Alternatives to Selling on eBay - Free Services From Google May Dominate Small Business Online Sales Market

Alternatives to Selling on eBay - Free Services From Google May Dominate Small Business Online Sales Market

Google Base

Google is beginning to cut into eBay profits by offering free services.  Any business owner will tell you that it takes money to make money, but because of eBay’s high cost per sale, sellers are trying new options including Google’s Froogle Service and Google Base.  By the time you add up the costs associated with listing fees, final valuation fees, gallery fees and other promotional fees, sellers can end up losing money selling on eBay.  If your item does not sell the first time or second time out, you are still out their listing fees.

Mary Crane writes in Forbes Magazine that while the new Google Base service has not become a significant driver of sales for e-commerce companies as of yet, 50% of the conference attendees said they have started to list products on the database.  These eBay users include people that make 75% of their income from eBay and are considered power sellers.  Alternatives to Selling on eBay - Free Services From Google May Dominate Small Business Online Sales Market

Search Engine Optimization - SEO and Website Marketing For Website Publishers - Copyright is Still Important - Timing Creates Page Rank

Search Engines

I think the Internet has changed our concept of what is important in copyright policy.  For instance, Google gives relevance to date posted.  In other words, you could steal a story from someone and post it elsewhere, but Google still gives the first article posted higher rank.  Initially, people tried to change the date on their webpage or the date that the article was posted, but Google quickly began to discount that date, but determined the date from the date Google picked found it.

It could actually benefit a newspaper to have articles posted elsewhere, even without a link.  If the story is about soccer, with the word soccer many times in it, the original page will gain a little more page rank if it is copied – compared to other different articles about soccer that were not copied.  Search Engine Optimization - SEO and Website Marketing For Website Publishers - Copyright is Still Important - Timing Creates Page Rank

Google Earth is a free downloadable software package which is also available in a paid version with Plus and Pro versions.  If you are looking around on the internet at Google Maps, you get a taste of what Google Earth can do, but Google Earth has a lot more bells and whistles to really make it an enjoyable tool.

What is unique about Google Earth is that you can cruise through the maps in a 3D perspective.  You can get a feel for the directions that you are driving along with satellite images.  At this time the buildings are not in 3D yet, but with Google Sketchup you might be able to help contribute to the 3D buildings for Google Earth in the future.  Google Sketchup is a 3D drafting program that also is available in a free version.  Google Earth Software helps you find your way around Town and the World

Working from Home: Creating your first website - How To Start Your Own Home Based Business and Make Your Own Web Pages

Business

Starting a home-based business is a huge undertaking. Creating an online presence for your business can be equally overwhelming. Where do you begin to learn the basics of creating your first website? It’s actually much simpler than you’d think. Listed below are a few tips and tricks to make your first website pain-free.

First, you’ll need a Domain Name. A domain name is what your website visitors will type in to visit your website. For example, the domain name that you would type in to find Christian Work at Home Moms is www.CWAHM.com “CWAHM” being the actual domain name portion of the website address.

You can purchase a domain name for less than $9.00 a year at places across the internet, such as www.GoDaddy.com. On the main page of GoDaddy.com you’ll find a spot where you can search to see if the domain name that you’d like to purchase is available. You want the domain name that you choose to be descriptive and easy to remember. Local Real Estate Marketing

For realtors the Internet can no longer be ignored. Significant numbers of home buyers on going online to do their preliminary research for real estate and agents. Recent surveys suggest over 50%. I personally know a number of local realtors, and it is interesting to see how some are easily adapting to this media, while others are sitting on the sidelines wondering why they are seeing a decrease in prospective buyers.

The Internet is not going away, and if someone plans to make real estate a viable career they must incorporate online marketing in order to not only succeed, but to survive. So how can realtors cost-effective connect with potential customers? In addition to MLS listings, they can reach a very targeted audience through search engine marketing. There are basically two forms of search marketing, organic and pay per click advertising.  Search Marketing for Realtors Reaching the Top!

Local Internet Marketing - A Lesson From Curacao!

Local Internet Marketing - A Lesson From Curacao!

Fred Waters

I just spent a relaxing week in Curacao, an island off the coast of Venezuela. We stayed at some quaint apartments overlooking a bay called the Spanish Waters. This place is really off the beaten path. Our day started with Costa Rican coffee on the patio only a few feet from the water. Big Sigh!

