the solution.  We expect Google to place ads on their online word processor but allow users to print the document ad-free.  Google Closer to Online Word Processor - Company Buys Upstartle and Acquires Writely - Is This a Setback for Microsoft?

How I became Mrs. PacMan - History of Computer Games Including Pong and Pac-Man

Inwest Computer

In a much simpler time and place, there was no hustle and bustle of the information superhighway. Chips and mice almost certainly came exclusively from a field in Idaho rather than your living room. And somehow, a young girl found love.

When computers first came into our homes in the early 1980’s, many changes were taking place in the world. Businesses were merely tapping the surface in their first experiments with the potential computers possessed. Computers were already on pace to take the home by storm. In a manner of speaking, it was an exciting time to be a part of the expansion of computing technology. However, I was preoccupied with other ventures involving computers. I wasn’t an accountant or a chess player. I didn’t need to compute large quantities of numbers quickly. I was simply looking for Mr. Right.  How I became Mrs. PacMan - History of Computer Games Including Pong and Pac-Man

The Pros and Cons of Web Applications

The Pros and Cons of Web Applications

Google Picasa

There has been a long running debate about web applications replacing desktop software applications. While some functions are better suited to web applications. It is my belief that security concerns and legacy systems will prevent desktop software from becoming obsolete.

Some argue that the debate between web applications and desktop applications is pointless; as their is no clear answer. While still others argue that the issue at hand is as much a business and marketing issue, as it is a technological issue.

Google Serves Most Search Result and Ads - Nielsen Ratings Reports Yahoo and MSN Show Gains As Well

Google Leads Pack

Nielsen//NetRatings Media company compared Yahoo and Google paid search results and found that Google is still leading in the contextual advertising business, although  Yahoo has gained ground since August after launching their publisher network. December is a big month for paid search advertising because the “things” people are searching for pay better. For instance: an ad with the relevant keyword “iPod” will likely pay better than an ad for “politics”.

Ken Cassar, chief analyst for Nielsen//NetRatings said while consumers' use of search engines also grew last year, the growth in paid search ads doesn't necessarily correlate with the growth in volume of searches, reports Wendy Davis of Media Post Productions.  Not all ad searches pay the same either.  Google Serves Most Search Result and Ads - Nielsen Ratings Reports Yahoo and MSN Show Gains As Well

Google Desktop

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) warned computer users to not use the Google Desktop feature called “Search Across Computers”.  According to the foundation, it makes personal data vulnerable to government subpoena, private litigants and hackers.

The EFF headline reads “Google Copies Your Hard Drive – Government Smiles in Anticipation”.  The new Search Across Computers feature stores copies of the user’s files including Word documents, PDF files, spreadsheets and more.

According to an EFF press release, staff attorney Kevin Bankston said “Coming on the heels of serious consumer concern about government snooping into Google's search logs, it's shocking that Google expects its users to now trust it with the contents of their personal computers.”  Privacy Advocates Warn Users about  Google Desktop - Electronic Frontier Foundation

The Kama Sutra Virus – Worm will hit Friday – Spyware Backup and Virus Software will Help

Kama Sutra

The Kama Sutra Virus / worm is going to be activated on Friday.  It has been spreading around the world via email, but won’t begin destroying computer files until Friday, February 3rd

There are some things you can do.  First you should back everything up.  There are many backup programs available that automatically back your files up.  This should be done frequently because even without the destructive force of a virus, hard drives can become corrupted and eventually completely fail.

The virus was spread from user to user via email.  The subject is usually about a photo or video.  Here is a short list of attachments you want to watch for: my photos, schoolgirl fantasies gone bad, the best video clip ever, a great video, give me a kiss,*Hot movie*, Fwd: Photo, Fw: Sexy, Fw: Pictures, Miss. Lebanon or please see the file. Never open attachments, unless you are expecting a certain file.  The Kama Sutra Virus – Worm will hit Friday – Spyware Backup and Virus Software will Help
