Dunga gives Brazil’s national soccer team a punch in the heart

Dunga gives Brazil’s national soccer team a punch in the heart

Dunga

Heading into the 2006 World Cup with a team loaded to the gills with talent — Ronaldinho Gaucho, Kaka, Adriano, Ronaldo, Lucio, etc — coach Carlos Alberto Parreira went with the idea that the star power would come together and Brazil would once again hoist the World Cup trophy.

Parreira couldn’t have been more wrong as Brazil — which warmed up for the World’s largest tournament with weak friendlies, including one against an under-20 team — never seemed in sync and crashed out lamely against a determined French side.  Complete Article

Tour De France - Floyd Landis breaks the camel's back - all athletes are now doped

Landis

As the doping scandal -- and it is a doping scandal -- of Floyd Landis enters the ludicrous stage, with Landis's lawyer now just randomly running excuses up the flagpole, it's time that we as sports fans admit defeat and accept the inevitable.

They're all doped up now. All of them. When the winner of the Tour de France takes drugs to win, he incriminates everyone. Because Floyd Landis doesn't have a "naturally high testosterone level," and dehydration didn't cause his testosterone level to scream "Cheater!".  Complete Article

Baseball, Barry Bonds and Steroids

Baseball, Barry Bonds and Steroids

Bonds

In the last 5 years the growing popularity and use of illegal substances (steroids) in major league baseball has created a public outcry and led to indictments, arrests and congressional hearings. Some have even put major league baseball on par with professional wrestling as it is now a drugged or ‘juiced’ game and old, lasting records by the greats like Ruth and Hank Aaron can easily be broken by lesser athletes on steroids and have become meaningless. Just look at Barry Bonds for an example.  Complete Article

Golf Swing Basics Tutorial – One Golf Grip at a Time

Golf Swing Basics Tutorial – One Golf Grip at a Time

Golf

I would like to focus the jest of this article on the basis of the golf swing… the grip. With spring in the air and golf on our minds let’s get this year off to a good start by not overlooking the basics.

Unquestionably the biggest mistake I see in people’s golf swing isn’t in their golf swing itself. Nope. Not at all.

More often than not the mistakes happen before the swing even begins. The first mistake is made in how the golfer holds the golf club. After that the next mistake usually comes in with how they stand up to the ball. Poor posture. Then after having two strikes against them, they then finish the job of making it almost impossible to hit a good golf shot by improperly lining up to their intended target.  Complete Article

WWE Stars Show Up For OVW Matches - Riggs Brothers Seth Skyfire CM Punk and Deuce and Domino - Danny Davis Slammed Hard

John Riggs

The Riggs Brothers defeated Chad Dick and Eddie Craven in one of last night’s OVW (Ohio Valley Wrestling) matches at the Davis Arena in Louisville.  This was the first match back in the OVW for the Riggs Brothers after being released from the WWE.  The crowd liked them, even though Chad is still doing his striptease show.

The taped show will include Charles Evans beating Pat Buck with a bodyslam.  In a more competitive fight, Elijah Burke beat Shawn Osbourne.  Afterwards Burke celebrated his patriotism.  Cody Runnels beat KC James by DQ.  Marcus Murtado, of PW Insider, reported that Aaron Stevens interfered on behalf of James, which prompted Roadkill to clean house and make a challenge for a tag match at Six Flags.  But just the same, KC was great doing his old school Tommy Rich gimmick.  Complete Article

Biography of Robinho, Robson de Souza

Biography of Robinho, Robson de Souza

Robinho

A so-called “new Pele” appears in Brazil every year. Football journalists often give this name to good, but not super-talented, footballers. Recently we have an opportunity to watch a birth of a new football “miracle”.

And Pele himself has opened this “miracle”. In 1999 a great guru came back to his dear Santos to be a couch for growing youth. During the first day of his work he noticed a 15-years-old guy named ROBINHO.

After training Pele came to a boy and told he reminded him of himself in his young years. And really, they physically resembled each other a lot both swarthy, thin and with cheeky smiles, that throw into confusion.  Complete Article

Viagra Helps Cyclists at High Altitudes - Bicycle Exercise Performance Benefit by As Much As 45% In Study Using Sildenafil

Cyclist

Researchers at Stanford University Medical Center believe that Viagra improves cardiovascular and exercise performance measures of trained cyclists at high altitude.  Some of the participants had an improved performance of up to 45%, while others found no benefit and there was no benefit for anyone at sea level.