The inn is owned by a charming couple, Raul and Sylvia. He gives scuba diving instructions and she teaches Salsa dance lessons. The name of the place is called the Limestone Holiday in case you're looking for an ideal location to rejuvenate.

I was talking to the owners and they asked what I did for a living. That is not always an easy answer, but to simplify the response I said Internet marketing. That answer always stimulates interest, especially from local business owners. Now I originally found this quaint inn through the Internet. In fact, it kept popping up on a number of different keyword searches. They proceeded to tell me how they use to spend considerable money advertising offline, and the results were not all that impressive. Local Internet Marketing - A Lesson From Curacao!

One of the best ways to promote your site is to generate buzz that gets carried offline.  One way to do that is to ensure others know what you are doing but sometimes this can be difficult especially in today’s fiercely competitive online market.

There are areas of the web which are geared towards helping some of those sites and if your site is a technology or tech related site then this article is for you. The web is all about Buzz.  Those who can generate the most buzz about themselves through press releases, link baiting, blogging, social networking or whatever other tactic they use generally will reap the rewards. Writely

Google’s acquisition of Silicon Valley based Upstartle, producers of the online word processor Writely, may signal a new direction for computer users.  If Google offers the service for free, they may obtain a large user base that grows each year.  Insiders expect most of the larger companies to stick with what they have right now, but many small users may prefer an automatically updated word processing experience for free.

It is no secret that Google makes their money from advertising, and they do it well, Google is successful primarily because they are the number one search engine, and if you want to generate traffic, they are the solution.  We expect Google to place ads on their online word processor but allow users to print the document ad-free.  Google Closer to Online Word Processor - Company Buys Upstartle and Acquires Writely - Is This a Setback for Microsoft?

The fabled tales of successfully tricking search engines into high rankings have given way to a new truth, to achieve decent consistent ranking you cannot engage in tricks but on focused optimization done in a professional ethical manner. According to search sources, with the latest Google update, there is no longer an even playing field when it comes to search placement.

The new Google ranking system gives an advantage to large, established businesses that have achieved brand recognition. Does this mean small businesses should give up on the Web as a marketing model? No, of course not, they simply must develop quality content. Google Error Page

Around the time Google announced “Big Daddy,” there was a new Googlebot roaming the web.  Since then I’ve heard stories from clients of websites and servers going down and previously unindexed content getting indexed.

I started digging into this and you’d be surprised at what I found out.

First, lets look at the timeline of events:

In Late September some astute spider watchers over at Webmasterworld spotted unique Googlebot activity.  In fact, it was in this thread that the bot was first reported on. It concerned some posters who thought that perhaps this could be regular users masquerading as the famous bot.  Could the New Google Spider be causing issues with websites?

I thought for this week I’d give a summary of some of the more interesting Search Engine Strategies sessions which are currently going on in New York City.

I was at SES as a speaker last year in New York and I have to say, there is a wealth of information there even if some of it is contradictory.  Not only that ,but you get to meet some amazing people and can even have one on one access with some of the search engine reps.  Overall, I found it to be a worthwhile experience.

This year, like many people, I wasn’t able to attend. However, I wanted to keep up with the news, so I found a great source of reports and updates.  I will summarize the most important sessions to the best of my ability.

In my opinion, one of the most crucial topics is Vertical Creep.  Vertical Creep in Search Results :: Should Organic Optimizers be Concerned?

Google Leads Pack

Nielsen//NetRatings Media company compared Yahoo and Google paid search results and found that Google is still leading in the contextual advertising business, although  Yahoo has gained ground since August after launching their publisher network. December is a big month for paid search advertising because the “things” people are searching for pay better. For instance: an ad with the relevant keyword “iPod” will likely pay better than an ad for “politics”.

Ken Cassar, chief analyst for Nielsen//NetRatings said while consumers' use of search engines also grew last year, the growth in paid search ads doesn't necessarily correlate with the growth in volume of searches, reports Wendy Davis of Media Post Productions.  Not all ad searches pay the same either.  Google Serves Most Search Result and Ads - Nielsen Ratings Reports Yahoo and MSN Show Gains As Well

The U.S. Justice Departments filed papers with the U.S. District Court in San Jose stating that Google had refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for one million random Web addresses.  The information was to include addresses from Google’s database as well as records of all searches entered on Google during any one-week period.

Privacy rights groups have complained about the governments attempt to have Google turn over such a broad range of materials.  Some fear it could set a dangerous precedent.

Other search engines have already complied with the Justice Department, including Yahoo, America Online (AOL) and Microsoft.  The Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says the subpoena does not violate privacy rights.  Google Does not Turn Over Data But Yahoo Microsoft and AOL Did - to the Justice Department

Promoting your site on a shoestring can be done - but you will have to roll up your sleeves. It takes time, smart thinking and a willingness to really be in communication with your audience. Take notes from The Cluetrain Manifesto:

"If you only have time for one clue this year, this is the one to get...

"These markets are conversations. Their members communicate in language that is natural, open, honest, direct, funny and often shocking. Whether explaining or complaining, joking or serious, the human voice is unmistakably genuine. It can't be faked.

"Most companies, on the other hand, only know how to talk in the soothing, humorless monotone of the mission statement, marketing brochure, and your-call-is-important-to-us busy signal. Same old tone, same old lies. No wonder networked markets have no respect for companies unable or unwilling to speak as they do. Website Marketing Strategy Tips

Further I’ll look at some of the other features to see if there are other uses for this tool, such as competitive intelligence gathering and deep linking opportunities.

Really, this new tool offers so much more when you begin to look at what it can do.  And that’s what I’m writing about today.

So as I was scanning through my ever expanding list of feeds on the industry I came across a post that caught my eye.  It was about this new “link building tool” called PRASE.  PRASE stands for “Page Rank Assisted Search Engine” and while it is limited to some basic queries now, the people that put it together hope to turn it into a full fledged engine as time goes on. Using subdomains to bypass Googles sandbox

Using subdomains to bypass Googles sandbox

Sub-domains

There was apparently some talk at SES Chicago on getting a site indexed in regular results a lot quicker.  This involved the use of an existing established similar domain (either one you own or one you bought) and use it to help you get a site out of the “sandbox.” The full forum post can be found here.

The technique is in the gray-to-black range. I wanted to mention that first, however if your site has been boxed for a while, this may be an alternative for you.  It also requires some coding, and assumes your site is built in PHP although I would also guess there is similar ASP code out there.

First lets look at how this works:  You have an established related domain and a new domain which is ‘boxed.  By establishing a subdomain on the established site and mirroring the content of the new domain there you will get the new subdomain indexed more quickly because it would inherit some of the trust of the main domain. Google Beats Out Microsoft for Lucrative AOL Business

Google Beats Out Microsoft for Lucrative AOL Business

AOL deal

AOL will stick with the worlds most popular search engine.  MSN had hoped to beat Google to the punch for the lucrative 20 million AOL users.  In the end Google will pay $1 billion for a 5% stake in AOL and AOL will continue to use Google’s search.

This is important for Google because they are able to keep the AOL audience and the revenue associated with their search advertising.  According to the Times Online, AOL is their biggest single source of advertising revenue.  In fact, AOL provided 10% of Google’s ad revenue for the first nine months of this year.  This equaled about $420 million.

Microsoft was hoping to grab the AOL prize, now that it has launched a competing search engine.  According to those familiar with the Time Warner Company, the deal with Google was a safer option as compared to dealing with the relatively untested MSN technology.  Google Beats Out Microsoft for Lucrative AOL Business

Google Page Rank and SEO - Try ‘Linking’ With Reality

Google Page Rank and SEO - Try ‘Linking’ With Reality

Google Technology

I have been using the services of a wonderful facility, which has taken almost all of the work out of my ‘Linking Program’ (if you have a website that relies on Search Engine traffic, I really do hope you have one!). The facility is named linkmarket.net. Don’t worry, I am not affiliated in any way and I don’t get any type of reward for referrals, but I do refer people because it is really such a wonderful facility and it’s free, unless you choose to ‘upgrade’ to paid membership, which I am seriously considering doing, in light of the behavior I have observed recently.

I know there have been a fair number of articles on the Internet and on this particular website regarding ‘linking’, it’s importance, how to do it and what not to do. This article is kind of a plea. I’m pleading with people who don’t realize that linking to every single website that’s willing to link back, can be a DISADVANTAGE rather than do them any good at all.