Ten cyclists who took sildenafil (Viagra) collectively improved their stroke volume (the volume of blood moved out of one ventricle of the heart per beat) and cardiac output (stroke volume times heart rate) compared to the placebo trial.  The researcher also found that the Viagra group minimized the decline of arterial oxygen saturation of the arteries when the cyclists were at simulated altitude of 12,700 feet. Burn Body Fat by Exercising in the Morning before Breakfast

Burn Body Fat by Exercising in the Morning before Breakfast

Increase Metabolism

By exercising for at least 30 minutes in the morning when you first wake up and before you eat breakfast, you set your body up to burn more body fat.  The reason you burn fat better is because your body has been without food for several hours and you do not have carbohydrates available when you first wake up.  When you exercise your body need carbohydrates for energy but will instead substitute your body fat for energy instead which improves your fat burning ability. Cherries

According to a study published in the today’s online edition of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, drinking cherry juice may help prevent the pain in the repair of muscle caused by weight lifting.

Declan Connolly, associate professor of education and director of the human performance laboratory at the University of Vermont along with colleagues from New York’s Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma and Cornell University all worked together to test a specially made highly-concentrated tart cherry juice blend which they tested in a randomized, placebo-controlled study.  The study had 14 male college students participate in this study.  Body Building and Weight Lifting– Cherry Juice could relieve Muscle Damage Pain

Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, was fined $250,000 for "several acts of misconduct" after game five of the NBA finals between the Mavs and Miami Heat.  Cuban went on to the floor after the game and vented directly at official Joe DeRosa and then turning to the scorer’s box where David Stern was seated.

According to an AP report he said to Stern and other NBA officials, who were seated at the scorer's table and was overheard to shout venomously in the jubilant din, '[Bleep] you! [Bleep] you! Your league is rigged!'  Later Cuban said that none of the ranting was directed at Stern. The World Cup 2006 - Watch out for the New Soccer Ball

World Cup Official ball

The World Cup 2006 is about to begin today, but watch out for the new soccer ball being used for the first time for the World Cup.  The new ball has only 14 panels with fewer seams compared to the traditional soccer ball that has either 26 or 32 panels in a hexagon pattern.

Scientists say that this change is going to “bamboozle goalkeepers” during the game this year.  The reason they believe that the new soccer ball will cause problems is that its design resembles the aerodynamics of a baseball.  The new soccer ball when hit with a slow spin will make it more likely to give an unpredictable trajectory when kicked in the air. The World Cup 2006 - Watch out for the New Soccer Ball

Red Sox Greats

Red Sox Greats

Carl Yastrzemski

It’s no wonder the Boston Red Sox wear red and white. While red symbolizes passion and excitement and white symbolizes the "good guy" who wins in the end as well as angels, it’s the Red Sox greats such as Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski that make us believe there really are "angels in the outfield." The true pride American League baseball is represented by some of the best players in the nation.

The history of baseball changed with the added excellence of Carlton Fisk, Wade Boggs, Cy Young, Luis Aparicio, Dennis Eckersley, Roger Clemens, Fred Lynn, Nomar Garciaparra, and Pedro Martinez. Even a die-hard Yankees fan like me must admit the extraordinary accomplishments of some of the finest players to have ever dug their cleats into Fenway Park’s turf. Let’s take a closer look into the historical realm of the greatest players to wear the official jersey of blood, sweat, and tears. It is necessary to pay homage to one of the best teams in American baseball.  Red Sox Greats

Murderers’ Row - The 1927 New York Yankees

Murderers’ Row - The 1927 New York Yankees

Gehrig and Ruth

Widely known for "5-o'clock lightning", the 1927 New York Yankees boasted awesome offensive power. Intimidating all of baseball with the bats of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, this team was unstoppable. Many of their opponents built up hope slowly in the early stages of a contest, only to be "struck" with an unceasing barrage some time around 5-o’clock.

Baseball games routinely started at 3:30 pm back in the 1920s and generally ended somewhere around 6:00 pm. The '27 Yanks usually delivered a crippling offensive blow to their opponents in the late innings, thus the phrase "5-o'clock lightning." Of course, they had no lights for playing at night, all games were day games. Major League Baseball was settling into its widely held superstitions and routine, repetitiveness and all of the mythical and obsession-based ceremonial acts that still exist to this day. The Chicago Cubs’ Legend Ernie Banks

The Chicago Cubs’ Legend Ernie Banks

Ernie Banks

It is often difficult to compare the legendary players of Major League Baseball in that by making comparisons based on statistics, the focus generally falls on the sheer performance on the field. It also tends to reflect on what effect those numbers have had in the teams’ success and how an individual players’ success has bolstered a team to championship levels.

Other players, no matter how individually successful, are too often viewed in an also-ran status because of the perception that their effort never was enough to allow the team to stand on a championship podium. Baseball is a team sport, yet a team sport loosely based on individual effort. Looking past the numbers to the intangibles of attitude and enthusiasm for the game, the greatness of a player cannot be judged merely on statistics. Ernie Banks is one such player in MLB history.  The Chicago Cubs’ Legend Ernie Banks

The Babe Ruth Story—The Fierce Rivalry of the Red Sox and the Yankees

The Babe Ruth Story—The Fierce Rivalry of the Red Sox and the Yankees

Babe Ruth

Near the end of the 1919 season, Harry Frazee, then owner of the Boston Red Sox, decided to sell a group of his star players to the New York Yankees. Among them was George Herman Ruth, also known affectionately as "Babe". Ruth's career reflects the change in strategy and the shift in dominance from pitching to hitting at this time.