Firstly, the way linkmarket.net works is simple but, as I said, wonderful. You join (free at first, with some minor limitations). You supply your website details, including your category, site name and description and you are listed in their directory. Google Page Rank and SEO - Try ‘Linking’ With Reality

Yahoo Competes with Skype and Google with their own VoIP Service

Yahoo VoIP

Yahoo! is planning on implementing a new VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) service to compete against Skype. Yahoo acquired Internet VoIP service Dialpad back in June.  In September eBay acquired VoIP operator Skype explaining that this could help facilitate sales, specifically international sales.  Buyers could actually converse with each other before bidding on an item.

The service will be available in 180 countries and will integrate Yahoo e-mail and instant messenger service features.  According to Networking Pipeline computer to computer calls will be free.  I used Dialpad when it was free back in 2001 and was able to call any phone number in the US for free using my computer.  Later Dialpad became a pay service.

The service should cost users $0.01 per minute for calls to the US using the Phone Out service.  It is expected to cost even less for calls to more than 30 countries including Argentina, Australia, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Korea. EZ Link Exchange / Sharing

EZ Link Exchange / Sharing

A popular SEO Tool

Initially, when the internet was in its infancy, webmasters used links as a way to complement the content of their website and to help their visitors find information. As the importance of links increased, the focus shifted away from helping the visitor to helping the webmaster.

This came about as a result of the Grandaddy of all search engines Google begun to implement its concept of “Page Rank” to classify websites in terms of their importance and perceived authority. Essentially Google defined links from any given website as a vote or endorsement of the site pointed to - the more significant the originating site, the more significant the endorsement. This in turn affects search engine results position as Google’s ranking algorithm gives significant weighting to this ratio. EZ Link Exchange / Sharing

Deep Linking and Hosted Marketing Pages

Deep Linking and Hosted Marketing Pages

Power Linking

The problem with Search Engine Optimization is that every body does it. Whenever a new technique gets into the public domain, it soon becomes overused. As the SE industry is itself becomes more and more competitive, increasing the pressure to deliver relevant, quality results, the search engines quickly devalue it for their algorithms, in order to maintain the credibility and usability of their search results.

Linking is a case in point. A central factor to “relevancy”, inward/outward links contribute significant weight to page rank and overall search ranking. However, as linking is now both hackneyed and abused, the SE’s are damping or reducing the weighting attached to certain types of links. As they become more sophisticated, the SE’s are able to differentiate between links for their relevance both to the page they are on and the page they point to.

This has in turn led to a renewed emphasis on quality content useful, unique, timely, fresh and links that fit into this new paradigm are given more weighting than those that don’t. Not only are link farms out, but links on so-called resource pages, even when properly categorized and sparingly placed (not more than 100 per page) are being penalized. How to Use Blogs to Market and Promote your Website

Blog Marketing

Many search engines rank websites according to the quality and quantity of incoming links to it.  There are many link sharing programs where you can join and provide links to others and they provide links to your web site.

Google and other search engines have learned how to discount these link programs and some have even refused to index a site that uses a sharing.  This basically makes these programs counter-productive.  Why join a program that will cause your site to never show up on a search engine.  How to Use Blogs to Market and Promote your Website

I've always been of the opinion that competition is a good thing. It encourages all of us to be better and make better products. While it might be true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, copying someone else's work is simply wrong.

We recently came across a competitor using our sales copy. The competitor was using a web graph showing the traffic on one of our sites, along with our sales copy to promote their competing application. Digging a little further, I realized that their competing application was, in both form and function, identical to our application. The competing program contained identical screenshots, custom program icons and our help documentation. While the code of the program was, in fact, different, it was clear that our copyright had been violated.  Internet Copyright Infringements

Link Trading Myths Uncovered

Authors Program

Google has just sent the Search Marketing world into a frenzy of hair pulling and nail biting. Its latest shake up of its algorithm has put paid to unrestrained link swapping. It had gone overboard like Meta tag stuffing before it. Even before this latest revision, all signs indicate that the Search Engines were beginning to devalue reciprocal links and forum signatures in their SERP’s .So what is a harried webmaster to do? Are backlinks still relevant to search rankings? If they still count, how do you acquire them without running afoul of the SE’s?

The answer to that is Link Trading. Link trading also known as Link Renting, is simply paying to have a link pointing to your site from another site, usually, with a high or higher page rank. In essence you are buying the linking site’s traffic and, if your own site is related, its search relevancy.

Link trading came into vogue even before the current SE upheavals because it was often the only way a new or lowly ranked site could get any links from authority sites. Its principle advantage from a search rankings point of view is it is a one-way link the most valuable kind and thus constitutes a high quality link.  Link Trading Myths Uncovered

Search Engine Platform

There has been a lot of talk lately about search engines like Google launching their own branded operating system.

While such a system doesn’t necessarily correspond with Google’s vision of making the world’s information universally accessible, it could be a consideration in that plan.

In today’s article I revisit a common theme.  One which I have written about in other places.  That is:  search as a platform unto itself.

While I would hope that one day I could run a Google branded OS that connects instantly to the web to do everything I typically do in a day, I don’t see such a scenario any time soon.  That is because there is still much innovation required for this to happen. Search Engines as a Platform

SE Watch

Working in the SEO/SEM industry can be very rewarding.  Many times a problem can be solved simply with a little online research, and posts on a few forums.  All to often, however, some people put too much stock in the posts they see, ultimately negatively impacting their SEO efforts.

In this article I look at some of the positives and negatives of online SEM forums and attending SEM and SEO conferences.  As part of my daily routine I visit a few of the search engine forums out there to see what people are talking about and what some have noticed.

Sometimes I come across real gems stuff I can put away for later, or use with a client I’m currently stuck on. But more often than not, the information you see is really mis-information in some cases.  As such, one must be extremely careful in relying what is said on one forum. Before the Internet your news sources were extremely limited.  Nowadays there are a multitude of news sites including news aggregators.  Both Yahoo and Google offer news aggregation sites.  Google recently offered RSS feeds for all of their news sources including The New York Times, The Washington Post and Best Syndication.  All a user needs is a free RSS feeder installed on their system.

Some news organizations such as Forbes offer separate news feeds for different subjects.  BestSyndication.com has followed suit offering RSS feeds for business, health, science / technology, commentary and entertainment news.  Really Simple Syndication and Article Submissions have become a Powerful Tool

Similarly on the Web, if you want to gain web presence, you need to utilize what the Web Success Team calls “The Art of Misdirection.”

Beware   Is Your Website Generating System Really Turnkey?

Beware Is Your Website Generating System Really Turnkey?

Screen Shot

Many newbie internet marketers fall for the deceptively simple 'turnkey' website or internet marketing system. Unaware, they buy a turnkey system, perhaps even with a year of hosting, and expect the money to come pouring in within 30 minutes. The hours pass, and the days pass. They realize there was something not included in this 'turnkey' system: customers or a way to get them.

Ewen Chia recognized this problem and developed a brilliant system for the newbie marketer: a turnkey website with what might be called a traffic generation laboratory. The system itself is monetized from front-end to back-end, and the ad copy is superb, ensuring high conversion. You can see the introductory ad copy for yourself.

According to the ISP Interland's Summer 2005 Small and Medium-sized Business Barometer, SMB's are getting a return from their Internet marketing strategy - company websites are providing valuable leads and sales.

57 percent of business leaders surveyed said they generate monthly revenue through online purchases or offline purchases that were influenced by their website.

78 percent report their business is healthier - has a competitive advantage or stronger economic footing - because they have a website, and 76 percent say their website generates leads for their business.

What’s in a name? That’s a good question. Some feel that the name that you are given at birth provides and accurate description of who you will turn out to be.

So I began to wonder, does a domain name say as much about a future site as your name says about you? I decided to take a look at some of the domain names registered by Google to see if I could get an idea of what the company may be up to in the future and came up with some interesting ideas which I will share with you here.

Etymology is the study of the history of words. And through etymology you can find out just what your name means. I looked my name up and it means “bright fame.” I guess that’s not too far from the truth :)

In any case, I took some time one day to see if I could track down some of the other domain names Google owns.

The Good and the Bad of SEO – From Googles Mouth!

The Good and the Bad of SEO – From Googles Mouth!

Google SEO

I recently had the opportunity to ask questions of some Google staffers. There were some questions I felt I needed to get verification on, so when I had the opportunity via a conference call I took it.

In this article I highlight some of the points made during the call so you know what Google thinks.

You know its bad when you take time from your holidays to come into work to attend a conference call. But that’s what I did a few weeks ago. You see I had to because I was going to have the opportunity to ask some Google employees specific questions on things that I’d been pretty sure about, but wanted to hear it right from the horses mouth.