Babe Ruth had a reputation for being one of the fiercest “leftys” to ever take the mound. It was soon discovered that he wasn’t too bad with a bat either, and Ruth became the most celebrated and successful player in Boston. He was practically an institution. When many Bostonians awoke on January 6, 1920, and opened their morning newspapers, they mourned the fact that an icon had been sold to New York. The Babe was gone.   The Babe Ruth Story—The Fierce Rivalry of the Red Sox and the Yankees

Basketball Positions

In baseball, hockey, football, and basketball, there are key positions that tend to be the dealmaker or breaker when the game is on the line. This doesn’t negate the fact that the four sports are true team efforts, with each position and player being important. Still, there are certain positions that more times than not are central in controlling the game when everything is at stake.

If you’re into wagering, understanding the importance of these positions in each game will give you an edge when analyzing teams or performing head to head evaluations. In this article, we’re going to focus on two positions from each sport, considering why they’re so important when it comes to big game performance.  Difference Makers in the Playoffs - Key Positions Basketball Football Baseball and Hockey

Baseball - A Wheel Within a Wheel: The Negro Leagues

Baseball - A Wheel Within a Wheel: The Negro Leagues

Monte Irvin

Although many aspects of the early days of baseball have been well documented, historians are just beginning to chronicle the major role that Black athletes played in making professional baseball popular. Black ball players have played the game for about as many years as White players.

Players of color, both Black and Hispanic, were on mostly White ball clubs in the first days of amateur ball, but when the majors started to become popular in the early 1900's, an unwritten barbaric rule went into effect that kept players of color out of professional baseball.  Baseball - A Wheel Within a Wheel: The Negro Leagues

Early History of Baseball in America

Early History of Baseball in America

Ty Cobb

It is difficult to pinpoint when baseball was first played in America. The early development of baseball is chronicled more in myth and legend rather than in facts and history. The first and earliest written evidence of baseball in America is a bylaw written in 1791 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

The document, discovered by Society for Baseball Research member John Thorn in 2004, offers strong evidence that baseball is a unique American game, and it casts doubt on the long held belief that baseball was derived from rounders, a British game. It also raises the question of the origins of cricket, as it has been widely thought that baseball followed cricket, which was developed from a folk game known as stool ball (1085 A.D). The Origin of Baseball

The Origin of Baseball

Sports

There is very little known about the origins of baseball. There appears to be a historic mish-mash of very early games that may very well have ties to modern baseball.  The idea that baseball evolved from any of these sources turns out to be conjecture or theory. Like most history, if it goes back far enough, details start to get quite fuzzy. By its very nature, baseball has been a game that has thrived on legends and myth.

There is evidence that baseball is strictly American, as many of its features are unique.  Conversely, many cling to the long held belief that baseball was derived from rounders, a British game. This claim is somewhat hard to dispute. Almost everything except the shape of the field is similar to baseball. The Origin of Baseball

NASCAR – Corporate Sponsors spend Millions for Logo on Race Cars

NASCAR – Corporate Sponsors spend Millions for Logo on Race Cars

NASCAR

NASCAR is big business, with a huge fan base.  Corporate sponsors spend on average between $15-20 million annually to paint their logo on the race cars.  The problem with this is that the cars zip around the speedway at 200 mph and may be difficult for their logos to be seen, especially on television.

Paul Ostasiewski, a marketing professor at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV said, “A 200 mph billboard seems like a contradiction, yet that’s an important part of what NASCAR sells. A car’s paint scheme has to be designed so a major sponsor’s name can be easily read, particularly on television where it’s usually seen for a few seconds before cameras cut away to show another car. Television is where the greatest exposure is. It’s also where the biggest problems are.”  NASCAR – Corporate Sponsors spend Millions for Logo on Race Cars

When you think about baseball, you think about a game that has been surrounded by myth, mystification and legends that have a tendency to get embellished over the years and re-embellished. There were many reported bizarre and unusual incidents and events in baseball featuring various baseball characters that seemed to be acting in an epic saga that combined comedy, mystery, and fantasy. Some of these incidents may be embellished, or they may not be apocryphal. Some though, are so unusual and bizarre, that I believe no one could make them up. Some of the events are well documented and there's no question that they actually happened.  The Unusual to Bizarre in Early Professional Baseball

Treadmills Online

We all want to save money and buy at a discount. When it comes to treadmills getting the best value is particularly important when you consider the price.

A treadmill can cost a small fortune. And if you are not sure it won't end up as an expensive clothes hanger, you want to be cautious on how much you spend.

Whether you buy online or in a retail store, you'll find just about any treadmill is marked down significantly from its list price. List prices have no basis in reality of the true value of the treadmill.

It is no different than other products like cars, jewelry, furniture, etc. The problem becomes, what is the real value, and how does that compare to the discount price. Having worked in the treadmill business for a number of years I know how companies manipulate the prices to give the illusion of value. Discount Treadmills Are They Really a Deal?

The Kentucky Derby - A Historical Look at Horse Racing’s Finest

Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby, the premier horse race of all horse races, has a checkered history that spans 130 years.  At first, it struggled to survive, owing its success to the men and women who created and sustained it.

The dream started with a young man, Col. M. Lewis Clark, grandson of Gen. William Clark, the explorer.  He visited England and France in 1872 and decided that he would start a racetrack in Kentucky to revive the state’s horse breeding industry.  Development began soon after the trip on 80 acres he obtained from his two uncles, John and Henry Churchill.  Funding was through membership subscriptions that sold at $100 a piece. The track was officially opened on May 17, 1875.  Four races were held that day and the winner of the featured race, the Kentucky Derby, was a horse named Aristides. Two African Americans, Oliver Lewis and Ansel Williamson, trained and jockeyed Aristides. Throughout the years, the Kentucky Derby became the focal event for Churchill Downs.  The Kentucky Derby - A Historical Look at Horse Racing’s Finest

Tennis Rackets

There are so many different tennis rackets to choose from these days, so how do you know what is best for you.  There are tennis rackets designed for power and some for finesse.  Each company has incorporated different technology into their rackets, Head uses flexpoint and liquidmetal technology in several of their rackets.  Wilson uses the nCode technology in their rackets and every other company has their own theories of what is best in a racket.

These are all great but what about the string.  String is just as important in the performance of a racket as the racket itself.  The type and gauge of the string as well as the tension of the string will all effect how the racket will perform.  There are also different stringing patterns which will effect how the racket reacts to the ball.  You can turn a high quality racket into a useless piece of equipment if your string isn’t set properly for you.  The perfect racket just isn’t enough.  The Power of String - Tennis Rackets and Performance - Buying Online

Manning and Manning-Can Either Brother Win the Big One?

Peyton Manning

It was just over a year ago, after the Colts lost to the Pats in their post-season contest, that Boomer Esiason said on national television, "I think maybe Peyton (Manning) is this generation's Dan Marino."  Esiason went on to state that Manning "is a great football player, but he's not going to get to the Super Bowl, I'm telling you, not with that defense."

Marino, who was on the set, took umbrage at the reference and shot back, "Oh, wait a minute. I got to a Super Bowl."  Marino made a good point, but still, Esiason seemed to be on target by not blaming either quarterback for their failings but, rather, the guys on the other side of the ball-their weak defenses.

Fast forward to January 15, 2006, almost exactly a year to the date that Esiason made his comments. What was different this time for Peyton Manning and the Colts?  Manning and Manning-Can Either Brother Win the Big One?

Chicago Cubs Pitcher Mark Prior Re-signs

Mark Prior

After many trips through the rumor mill, Mark Prior accepted the Chicago Cubs’ offer on January 27 to a one-year, $3.65 million contract. That is $900,000 more than the salary he would have earned under the contract he voided in November. Since Prior's definitive season in 2003 (18-6), he has cooled off somewhat, and has only managed to go 17-11 over the past two seasons.

The Cubs were within five outs of reaching the World Series in 2003, due, in part, to Prior's performance. A sore elbow put him on the disabled list early last season, and when he entered the normal rotation again, he was hit on the same elbow by a scorching line drive. He finished the 2005 season going 11-7 with a 3.67 ERA over 27 games.

The Chicago Cubs’ pitcher, whose name has been mentioned as possible trade bait this off-season, said that he was not too upset at the rumors because he figured they were just that -- rumors. Chicago Cubs Pitcher Mark Prior Re-signs

The Designated Hitter DH: Making Life Tough for AL Pitchers

The Designated Hitter DH: Making Life Tough for AL Pitchers

Edgar Martinez

In 1973 Major League Baseball instituted three rules designed to lessen the power of pitchers and create more offense. One theory at work was that the game needed to be energized and that more hitting would create additional runs and excitement.

Both the National and American Leagues lowered the pitcher’s mound and made the strike zone smaller.  The American League, as is well known, also created a new offensive position - the designated hitter (DH). The DH specialized in one thing and one thing only - hitting.

Usually third in the batting order, the DH was more often than not a power hitter who also swatted the ball for average.  Sometimes he was an older, less mobile player trying to extend his career or he could be a younger guy ill-equipped to be a position player.  The Designated Hitter DH: Making Life Tough for AL Pitchers