Google and Sun - a partnership to kill Microsoft or a deal with the devil?

Google and Sun - a partnership to kill Microsoft or a deal with the devil?

Sun and Google Team Up

As you have probably already heard, Google and Sun have partnered up to distribute the Google Toolbar with Sun’s Java.  While this may seem like a minor deal in the grand scheme of things, upon further reflection I find this could be the deal which will ultimately break Microsoft.

While the implications could be huge and far reaching, only Google knows for sure what it wants.  We can speculate however and that’s what this article is all about.  Is such a deal good for Sun (and Google) or is it a pact with the devil?

At first glance, such a deal doesn’t seem like much.  After all java to most people is just a plug in for your Internet browser.  What good would such a deal be to Google?  Well lets take a look at what Java can do.  The following is taken straight from Sun’s website: Google and Sun - a partnership to kill Microsoft or a deal with the devil?

Search Engines

A Search Engine Optimization firm can be an invaluable asset in your Internet marketing campaign. They specialize in knowing how to highten your search engine positions, monitoring those positions on the regular basis, and adjusting their strategies to account for unwanted results in any given month. Since this takes a lot of effort, time, and specialized knowledge, it can be in your best interest to go to an outside source rather than try to maintain high search engine positions on your own.

However, like every business, there are good companies and there are lemons. Knowing the right questions to ask and the criteria to look for will help you in choosing an affordable, effective search engine optimization company.  Successful Search Engine Optimization

Yahoo Podcast Search Site

Yahoo is expected to join others in the podcast Search business.  Podcasts are streaming audio files on the Web and can be loaded into iPods, digital music players, or just played over your computer.  America Online and Blinkx already offer podcast searches.

Many radio shows are stored on the web as a podcast.  Listeners can download the broadcast and load the programming into their music player for listening at a later time.  One of the more popular podcasts is Leo Laporte, the “tech guy”.

The Yahoo podcast search will allow users to search podcasts via keywords, categories or tagging.  Yahoo Expected to Unveil Podcast Search Site with RSS Capabilities

Google Expected to Dominate Tech World

Google Expected to Dominate Tech World

The old search method

Google is already the dominant search engine handling half of the searches worldwide. According to a new book by author Stephen Arnold, Google may become the most dominant tech company in the world.

Google has already challenged both Microsoft and Yahoo for the email business providing a lower cost alternative with its gmail.  They also offer a free service called Froogle that searches for products sold online.  For instance, if you are looking for a motorcycle, Froogle will list the prominent vendors and their prices.

Not only does Google provide the most relevant word searches, Google has also cataloged the image world, providing image searches.  Google is becoming the leader in news searches, providing relevant data on news stories.  If you have ever tried a simple web search for a news item you know how difficult it is to find that story.  Google Expected to Dominate Tech World

Google’s Blog Search threatens Feedster Technorati and IceRocket

Blogs

Google Inc. has introduced a completely new search engine devoted to blogs.  The Google search already indexes blogs, but the links to them are sometimes buried among other webpages.  The pages become outdated as the content changes so many surfers are taken to pages that have changed since the regular Google Search indexed it.

Google’s Blog Search will be devoted to blogs exclusively and will be serving up more relevant data.  According to Google, blog sites that syndicate posts via RSS or Atom feeds will automatically crawled by Google on a regular basis.  According to Chris Sherman at Search Engine Watch “Google defines blogs as sites that use RSS and other structured feeds and update content on a regular basis.”  Google’s Blog Search threatens Feedster Technorati and IceRocket

Search Engine Optimization and Algorithms

Search Engine Optimization and Algorithms

Search Engine Algorithms

Search Engines have been critical in the development of the Internet.  What relevance would the Internet have if you were unable to find what you were looking for?  These Search sites house a multitude of servers that categorize and link every known website.  A user types in some keywords and the Search engine searches for relevant sites.

Early search engines relied on Meta Tags and keyword frequency of a webpage to determine relevance.  Many web designers were able to fool search engines by repeating the same word many times in an article and unseen metatags.

Google and other search engines began using a new more effective algorithm.  Instead of determining relevance by word frequency or meta-tags, they determined relevance by links.  The more quality links a site had, the more relevant it became.  The equation includes site traffic and other criteria.  Most search engines are very secretive about their particular algorithm. Search Engine Optimization and Algorithms
